TL;DR: In this article, a fabrication process that combines organic semiconductor circuitry with Si is described, and the design and advantages of adaptive differential amplifiers with high gain and feedback are described.
Abstract: Organic transistor based circuits that can be employed for chemical vapor sensing, are described. Such circuits have improved sensing characteristics in comparison with discrete transistor based sensors. Complementary ring oscillator based sensors have a stronger response to analytes such as octanol and allyl propionate compared to a single transistor. A fabrication process that combines organic semiconductor circuitry with Si is described. The design and advantages of adaptive differential amplifiers with high gain and feedback are described. Voltage gains of ∼20 allow the detection of weak odorant inputs and the adaptive feedback allows for improved background elimination.

TL;DR: In this article, a tunable dispersion compensating device, based on thermally actuated fiber gratings, is proposed for high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed lightwave systems.
Abstract: Dispersion management is becoming paramount in high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed lightwave systems, that operate at per-channel rates of 40 Gb/s and higher. The dispersion tolerances, in these systems, are small enough that sources of dispersion variation, that are negligible in slower systems, become critically important to network performance. At these high-bit rates, active dispersion compensation modules may be required to respond dynamically to changes occurring in the network, such as variations in the per-channel power, reconfigurations of the channel's path that are caused by add-drop operations, and environmental changes, such as changes in ambient temperature. We present a comprehensive discussion of an emerging tunable dispersion compensating device, based on thermally actuated fiber gratings. These per-channel devices rely on a distributed on-fiber thin film heater, deposited onto the outer surface of a fiber Bragg grating. Current flowing through the thin film generates resistive heating at rates that are governed by the thickness profile of the metal film. A chirp in the grating is obtained by using a thin-film, whose thickness varies with position along the length of the grating in a prescribed manner; the chirp rate is adjusted by varying the applied current. The paper reviews some of the basic characteristics of these devices and their implementation, in a range of different applications, including the mitigation of power penalties associated with optical power variations. We present detailed analysis of the impact of group-delay ripple and polarization-mode dispersion on systems performance, and present results from systems experiments, that demonstrate the performance of these devices at bit rates of 10, 20, 40 and 160 Gb/s. We also discuss advantages and disadvantages of this technology, and compare to other devices.

TL;DR: The developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected demands and the performance objective is the accomodation of as many requests as possible without requiring any a priori knowledge regarding future arrivals.
Abstract: This paper develops an algorithm for integrated dynamic routing of bandwidth guaranteed paths in IP over WDM networks. By integrated routing, we mean routing taking into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers. Typically, routing in IP over WDM networks has been separated into routing at the IP layer taking only IP layer information into account, and wavelength routing at the optical layer taking only optical network information into account. The motivation for integrated routing is the potential for better network usage, and this is a topic which has not been been studied extensively. We develop an integrated routing algorithm that determines (1) whether to route an arriving request over the existing topology or whether it is better to open new wavelength paths. Sometimes it is better to open new wavelength paths even if it feasible to route the current demand over the existing IP topology due to previously set-up wavelength paths. 2) For routing over the existing IP-level topology, compute "good" routes. (3) If new wavelength paths are to be set-up, determine the routers amongst which new wavelength paths are to be set-up and compute "good" routes for these new wavelength paths. The performance objective is the accomodation of as many requests as possible without requiring any a priori knowledge regarding future arrivals. The route computations account for the presence or absence of wavelength conversion capabilities at optical crossconnects. We show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected demands.

TL;DR: A system for filtering an XML document with XPath expressions and a selective data dissemination system incorporating the system or the method is described in this paper, where a tree prober is associated with the tree builder and employs the XPath expression tree to probe the document data tree and obtain matches with the substrings.
Abstract: A system for, and method of, filtering an XML document with XPath expressions and a selective data dissemination system incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the filtering system includes: (1) a tree builder that builds a document data tree for the XML document and an XPath expression tree based on substrings in the XPath expressions and (2) a tree prober, associated with the tree builder, that employs the XPath expression tree to probe the document data tree and obtain matches with the substrings.

TL;DR: In this paper, a base layer encoder (C3140) and an enhancement layer decoder(C3180) are used to provide two kinds of encoded video signals which share a common output channel (C3260).
Abstract: High-resolution, progressive format video signals (on C3100) having high frame rates may be encoded by a base layer encoder (C3140) and an enhancement layer encoder (C3180) to provide two kinds of encoded video signals which share a common output channel (C3260). These encoded video signals are received at an input (C3270) of a video receiver which may use one or both of the two kinds of encoded video signal. Relatively lower performance high-definition televisions may thus receive video signals from higher performance transmitters and produce satisfactory pictures. Higher performance HDTVs will be able to utilize the full performance capabilities of these video signals.
