TL;DR: In this paper, the seed oils of Mucuna pruriens (Leguminosae) and Urena lobata (Malvaceae) were found to contain HBr-reacting acids to the extent of 1.3 and 10.8% respectively.
Abstract: Seed oils of Mucuna pruriens (Leguminosae) and Urena lobata (Malvaceae) were found to contain HBr-reacting acids to the extent of 1.3 and 10.8% respectively. Acetylation of the M. pruriens seed oil, followed by saponification and separation of the acids, gave 12,13-dihydroxyoleic acid. From this and other evidence it is concluded that 12,13-epoxyoleic (vernolic) acid is present as a constituent of the glycerides. On the other hand, the cyclopropenoid material in U. lobata oil was characterised as a mixture of malvalic (4.8%) and sterculic (6%) acids by the gas-liquid chromatography (g.l.c.) of the silver nitrate-methanol treated methyl esters. Seed oils of Vernonia anthelmintica and Sterculia foetida were used as reference standards.

Abstract: Fatty acid composition of six species belonging to different less familiar botanical families was determined by making use of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. All species were found to have high iodine values, out of which one species (item 2) showed iodine value above 180. The total of “linolenic” and “linoleic” acids varied from 61.1 to 74.8%. Four species (Passiflora foetida, Chrozophora plicata, Salvia plebeia and Fimbristylis quinqueangularis) deserve agronomic evaluation as the first species resembles Safflower (especially grown in tropics) and the latter three species yield linoleicrich seed oils.

TL;DR: In this paper, the adsorption behavior of 52 metal ions has been studied in DMSO-HCI systems using stannic arsenate layers, and a remarkable feature of this study is a dramatic decrease in adsorptive behavior of many ions when compared to the corresponding water HCI systems.
Abstract: The adsorption behavior of 52 metal ions has been studied in DMSO-HCI systems using stannic arsenate layers. A remarkable feature of this study is a dramatic decrease in adsorption of many ions when compared to the corresponding water-HCI systems. This specific DMSO effect has been explained and used for important binary and ternary separations. In DMSO-5 M HCI (1:1), Zr4 + and Mo6 + have been separated from each other and from a mixture of Th4 +, Ca2 +, Y3 +, Nb5 +, Ta5 +, In3 +, Ti4 +, and the rare earths.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of the ester carbonyl adjacent to the double bond in 2b was found to suppress dehydrobromination (elimination) reaction and favors only substitution (SN2), unlike the allylically brominated derivatives of internal olefinic compounds.
Abstract: Methyltrans-2-hexadecenoate (1b) on allylic bromination with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) (0.5 mole) yielded methyl 4-bromo-trans-2-hexadecenoate (2b) in 50% yield. Reaction with 2.0 moles of NBS afforded the allylic bromide (2b, δ 80%) as well as the dibromide (3b). Alkaline hydrolysis of the bromo ester (2b) yielded 4-hydroxy-trans-2-hexadecenoic acid (4a, δ 70%) and an unexpected product, 4-oxo-hexadecanoic acid (5a, δ 30%). A mechanism involving rearrangement is proposed to account for this unusual product. The effect of the ester carbonyl adjacent to the double bond in2b was found to suppress dehydrobromination (elimination) reaction and favors only substitution (SN2), unlike the allylically brominated derivatives of internal olefinic compounds. The CrO3-pyridine oxidation of4b yielded the corresponding unsaturated ketone (7b). The structures of individual reaction products were established by elemental analyses as well as by spectral studies.

TL;DR: The breeding system of Solanum integrifolium has been studied and it has been elucidated that only long-style flowers are female-fertile and some of the flowers, irrespective of their stylar morphism, also exhibit male sterility which is uncommon inSolanum.
Abstract: The breeding system of Solanum integrifolium has been studied with the view of setting up a breeding programme. Three flower types are distinguished on the basis of style length. The results of crosses among these types have elucidated that only long-style flowers are female-fertile. The medium and short-style flowers are unable to set fruits. Some of the flowers, irrespective of their stylar morphism, also exhibit male sterility which is uncommon in Solanum. The biological significance of the stylar heteromorphism has been discussed in relation to evolutionary trends in the genus and the probable cause of this phenomenon speculated upon.

TL;DR: The chromatographic behavior of 48 metal ions on plain and stannic arsenate papers has been studied in DMSO/1 mol dm−3 HNO3 in (9∶1), (7∶3), (5∶5), (3∶7), and (1∶9) ratios as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The chromatographic behaviour of 48 metal ions on plain and stannic arsenate papers has been studied in DMSO/1 mol dm−3 HNO3 in (9∶1), (7∶3), (5∶5), (3∶7), and (1∶9) ratios and DMSO/8 mol dm−3 HNO3 in (7∶3) ratio. It has been found that for K(I), Rb(I), and Cs(T) Rf=KC1/2 where C is the nitric acid concentration. DMSO/8 mol dm−3 HNO3 (7∶3) is almost specific for In(III) and separates In(III) from Ga(III) and Al(III). Even on plain papers pure DMSO is a useful solvent which separates: Ca(II)−Mg(II), Sn(II)−Sb(III), Cd(II)−Zn(II), Mg(II)−Al(III), Be(II)−Mg(II) and TiO2+−VO2. A comparative study has been made of DMSO−HNO3 and butanol-HNO3 systems for K(II), Rb(I) and Cs(I).

TL;DR: Various enzymatic systems of glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle were studied in the cell-free extracts of three digenetic trematodes and suggested the possible existence of the pentosephosphate pathway and a capacity for gluconeogenesis in all trematode.
Abstract: Various enzymatic systems of glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid cycle were studied in the cell-free extracts of three digenetic trematodes —Gastrothylax crumenifer andSrivastavaia indica from the rumen of the water buffaloBubalus bubalis L., andIsoparorchis hypselobagri from the catfishWallago attu. The significant activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-diphosphatase suggested the possible existence of the pentosephosphate pathway and a capacity for gluconeogenesis in all trematodes. However, marked quantitative differences in enzyme activities were found in these parasites.

TL;DR: It is thus possible to avoid ‘bait-shyness’ by using whole and then husked grains of suck pulses for poisoning this pest, and apparently poisoning in one form (whole grains) does not affect the preference for the other form (husked grains).
Abstract: Black rats,Rattus rattus L., poisoned with 0·02%zinc phosphide in whole lentil (Lens esculenta) or green gram (Phaseolus aureus) did not accept their whole grains again (bait-shyness). No similar aversion was, however, shown to husked grains of lentil or green gram.
