08 May 1997TL;DR: In this article, a broadband multiple access protocol for bi-directional hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks and other shared media networks is proposed, which supports downstream broadcast transmission from headend to cable modem, and also provides for allocation of bandwidth for cable modems to transmit back to the head end.
Abstract: The specification relates to a broadband multiple access protocol for bi-directional hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks and other shared media networks. The protocol supports downstream broadcast transmission from headend to cable modem, and also provides for allocation of bandwidth for cable modems to transmit back to the headend. The HE transmits and receives control messages in either ATM or VL format, depending upon CM capability, the determination of CM capability ascertained by the HE during the message flows interchanged between HE and CM while establishing a data link. Although the present invention is described in relation to an HFC network, it is also equally applicable to other shared media networks. The protocol supports different data access modes such as STM, ATM, and VL; within each subframe of a subframe/frame/masterframe structure. The protocol adapts to changing demands for a mix of circuit and packet mode applications and allocates upstream and downstream bandwidth in response to the a variety of bursty and isochronous traffic sources. In order to satisfy the quality of service requirements of varied applications, while maintaining high bandwidth efficiency, the protocol utilizes a subframe structure with subframe partitioning into regions; one region dedicated to STM payload transmission, a second region dedicated to ATM cell transmission, and a third region dedicated to VL payload transmissions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for determining a near-optimum subset of data, based on a selected model, from a large corpus of data sets of feature vectors corresponding to natural or other preselected divisions of the data corpus are mapped into matrices representative of such divisions.
Abstract: A system and method are described for determining a near-optimum subset of data, based on a selected model, from a large corpus of data Sets of feature vectors corresponding to natural or other preselected divisions of the data corpus are mapped into matrices representative of such divisions The invention operates to find a submatrix of full rank formed as a union of one or more of those division-based matrices A greedy algorithm utilizing Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization operates on the division matrices to find a near optimum submatrix and in a time bound representing a substantial improvement over prior-art methods An important application of the invention is the selection of a small number of sentences from a corpus of a very large number of such sentences from which the parameters of a duration model for speech synthesis can be estimated

TL;DR: It is concluded that a majority of neuronal NOS is converted quickly to a catalytically inactive ferrous-nitrosyl complex during NO synthesis independent of the external NO concentration, which indicates that NO binding to the NOS heme may be a fundamental feature of catalysis and functions to down-regulate NO synthesis by neurons.

TL;DR: Sustained changes in firing rate are supported not by either membrane multistability or changes in pacemaker currents, but rather by persistent changes in the rate or amplitude of synaptic inputs.
Abstract: To investigate the mechanisms of persistent neural activity, we obtained in vivo intracellular recordings from neurons in an oculomotor neural integrator of the goldfish during spontaneous saccades and fixations. Persistent changes in firing rate following saccades were associated with step changes in interspike membrane potential that were correlated with changes in eye position. Perturbation of persistent activity with brief intracellular current pulses designed to mimic saccadic input only induced transient changes of firing rate and membrane potential. When neurons were hyperpolarized below action potential threshold, position-correlated step changes in membrane potential remained. Membrane potential fluctuations were greater during more depolarized steps. These results suggest that sustained changes in firing rate are supported not by either membrane multistability or changes in pacemaker currents, but rather by persistent changes in the rate or amplitude of synaptic inputs.

05 Oct 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a personal information manager computer program for storing names, addresses, telephone numbers and the like for personal and business contacts includes a capability for delivering geographic information in response to user requests.
Abstract: A personal information manager computer program for storing names, addresses, telephone numbers and the like for personal and business contacts includes a capability for delivering geographic information in response to user requests. The personal information manager provides a display which includes one or more fields for entering or selecting contact information. The display also includes a number of buttons for requesting different types of geographic information, such as maps, directions, weather and yellow pages information. When the user clicks on one of the buttons, the personal information manager utilizes an address or other location identifier associated with the contact name to format a request to a geographic information server. The server uses the location identifier to retrieve the appropriate geographic information for that location, and sends the information to the personal information manager for display.
