Abstract: Three heterocyclic compounds namely 3-anilino-5-imino-4-phenyl-1, 2,4-thiadiazoline (AIPT), 3-anilino-5-imino-4-tolyl-1, 2,4-thiadiazoline (AITT), and 3-anilino-5-imino-4-chlorophenyl-1, 2,4-thiadiazoline (AICT) were synthesized and their influence on the inhibition of corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 was investigated by weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The values of activation energy and free energy of adsorption of these compounds were also calculated. Potentiodynamic polarization studies were carried out at room temperature, and showed that all the compounds were mixed type inhibitors causing blocking of active sites on the metal. The inhibition efficiency of the compounds was found to vary with concentration, temperature and immersion time. Good inhibition efficiency was evidenced in both acid solutions. The adsorption of the compounds on mild steel for both acids was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was also used to investigate the mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

Abstract: Experiments were conducted on 150 × 600 mm cylindrical specimens to investigate creep and drying shrinkage of concrete containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The creep strain was measured for 150 days under a constant sustained load. The creep strain recovery was measured for one subsequent month after the removal of the sustained load. The shrinkage strain was also measured for 180 days. The amount of cement replacement by GGBFS was 20%, 40% and 60% by weight of cement. The test results indicate that higher GGBFS percentage exhibits higher creep and shrinkage strains. At 150 days of sustained loading, the average creep coefficients of 20%, 40% and 60% GGBFS concrete are 16.3%, 33.3% and 55.2% higher than plain concrete. In the absence of a creep and shrinkage prediction model for GGBFS concrete, a modification factor is suggested for incorporating the effect of GGBFS proportion in the existing models. The available models for predicting creep and shrinkage strain of plain concrete are compared.

Abstract: Over the past decade, the field of carbon dots (Cdots) has opened up a completely new area of research in nanoscience and technology because of their extraordinary optical properties and corresponding multifaceted applications. In this review we aim to highlight the green synthesis of Cdots along with recent speculations, demonstrating the origin of their exciting photoluminescence properties. Further, structural engineering, such as surface state modifications, generating crystallinity by heteroatom doping and controlling size, has induced new characteristics in Cdot structures, indispensable for energy conversion and storage applications. This article covers recent findings on generating long-range ordered structures in Cdots and corresponding advancements in energy related applications such as photovoltaic cells, photocatalysis, optoelectronics, batteries and supercapacitors and photothermal energy conversion. Finally, important challenges such as production of crystalline Cdots and future directions of Cdot based research are discussed.

Abstract: Context: Medicinal plants are a largely unexplored source of drug repository. Urtica dioica L. (Urticaceae) is used in traditional medicine to treat diverse conditions.Objective: The present study describes the antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, antibacterial activity, and toxicological studies of Urtica dioica.Materials and methods: U. dioica leaves were subjected to solvent extraction with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and aqueous, respectively, and screened for antidiabetic (300 mg/kg bw by glucose tolerance test; GTT), antiinflammatory (200 mg/kg bw by rat paw edema assay) and antibacterial activities [by disc-diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays].
