Abstract: A video on demand network (VODN), transmits video signals (VS) to user stations (US11, . . . , US2N) pursuant to the receipt of control signals (CS) issued by these user stations. In order to optimize the retrieval costs, this video on demand network maintains a large video library in a central video server (CS) and stores locally popular video signals in a plurality of local distributed video servers (DS1/2) from which the latter video signals are transmitted to the user stations. The video signals provided by the local distributed servers are updated from the central server based upon the changing popularity of the video signals. The present invention proposes in particular to store the video signals in the local distributed servers in random access read/write memories (HDA), e.g., electronic RAMs, magnetic or optical disks, and/or the like, from which the video signals can flexibly be supplied on-line to the user stations and to store the video signals in the central server in sequential access memories, e.g. Digital Audio Tapes (DAT) and CD-ROMs (CDR), providing cheap mass storage.

Abstract: A computer user interface generation system and method is disclosed, wherein computer user interfaces can be generated dynamically during activation of the computer application for which the generated user interface provides user access to the functional features of the application. The generated user interface may be a graphical user interface (GUI) that uses instances of various user interaction techniques. A user interface specification is provided in a configuration database for generating the user interface, and by changing the user interface specification in the configuration database, the user interface for the computer application can be changed during activation of the application.

Abstract: : An interdigitated array (IDA) electrode composed of 40 pairs of 0.3 micrometers thick Pt fingers 3.5 micrometers wide and separated by 2.5 micrometer gaps of insulating borosilicate glass substrate has been fashioned by a modified microlithographic technique. The two IDA is applied to measurement of redox electron conduction through films of poly-Os(bpy)2 (vpy)2 (C1O4)2, poly-CRu(bpy)2 (vpy)2 (C104)2, and Prussian Blue that had been electrochemically deposited over the Pt fingers and in te insulating gaps. Appropriate theory for using the IDA for this purpose is developed. Electrochemically generated luminescence from solutions of Ru(bpy)3 (2+) is also observed with the IDA. (Author)

Abstract: A quantitative model is presented to describe the formation of volume holograms in a polymeric medium containing photopolymerizable acrylate monomers that undergo spatially modulated gelation as a result of exposure to a visible “write” beam. The model refines the simple diffusion model of Zhao and Mouroulis [J. Mod. Opt. 41, 1929 (1994)], by including cure dependence of both the photoreaction kinetics and the monomer diffusivity. These dependences are determined by experimental measurements, using near infrared spectroscopy to quantify the degree of cure and the time dependence of the hologram formation to infer the cure-dependent diffusivity. The cure-dependent diffusion coefficient can be fit by an expression from a free-volume theory, and the cure-dependent reaction rate coefficient is found to be proportional to the diffusivity, showing the reaction rate to be diffusion limited. With the model parameters determined experimentally, predictions are then made of the first, second, and third harmonics of the grating profile, and these are found to be in good agreement with the measured values. The results show the validity of the model and its usefulness in predicting the optimal exposure conditions and performance of a given holographic material.

As position information of a wireless mobile unit is received, it is compared to stored position information of a remote location, such as a home. As the traveler approaches his home, and gets within a certain distance of home, a signal is then sent to a controller within his home to perform an action or instruct the performance of an action.
