Abstract: Most soils contain large reserves of total phosphorus (P), but its fixation and precipitation with soil constituents cause a major P-deficiency and severely restrict the growth and yield of plants. The use of chemical P-fertilizers is obviously the best means to circumvent P-deficiency, but their use is always limited due to its spiraling cost. In order to increase the availability of P and to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, solubilization of insoluble P by phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms has provided an alternative to chemical phosphatic fertilizer. Besides P, these organisms promote the growth of plants by N2 fixation, enhancement of other plant nutrients, synthesizing phytohormones, suppressing plant diseases (bio-control) and reducing the toxicity of ethylene through 1-aminocyclopropane-1carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. In this chapter, attention is paid to understanding the fundamental and molecular basis as to how precisely these microbes, notably bacteria and fungi, help plants to grow better in P-deficient soils. Effective use of such microbes is likely to result in an ideal cropping system with a lesser impact on the environment through decreased application of chemical fertilizers.

Abstract: The elliptic flow coefficient (v(2)) of identified particles in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The results were obtained with the Scalar Product method, a two-particle correlation technique, using a pseudo-rapidity gap of |Delta eta| > 0.9 between the identified hadron under study and the reference particles. The v (2) is reported for pi(+/-), K-+/-, K-S(0), p+(p) over bar, phi, Lambda+(Lambda) over bar, Xi+(Xi) over bar (+) and Omega(-)+(Omega) over bar (+) in several collision centralities. In the low transverse momentum (p(T)) region, p(T) 3 GeV/c.

Abstract: This article explores the novel gold nanoparticle-enhanced photodynamic therapy of methylene blue against recalcitrant pathogenic Candida albicans biofilm. Physiochemical (X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible absorption, photon cross-correlation, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy) and electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize gold nanoparticles as well as gold nanoparticle-methylene blue conjugate. A 38.2-J/cm(2) energy density of 660-nm diode laser was applied for activation of gold nanoparticle-methylene blue conjugate and methylene blue against C. albicans biofilm and cells. Antibiofilm assays, confocal laser scanning, and electron microscopy were used to investigate the effects of the conjugate. Physical characteristics of the gold nanoparticles (21 ± 2.5 nm and 0.2 mg/mL) and methylene blue (20 μg/mL) conjugation were confirmed by physicochemical and electron microscopy techniques. Antibiofilm assays and microscopic studies showed significant reduction of biofilm and adverse effect against Candida cells in the presence of conjugate. Fluorescence spectroscopic study confirmed type I photo toxicity against biofilm. Gold nanoparticle conjugate-mediated photodynamic therapy may be used against nosocomially acquired refractory Candida albicans biofilm.
