Abstract: Biodiesel, chemically defined as monoalkyl esters of long chain fatty acids, are derived from renewable feed stocks like vegetable oils and animal fats. It is produced by both batch and continuous transesterification processes in which, oil or fat is reacted with a monohydric alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. The conventional method of producing biodiesel involves acid and base catalysts to form fatty acid alkyl esters. Downstream processing costs and environmental problems associated with biodiesel production and byproducts recovery have led to the search for alternative production methods and alternative substrates. Enzymatic reactions involving lipases can be an excellent alternative to produce biodiesel through a process commonly referred to as alcoholysis, a form of transesterification reaction or through an interesterification reaction. In order to increase the cost effectiveness of the process, the enzymes are immobilized using a suitable matrix. The use of immobilized lipases and whole cells may lower the overall cost, while presenting less downstream processing problems. Main focus of this paper is to discuss the important parameters that affect the biodiesel yield, various immobilization techniques employed, mechanisms and kinetics of transesterification reaction and the recent advances in continuous transesterification processes.

Abstract: We have shown that separate dose of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) at a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. exerts antidiabetic potential in streptozotocin (STZ) (45 mg/kg b.w.) nicotinamide induced diabetic rats. In the present study we have attempted to compare the antihyperglycemic activity exerted by the combined treatment of THC/CGA with THC and CGA alone treated diabetic rats. After the experimental period of 45 days we observed that supplementation with combined dose of THC/CGA significantly decreased glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1C)) and increased the levels of plasma insulin, C-peptide, hemoglobin and glycogen which were decreased upon STZ treatment and also significantly reversed the altered activities of gluconeogenic enzymes such as glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, and of glycolytic enzymes such as glucokinase and hexokinase in the tissues of experimental rats as compared to their individual supplementation. Thus our results substantiate that though THC and CGA alone found to exert hypoglycemic activity the maximum hypoglycemic effect was always observed in diabetic rats treated THC/CGA and this summed effect seems to have a promising value for the development of a potent phytomedicine for diabetes.

Abstract: Combination chemoprevention by diet-derived agents that induce apoptosis is a promising strategy to control gastric cancer, the second most common malignancy worldwide. The present study was undertaken to investigate the apoptosis-inducing potential of a combination of S-allylcysteine (SAC), an organosulphur constituent of garlic and lycopene, a tomato carotenoid during N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitroso-guanidine (MNNG) and saturated sodium chloride (S-NaCl)-induced gastric carcinogenesis in Wistar rats using the apoptosis-associated proteins Bcl-2, Bax, Bim, caspase 8 and caspase 3 as markers. Animals administered MNNG followed by S-NaCl developed squamous cell carcinomas of the stomach associated with increased Bcl-2 expression and decreased expression of Bax, Bim, caspase 8 and caspase 3. Although SAC and lycopene alone significantly suppressed the development of gastric cancer, administration of SAC and lycopene in combination was more effective in inhibiting MNNG-induced stomach tumours and modulating the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins. Our results suggest that induction of apoptosis by SAC and lycopene combination represents one of the possible mechanisms that could account for their synergistic chemopreventive activity against gastric cancer.
