Abstract: The invention relates to a method for identifying and extracting images of one or more users in an interactive environment comprising the steps of : - obtaining a depth map (7) of a scene in the form of an array of depth values, and an image (8) of said scene in the form of a corresponding array of pixel values, said depth map (7) and said image (8) being registered; applying a coordinate transformation to said depth map (7) and said image (8) for obtaining a corresponding array (15) containing the 3D positions in a real- world coordinates system and pixel values points; - grouping said points according to their relative positions, by using a clustering process (18) so that each group contains points that are in the same region of space and correspond to a user location (19); - defining individual volumes of interest (20) each corresponding to one of said user locations (19); - selecting, from said array (15) containing the 3D positions and pixel values, the points located in said volumes of interest for obtaining segmentation masks (35) for each user; - applying said segmentation masks (35) to said image (8) for extracting images of said users. The invention also relates to a method for recognizing gestures of said users.

Abstract: In this paper, an experimental mixed reality using a multimodal approach is introduced which lets users play characters in interactive narratives as though acting on a stage. Users interact with characters through speech, attitude, and gesture, enhancing their immersion in the virtual world. This system provides a small-scale but complete integration of multimodal communication in interactive storytelling. It uses a narrative's semantic context to focus multimodal input processing-that is, the system interprets users' acting (the multimodal input) in the mixed reality stage in terms of narrative functions representing users' contributions to the unfolding plot.

Abstract: User interaction with virtual agents generally takes place in virtual environments in which there is clear separation between the virtual actors and the user, due to the fact that in most cases, the user is in some way external to the virtual world In Mixed-Reality Interactive Storytelling, the user’s video image is captured in real time and inserted into a virtual world populated by autonomous synthetic actors with which the user interacts The user in turn watches the composite world projected on a large screen, following a ”magic mirror” metaphor This context leads to re-investigating the techniques by which the user interacts with virtual actors, as well as exploring specific research problems In this paper, we discuss some specificities of user interaction with virtual actors in Mixed Reality Interactive Storytelling After a brief introduction to our system’s architecture and the example scenario supporting our experiments, we describe various techniques supporting multi-modal interaction with virtual actors

Abstract: The U-CREATE project aims at efficient content creation for new technologies, in particular interactive setups, Mixed Reality experiences and location-based services. A graphical authoring tool is developed to allow one to create elaborated contents in a fast and easy way. The present paper introduces the tool and elaborates on its main components, which allow the user to author an interactive story and also to manage the connected interaction devices.

Abstract: Entertainment systems promise to be a significant application for Mixed Reality. Recently, a growing number of Mixed Reality applications have included interaction with virtual actors and storytelling. However, AI-based Interactive Storytelling techniques have not yet been explored in the context of Mixed Reality. In this paper, we describe a fully-integrated first prototype based upon the adaptation of an Interactive Storytelling technique to a Mixed Reality system. After a description of the real time image processing techniques that support the creation of a hybrid environment, we introduce the storytelling technique and the essential modalities of user interactions in the Mixed Reality context. Finally, we illustrate these experiments by discussing examples obtained from the system.
