Abstract: Soft contact lamination of source/drain electrodes supported by gold-coated high-resolution rubber stamps against organic semiconductor films can yield high-performance organic transistors. This article presents a detailed study of the electrical properties of these devices, with an emphasis on the nature of the laminated contacts with the p- and n-type semiconductors pentacene and copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine, respectively. The analysis uses models developed for characterizing amorphous silicon transistors. The results demonstrate that the parasitic resistances related to the laminated contacts and their coupling to the transistor channel are considerably lower than those associated with conventional contacts formed by evaporation of gold electrodes directly on top of the organic semiconductors. Abstract: In this communication, evidence is provided that an organic thin-film-transistor (OTFT) can be used as a novel gas sensor. When exposed to chemical species at room temperature, four parameters can be measured: the bulk conductivity of the organic thin film, the field-induced conductivity, the transistor threshold voltage and the field effect mobility. Measurements of these parameters may allow for recognition of molecular species.

Abstract: High-speed optical communication requires ultrafast all-optical processing and switching capabilities. The Kerr nonlinearity, an ultrafast optical nonlinearity, is often used as the basic switching mechanism. A practical, small device that can be switched with ∼1‐pJ energies requires a large Kerr effect with minimal losses (both linear and nonlinear). We have investigated theoretically and experimentally a number of Se-based chalcogenide glasses. We have found a number of compounds with a Kerr nonlinearity hundreds of times larger than silica, making them excellent candidates for ultrafast all-optical devices.

Abstract: This paper describes a new method for the suppression of noise in images via the wavelet transform. The method relies on two measures. The first is a classic measure of smoothness of the image and is based on an approximation of the local Holder exponent via the wavelet coefficients. The second, novel measure takes into account geometrical constraints, which are generally valid for natural images. The smoothness measure and the constraints are combined in a Bayesian probabilistic formulation, and are implemented as a Markov random field (MRF) image model. The manipulation of the wavelet coefficients is consequently based on the obtained probabilities. A comparison of quantitative and qualitative results for test images demonstrates the improved noise suppression performance with respect to previous wavelet-based image denoising methods.

Abstract: Today, even a moderately sized corporate intranet contains multiple firewalls and routers, which are all used to enforce various aspects of the global corporate security policy. Configuring these devices to work in unison is difficult, especially if they are made by different vendors. Even testing or reverse engineering an existing configuration (say when a new security administrator takes over) is hard. Firewall configuration files are written in low level formalisms, whose readability is comparable to assembly code, and the global policy is spread over all the firewalls that are involved. To alleviate some of these difficulties, we designed and implemented a novel firewall analysis tool. Our software allows the administrator to easily discover and test the global firewall policy (either a deployed policy or a planned one). Our tool uses a minimal description of the network topology and directly parses the various vendor-specific low level configuration files. It interacts with the user through a query-and-answer session, which is conducted at a much higher level of abstruction. A typical question our tool can answer is "from which machines can our DMZ be reached and with which services?" Thus, the tool complements existing vulnerability analysis tools, as it can be used before a policy is actually deployed it operates on a more understandable level of abstraction, and it deals with all the firewalls at once.
