TL;DR: In this paper, a system that provides early results and/or incorporates semantic tagging is proposed to determine the end of an utterance for purposes of automatic speech recognition (ASR).
Abstract: Determining the end of an utterance for purposes of automatic speech recognition (ASR) may be improved with a system that provides early results and/or incorporates semantic tagging. Early ASR results of an incoming utterance may be prepared based at least in part on an estimated endpoint and processed by a natural language understanding (NLU) process while final results, based at least in part on a final endpoint, are determined. If the early results match the final results, the early NLU results are already prepared for early execution. The endpoint may also be determined based at least in part on the content of the utterance, as represented by semantic tagging output from ASR processing. If the tagging indicate completion of a logical statement, an endpoint may be declared, or a threshold for silent frames prior to declaring an endpoint may be adjusted.

Abstract: Features are disclosed for processing and interpreting natural language, such as interpretations of user utterances, in multi-turn dialog interactions. Context information regarding interpretations of user utterances and system responses to the user utterances can be maintained. Subsequent user utterances can be interpreted using the context information, rather than being interpreted without context. In some cases, interpretations of subsequent user utterances can be merged with interpretations of prior user utterances using a rule-based framework. Rules may be defined to determine which interpretations may be merged and under what circumstances they may be merged.

Abstract: A project-level assessment of monetary and carbon costs and benefits for five classes of global warming response options in the forest sector is attempted for typical Brazilian conditions. Options considered are: silvicultural plantations (for pulp, charcoal and sawlogs), sustainable timber management and reduction of deforestation. Comparison of pulpwood and sawlog plantations with the vegetation characteristic of deforested areas indicates a modest carbon benefit. Plantations for charcoal can produce a substantial carbon benefit through fossil fuel substitution, but much of this calculated benefit disappears if discount rates greater than zero are applied to carbon. Sustainable timber management, when compared with existing forest, represents a net carbon loss, accumulation of carbon in wood products being insufficient to compensate for biomass reduction over a 100 year time scale. Reduction of deforestation has great potential as a global warming response option, its per-hectare carbon benefits being approximately four times that of silvicultural plantation establishment for pulp and sawlogs over a 100 year period. The costs of reducing deforestation are difficult to assess, however, due to the importance of government policy changes such as removal of land speculation and land tenure establishment as motives for clearing. Although these changes would not cost money and would have tremendous carbon and other benefits, they have not yet occurred.
