Abstract: Recently, the capacity region of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel, with Gaussian codebooks and known-interference cancellation through dirty paper coding, was shown to equal the union of the capacity regions of a collection of MIMO multiple-access channels. We use this duality result to evaluate the system capacity achievable in a cellular wireless network with multiple antennas at the base station and multiple antennas at each terminal. Some fundamental properties of the rate region are exhibited and algorithms for determining the optimal weighted rate sum and the optimal covariance matrices for achieving a given rate vector on the boundary of the rate region are presented. These algorithms are then used in a simulation study to determine potential capacity enhancements to a cellular system through known-interference cancellation. We study both the circuit data scenario in which each user requires a constant data rate in every frame and the packet data scenario in which users can be assigned a variable rate in each frame so as to maximize the long-term average throughput. In the case of circuit data, the outage probability as a function of the number of active users served at a given rate is determined through simulations. For the packet data case, long-term average throughputs that can be achieved using the proportionally fair scheduling algorithm are determined. We generalize the zero-forcing beamforming technique to the multiple receive antennas case and use this as the baseline for the packet data throughput evaluation.

Abstract: Virtual colonoscopy is a non-invasive computerized medical procedure for examining the entire colon to detect polyps. We present an interactive virtual colonoscopy method, which uses a physicallybased camera control model and a hardware-assisted visibility algorithm. By employing a potential field and rigid body dynamics, our camera control supplies a convenient and intuitive mechanism for examining the colonic surface while avoiding collisions. Our Zbuffer-assisted visibility algorithm culls invisible regions based on their visibility through a chain of portals, thus providing interactive rendering speed. We demonstrate our method with experimental results on a plastic pipe phantom, the Visible Human, and several patients. Abstract: When a conversation takes place inside a room, the acoustic speech signal is distorted by wall reflections. The room’s effect on this signal can be characterized by a room impulse response. If the impulse response happens to be minimum phase, it can easily be inverted. Synthetic room impulse responses were generated using a point image method to solve for wall reflections. A Nyquist plot was used to determine whether a given impulse response was minimum phase. Certain synthetic room impulse responses were found to be minimum phase when the initial delay was removed. A minimum phase inverse filter was successfully used to remove the effect of a room impulse response on a speech signal.

Abstract: The spectrum and coherency are useful quantities for characterizing the temporal correlations and functional relations within and between point processes. This article begins with a review of these quantities, their interpretation, and how they may be estimated. A discussion of how to assess the statistical significance of features in these measures is included. In addition, new work is presented that builds on the framework established in the review section. This work investigates how the estimates and their error bars are modified by finite sample sizes. Finite sample corrections are derived based on a doubly stochastic inhomogeneous Poisson process model in which the rate functions are drawn from a low-variance gaussian process. It is found that in contrast to continuous processes, the variance of the estimators cannot be reduced by smoothing beyond a scale set by the number of point events in the interval. Alternatively, the degrees of freedom of the estimators can be thought of as bounded from above by the expected number of point events in the interval. Further new work describing and illustrating a method for detecting the presence of a line in a point process spectrum is also presented, corresponding to the detection of a periodic modulation of the underlying rate. This work demonstrates that a known statistical test, applicable to continuous processes, applies with little modification to point process spectra and is of utility in studying a point process driven by a continuous stimulus. Although the material discussed is of general applicability to point processes, attention will be confined to sequences of neuronal action potentials (spike trains), the motivation for this work.

Abstract: Strong magnetohydrodynamic activity has been observed in PDX neutral-beam--heated discharges. It occurs for ..beta../sub T/q> or =0.045 and is associated with a significant loss of fast ions and a drop in neutron emission. As much as 20%--40% of the beam heating power may be lost. The instability occurs in repetitive bursts of oscillations of < or =1 msec duration at 1--6 msec intervals. The magnetohydrodynamic activity has been dubbed the ''fishbone instability'' from its characteristic signature on the Mirnov coils.
