TL;DR: In this article, a constant-pressure axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer along a circular cylinder of radius a is studied at large values of the frictional Reynolds number a+ (based upon a) with the boundary-layer thickness δ of order a. The condition that the two expansions match requires the existence, at the lowest order, of a log region in the usual two-dimensional co-ordinates (u+, y+).
Abstract: A constant-pressure axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer along a circular cylinder of radius a is studied at large values of the frictional Reynolds number a+ (based upon a) with the boundary-layer thickness δ of order a. Using the equations of mean motion and the method of matched asymptotic expansions, it is shown that the flow can be described by the same two limit processes (inner and outer) as are used in two-dimensional flow. The condition that the two expansions match requires the existence, at the lowest order, of a log region in the usual two-dimensional co-ordinates (u+, y+). Examination of available experimental data shows that substantial log regions do in fact exist but that the intercept is possibly not a universal constant. Similarly, the solution in the outer layer leads to a defect law of the same form as in two-dimensional flow; experiment shows that the intercept in the defect law depends on δ/a. It is concluded that, except in those extreme situations where a+ is small (in which case the boundary layer may not anyway be in a fully developed turbulent state), the simplest analysis of axisymmetric flow will be to use the two-dimensional laws with parameters that now depend on a+ or δ/a as appropriate.

TL;DR: In rats 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid effectively counteracts the lipemic and atherosclerotic response of massive doses of vitamin D2 and regressed the formation of atheromatous arterial lesions.
Abstract: In rats 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid effectively counteracts the lipemic and atherosclerotic response of massive doses of vitamin D2. It regressed the formation of atheromatous arterial lesions. Furthermore the significant decrease in serum β-lipoprotein levels on HMG treatment could be due to decrease in VLDL triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

TL;DR: In this article, the qualitative behavior of an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer is similar to that of a two-dimensional boundary layer in the wall region, where as in the outer region the effects of transverse curvature are observed.
Abstract: In an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer along a circular cylinder at constant pressure, measurements have been made of mean velocity profile and turbulence characteristics: longitudinal velocity fluctuations, Reynolds shear stress, transverse correlation and spectrum. It has been found that the qualitative behaviour of an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer is similar to that of a two-dimensional boundary layer in the wall region, where as in the outer region the effects of transverse curvature are observed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the structure of individual bromo-acetoxy acids has been established by chemical as well as spectral studies, which can be explained on the basis of different conformations of diastereoisomeric 2,3-glycols.
Abstract: The reaction oferythro- andthreo-glycols oftrans-2-hexadecenoic andtrans-2-docosenoic acids with hydrogen bromide in the presence of acetic anhydride has been investigated. In each case,erythro-2,3-dihydroxy acid gave a separable mixture of isomericthreo-2(3)-bromo-3(2)-acetoxy acids. In contrast,threo-2,3-dihydroxy acid yielded only one isomericerythro-2-bromo-3-acetoxy acid. The structures of individual bromo-acetoxy acids have been established by chemical as well as spectral studies. Stereoselectivity observed in the reaction of hydrogen bromide withthreo-glycol has been explained on the basis of different conformations of the diastereoisomeric 2,3-glycols.

TL;DR: The haemoglobins of six different species of trematodes and their three different hosts were spectrophotometrically investigated, and were found to contain porphyrin IX as the common prosthetic group.
Abstract: The haemoglobins of six different species of trematodes: Gastrothylax crumenifer, Srivastavaia indica, Gigantocotyle explanatum, Fasciolopsis buski, Gastrodiscoides hominis, Isoparorchis hypselobagri and their three different hosts: Bubalus bubalis, Sus scrofa, and Wallago attu were spectrophotometrically investigated, and were found to contain porphyrin IX as the common prosthetic group. Oxyhaemoglobin, carbonmonoxy-haemoglobin and reduced haemoglobin of all 6 species of trematodes and their 3 hosts under study gave similar absorption maxima. Distinct differences were, however, observed in the nature of the spectral curves of cyanmethaemoglobin which exhibit 2 absorption maxima in the beta and the alpha region in the case of all trematodes whereas in the case of similar host haemoglobin derivatives only one single broad peak in the 536-540 nm region was obtained. With respect to pyridine derivatives all the trematode haemoglobins show a sharp peak in the alpha region and a minor hump in the beta region except Gastrothylax crumenifer. All three host pyridine haemoglobin derivatives show only a single broad peak at 570 nm.

TL;DR: In this paper, the first three spectra were analyzed with the help of the spectra recorded in the Physics Department of Lund University, Y VI, Zr VII, Nb VIII and Mo IX, except for revising in Y VI the 4p4 1S0 and 4p35s(4S3/2)2 levels.
Abstract: With the help of the spectra recorded in the Physics Department of Lund University, Y VI, Zr VII, Nb VIII and Mo IX are freshly analysed. The five 4s24p4 ground levels and the ten 4s24p35s levels of previous analyses are confirmed in the first three spectra, except for revising in Y VI the 4p4 1S0 and 4p35s(4S3/2)2 levels and interchanging 5s(2D3/2)1 with 5s(2D3/2)2. All level values are improved due to our new measurements. A new analysis of Mo IX establishing all the 4p4 and 4p35s levels is being reported.

TL;DR: 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid significantly decreased cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid levels in whole serum, serum β-lipoproteins and liver of Triton-induced hyperlipidemic rats.
Abstract: 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid (HMG) significantly decreased cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid levels in whole serum, serum β-lipoproteins and liver of Triton-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Therapeutically 50 mg HMG/kg is equivalent to 200 mg nicotinic acid/kg in lowering all these lipid parameters. HMG may exert its hypolipidemic effect through inhibition of lipoprotein synthesis.

TL;DR: The absence of strong specific selectivity by the fish for a variety of planktonic food organisms was found to be a phenomenon compensatory to stenophagism, in order to make use of whichever food items remained in the habitat at the time when the preferred genera of plankon were not available, due to the process of succession.
Abstract: Food selectivity by the common freshwater carp, Esomus danricus (Ham.) was studied through Ivlev's equation of electivity. The selective feeding seemed to be influenced by many factors, including the accessibility, abundance and taste, of the food items, the mechanical and physiological adaptations on the part of the fish to capture and digest those food organisms, as also the inherent and instinctive property of the fish to prefer certain types of food over the others. The absence of strong specific selectivity by the fish for a variety of planktonic food organisms was found to be a phenomenon compensatory to stenophagism, in order to make use of whichever food items remained in the habitat at the time when the preferred genera of plankton were not available, due to the process of succession.

TL;DR: In this paper, the polarization and angular distribution of the Mossbauer gamma-rays in the presence of nuclear hyperfine fields are calculated with the aid of rotation matrices, and the results are presented for the M1 and E2 radiations in the crystal fixed-axis system.
Abstract: From the multipole radiation theory the polarization and angular distribution of the Mossbauer gamma-rays in the presence of nuclear hyperfine fields are calculated. With the aid of rotation matrices explicit results are presented for theM1 andE2 radiations in the crystal fixed-axis system. The calculated degree of polarization of the gamma-ray for an arbitrary direction of propagation is always unity if the nuclearm-sublevel degeneracy does not exist and is less than unity when the Kramer or other types of degeneracies exist. For the case of electricfield gradient hyperfine interaction the degree of polarization has been calculated for the 3/2−→1/2− and 2+→0+ transitions and is found to be a very sensitive function of the hyperfine-field parameters.
