TL;DR: The Electron, Proton, and Alpha Monitor (EPAM) as mentioned in this paper was designed to make measurements of ions and electrons over a broad range of energy and intensity using five separate solid-state detector telescopes oriented so as to provide nearly full coverage of the unit-sphere.
Abstract: The Electron, Proton, and Alpha Monitor (EPAM) is designed to make measurements of ions and electrons over a broad range of energy and intensity. Through five separate solid-state detector telescopes oriented so as to provide nearly full coverage of the unit-sphere, EPAM can uniquely distinguish ions (E i ≳50 keV) and electrons (E e ≳ keV) providing the context for the measurements of the high sensitivity instruments on ACE. Using a △E × E telescope, the instrument can determine ion elemental abundances (E≳0.5 MeV nucl-1). The large angular coverage and high time resolution will serve to alert the other instruments on ACE of interesting anisotropic events. The experiment is controlled by a microprocessor-based data system, and the entire instrument has been reconfigured from the HI-SCALE instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft. Inflight calibration is achieved using a variety of radioactive sources mounted on the reclosable telescope covers. Besides the coarse (8 channel) ion and (4 channel) electron energy spectra, the instrument is also capable of providing energy spectra with 32 logarithmically spaced channels using a pulse-height-analyzer. The instrument, along with its mounting bracket and radiators weighs 11.8 kg and uses about 4.0 W of power. To demonstrate some of the capabilities of the instrument, some initial performance data are included from a solar energetic particle event in November 1997.

TL;DR: The results indicate that CuIr2S4 undergoes a simultaneous charge-ordering and spin-dimerization transition—a rare phenomenon in three-dimensional compounds.
Abstract: Inorganic compounds with the AB2X4 spinel structure have been studied for many years, because of their unusual physical properties The spinel crystallographic structure, first solved by Bragg in 1915, has cations occupying both tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites Interesting physics arises when the B-site cations become mixed in valence Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a classic and still unresolved example, where the tendency to form ordered arrays of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions competes with the topological frustration of the B-site network The CuIr2S4 thiospinel is another example, well known for the presence of a metal-insulator transition at 230 K with an abrupt decrease of the electrical conductivity on cooling accompanied by the loss of localized magnetic moments Here, we report the determination of the crystallographic structure of CuIr2S4 below the metal-insulator transition Our results indicate that CuIr2S4 undergoes a simultaneous charge-ordering and spin-dimerization transition-a rare phenomenon in three-dimensional compounds Remarkably, the charge-ordering pattern consists of isomorphic octamers of Ir83+S24 and Ir84+S24 (as isovalent bi-capped hexagonal rings) This extraordinary arrangement leads to an elegant description of the spinel structure, but represents an increase in complexity with respect to all the known charge-ordered structures, which are typically based on stripes, slabs or chequerboard patterns

TL;DR: In this article, a set of polarity assignments are laid out to provide a context for discussion of these results and a "standard framework" is proposed to correlate the disparate results, and the framework is used to draw general conclusions about the polarity of bulk crystals.
Abstract: GaN, AlN and InGaN have a polar wurtzite structure and epitaxial films of these materials typically grow along the polar axis. Although the polarity of these nitrides has been studied by quite a number of techniques, many results in the literature are in conflict. In this paper an attempt is made to lay out a set of polarity assignments to provide a context for discussion of these results. A “standard framework” is proposed to correlate the disparate results, and the framework is used to draw general conclusions about the polarity of bulk crystals, VPE and MBE epitaxial films, and devices.

TL;DR: This paper presents the latest progress on cloud RAN (C-RAN) in the areas of centralization and virtualization and demonstrates the viability of various front-haul solutions, including common public radio interface compression, single fiber bidirection and wavelength-division multiplexing.
Abstract: This paper presents the latest progress on cloud RAN (C-RAN) in the areas of centralization and virtualization. A C-RAN system centralizes the baseband processing resources into a pool and virtualizes soft base-band units on demand. The major challenges for C-RAN including front-haul and virtualization are analyzed with potential solutions proposed. Extensive field trials verify the viability of various front-haul solutions, including common public radio interface compression, single fiber bidirection and wavelength-division multiplexing. In addition, C-RANs facilitation of coordinated multipoint (CoMP) implementation is demonstrated with 50%-100% uplink CoMP gain observed in field trials. Finally, a test bed is established based on general purpose platform with assisted accelerators. It is demonstrated that this test bed can support multi-RAT, i.e., Time-Division Duplexing Long Term Evolution, Frequency-Division Duplexing Long Term Evolution, and Global System for Mobile Communications efficiently and presents similar performance to traditional systems.
