27 Jun 1995TL;DR: In this article, a file is divided into a number of blocks and a "signature" is generated for each such block, and a block is then stored in the backup memory only if its associated signature differs from a signature generated for an earlier version of the block.
Abstract: A facility is provided for storing in a backup memory only those blocks of a file, or disk partition, which differ from corresponding blocks forming an earlier version of the file. Specifically, a file is divided into a number of blocks and a "signature" is generated for each such block. A block is then stored in the backup memory only if its associated signature differs from a signature generated for an earlier version of the block. In addition, if two blocks of the current version of the file have identical signatures and are to be stored in the backup memory, then only one of the two blocks is stored in the memory and a simple message indicating that the other block is equal to the one block is stored in the memory for the other block. Further, the application of such signatures is advantageously applied to the opposite case of restoring a file using copies of previous versions of the file that are stored in the backup memory.

09 Dec 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for manipulating virtual objects in a virtual environment, for drawing curves and ribbons in the virtual environment and for selecting and executing commands for creating, deleting, moving, changing, and resizing virtual objects using intuitive hand gestures and motions.
Abstract: A system and method for manipulating virtual objects in a virtual environment, for drawing curves and ribbons in the virtual environment, and for selecting and executing commands for creating, deleting, moving, changing, and resizing virtual objects in the virtual environment using intuitive hand gestures and motions. The system is provided with a display for displaying the virtual environment and with a video gesture recognition subsystem for identifying motions and gestures of a user's hand. The system enables the user to manipulate virtual objects, to draw free-form curves and ribbons and to invoke various command sets and commands in the virtual environment by presenting particular predefined hand gestures and/or hand movements to the video gesture recognition subsystem.

TL;DR: In this paper, dynamically tunable, superlyophobic surfaces capable of undergoing a transition from profound superyophobic behavior to almost complete wetting have been demonstrated for the first time, and the results provide novel methods of manipulating liquids on the microscale.
Abstract: In this work, dynamically tunable, superlyophobic surfaces capable of undergoing a transition from profound superlyophobic behavior to almost complete wetting have been demonstrated for the first time. In the initial state, with no voltage applied, these surfaces exhibit contact angles as high as 150° for a wide variety of liquids with surface tensions ranging from 21.8 mN/m (ethanol) to 72.0 mN/m (water). Upon application of an electrical voltage, a transition from the superlyophobic state to wetting is observed. We have examined experimentally and theoretically the nature of these transitions. The reported results provide novel methods of manipulating liquids on the microscale.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Compton profile anisotropies of ordinary ice were found to correspond to distances of 1.72 and 2.85, which are close to the hydrogen bond length and the nearest-neighbor O-O distance, respectively.
Abstract: Periodic intensity variations in the measured Compton profile anisotropies of ordinary ice $\mathrm{I}h$ correspond to distances of 1.72 and 2.85 \AA{}, which are close to the hydrogen bond length and the nearest-neighbor O-O distance, respectively. We interpret this result as direct evidence for the substantial covalent nature of the hydrogen bond. Very good quantitative agreement between the data and a fully quantum mechanical bonding model for ice $\mathrm{I}h$ and the disagreement with a purely electrostatic (classical) bonding model support this interpretation and demonstrate how exquisitely sensitive Compton scattering is to the phase of the electronic wave function.

TL;DR: In this paper, loop complexes are used to inhibit the hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides, and rationally designed DNA catalysts are shown to be effective in promoting their hybridization.
Abstract: We describe kinetic control of DNA hybridization: loop complexes are used to inhibit the hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides; rationally designed DNA catalysts are shown to be effective in promoting their hybridization. This is the basis of a strategy for using DNA as a fuel to drive free-running artificial molecular machines.
