TL;DR: High performance liquid chromatography analysis of samples by liquid-liquid extraction procedure showed the presence of some pesticides like DDT, alpha-BHC, aldrin, dieldrin etc with the probable role of contaminating pesticides in the river water.
Abstract: Water samples from Ganga river were collected from 3 different locations viz. Kachla, Fatehgarh and Kannauj (U.P.). High performance liquid chromatography analysis of samples by liquid-liquid extraction procedure showed the presence of some pesticides like DDT, alpha-BHC, aldrin, dieldrin etc. DDT, alpha-BHC, DDD, aldrin and dieldrin were present at concentration ranges of 3.33-5.33 ppb, 1.73-3.01 ppb, 0.88-2.41 ppb, 1.17-2.81 ppb and 0.49-4.11 ppb, respectively. The organophosphorus pesticides like dimethoate and methyl parathion were also detected at the concentration levels of 0.41-0.56 ppb and 0.16-0.50 ppb, respectively. The organic substances in the test samples were extracted by XAD-resin and liquid-liquid extraction procedures, and the extracts were assayed for mutagenic potential by the Ames Salmonella/microsome test. The test samples exhibited a remarkable degree of mutagenicity with TA98, TA100 and TA97a strains with the probable role of contaminating pesticides in the river water.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple circuit for realising an electronically tunable grounded capacitance multiplier is presented, which employs two operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs), an operational amplifier (OA) and a grounded capacitor (C).
Abstract: A simple circuit is given for realising an electronically tunable grounded capacitance multiplier. It employs two operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs), an operational amplifier (OA) and a grounded capacitor (C). The circuit provides wide-range linear tuning of C-values through the bias control of OTAs. This multiplier is easily modified to realise a low-component floating C-multiplier. The circuits are MOS/Bi-MOS compatible and present definite advantages over the available multipliers. Experimental results are included.

TL;DR: Results clearly show that the enhanced lipid peroxidation may provide a basis of lead-induced neurotoxicity.
Abstract: Lipid peroxidation in vitro homogenates of brain was examined as sequela of lead toxicity. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in homogenates of rat brain (1 ml, 5% w/v) treated with lead (50 μg) alone or in combination with ascorbic acid (100 μg), alphatocopherol (100 μg) or hydroquinone (100 μg) were evaluated. The levels of MDA were consistently evoked by lead in a dose-related manner. The toxicity of lead was further advanced by the action of the pro-oxidant drug ascorbic acid on the brain. However, the anti-oxidant drugs alphatocopherol and hydroquinone decreased the toxic effect of lead on the brain. These results clearly show that the enhanced lipid peroxidation may provide a basis of lead-induced neurotoxicity.

TL;DR: In this article, heavy metal concentrations in wastewaters from the industrial estate of Aligarh city (U.P.) India were determined and the analysis of test samples revealed significantly higher levels of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni compared with the pure domestic samples.
Abstract: Heavy metal concentrations in wastewaters from the industrial estate of Aligarh city (U.P.) India were determined. The analysis of test samples revealed significantly higher levels of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni compared with the pure domestic samples. Raw wastewaters were screened for mutagenic potential using the Ames Salmonella/microsomal test. Mutagenic activity was observed with industrial as well as domestic waste samples. Salmonella typhimurium strains TA102 and TA104 were the most sensitive both in the absence and presence of S9 fraction. A significant decrease in the survival of DNA repair defective Escherichia coli mutants recA, lex A, and polA was observed as compared to their wild-type counterparts in the presence of wastewater. © by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: The results of these studies suggest that pyrolusite might provide an economical method for the removal of lead from industrial waste water.
Abstract: The adsorption of metals from aqueous solutions of Pb2+, Zn2+ and Mg2+ on naturally occurring pyrolusite have been studied. The chemical stability of the pyrolusite has been determined in NaOH, H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, NaCl and NK4Cl solutions of various concentrations. Adsorption of the metal ions followed the order Pb2+>Zn2+>Cd2+. The maximum adsorption of Pb2+ (100%) occurred at pH 7. the relation between the amount of Pb2+ adsorbed per unit weight of pyrolusite and the concentration of Pb2+ at equilibrium follows the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The efficiency of pyrolusite has been demonstrated by removing lead from synthetic waste water. 100% and 96% removal of lead have been achieved from synthetic waste water containing 5 mg l−1 and 120 mg l−1 of Pb2+ respectively at pH 7. The results of these studies suggest that pyrolusite might provide an economical method for the removal of lead from industrial waste water.

Abstract: A detailed and systematic review of the EPR studies of high-Tc superconductors and their related and parent systems are presented. The various EPR signals reported from the high-Tc oxides and from their related cuprates are summarized. The experimental evidences highlighted by various workers claiming the EPR silence of copper in the high-Tc materials are also reviewed. Various theoretical models suggested by several workers to explain the observed unusual EPR silence of copper in the high-Tc superconductors are critically discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Indian species of Gonatocerus Nees are revised and a new species-group (asulcifrons-group) is proposed for two Indian species.
Abstract: The Indian species of Gonatocerus Nees are revised. Thirty-nine valid species are recognized from India, including eleven species described as new in this paper. The Indian species are referred to three already known species-groups (ater-, sulphuripes-, litoralis-gioxips), and a new species-group (asulcifrons-group) proposed here for two Indian species. Separate keys to the species-groups and to species of three groups are given. The present study led to the proposal of 13 specific synonymies. Also five species are recorded from India for the first time, one species (kodaianus) described in Ooctonus Haliday is transferred to Gonatocerus as a new combination, and one species, G. longicrus Kieffer, is regarded as insertae sedis.

TL;DR: The alkaline-induced unwinding of calf thymus DNA permitted the measurement of the number of strand breaks formed by furfural and methylfurfural, as a function of reaction time with these mutagenic agents, and it was found that only in the case of methyfural treatment did depurination lead to the degradation of DNA.
Abstract: Furfural and methylfurfural are dietary mutagens and are present in various food products and beverages. The alkaline-induced unwinding of calf thymus DNA permitted the measurement of the number of strand breaks formed by furfural and methylfurfural, as a function of reaction time with these mutagenic agents. At the fixed DNA bp/mutagens molar ratio of 1:4, furfural treatment resulted in the formation of almost three times as many strand breaks at the end of 16 h reaction. In the presence of 0.2 M NaCl, a 60% reduction in strand breaks occurred in the case of furfural but only 25% with methylfurfural. It is also found that only in the case of methylfurfural treatment did depurination lead to the degradation of DNA, possibly through the alkylation of DNA bases and phosphates. These results suggest that furfural and methylfurfural may act on DNA by different reaction mechanisms.
