Abstract: Multihoming is often used by large enterprises and stub ISPs to connect to the Internet. In this paper, we design a series of novel smart routing algorithms to optimize cost and performance for multihomed users. We evaluate our algorithms through both analysis and extensive simulations based on realistic charging models, traffic demands, performance data, and network topologies. Our results suggest that these algorithms are very effective in minimizing cost and at the same time improving performance. We further examine the equilibrium performance of smart routing in a global setting and show that a smart routing user can improve its performance without adversely affecting other users.

Abstract: Many businesses rely on Disaster Recovery (DR) services to prevent either manmade or natural disasters from causing expensive service disruptions. Unfortunately, current DR services come either at very high cost, or with only weak guarantees about the amount of data lost or time required to restart operation after a failure. In this work, we argue that cloud computing platforms are well suited for offering DR as a service due to their pay-as-you-go pricing model that can lower costs, and their use of automated virtual platforms that can minimize the recovery time after a failure. To this end, we perform a pricing analysis to estimate the cost of running a public cloud based DR service and show significant cost reductions compared to using privately owned resources. Further, we explore what additional functionality must be exposed by current cloud platforms and describe what challenges remain in order to minimize cost, data loss, and recovery time in cloud based DR services.

Abstract: We study the typechecking problem for XML transformers: given an XML transformation program and a DTD for the input XML documents, check whether every result of the program conforms to a specified output DTD. We model XML transformers using a novel device called a k-pebble transducer, that can express most queries without data-value joins in XML-QL, XSLT, and other XML query languages. Types are modeled by regular tree languages, a nobust extension of DTDs. The main result of the paper is that typechecking for k-pebble transducers is decidable. Consequently, typechecking can be performed for a broad range of XML transformation languages, including XML-QL and a fragment of XSLT.

Abstract: In this paper we explore the use of end-to-end unicast traffic as measurement probes to infer link-level loss rates. We leverage on of earlier work that produced efficient estimates for link-level loss rates based on end-to-end multicast traffic measurements. We design experiments based on the notion of transmitting stripes of packets (with no delay between transmission of successive packets within a stripe) to two or more receivers. The purpose of these stripes is to ensure that the correlation in receiver observations matches as closely as possible what would have been observed if the stripe had been replaced by a notional multicast probe that followed the same paths to the receivers. Measurements provide good evidence that a packet pair to distinct receivers introduces considerable correlation which can be further increased by simply considering longer stripes. We then use simulation to explore how well these stripes translate into accurate link-level loss estimates. We observe good accuracy with packet pairs, with a typical error of about 1%, which significantly decreases as stripe length is increased to 4 packets.

Abstract: Much work on the performance of Web proxy caching has focused on high-level metrics such as hit rates, but has ignored low level details such as "cookies", aborted connections, and persistent connections between clients and proxies as well as between proxies and servers. These details have a strong impact on performance, particularly in heterogeneous bandwidth environments where network speeds between clients and proxies are significantly different than speeds between proxies and servers. We evaluate through detailed simulations the latency and bandwidth effects of Web proxy caching in such environments. We drive our simulations with packet traces from two scenarios: clients connected through slow dialup modems to a commercial ISP, and clients on a fast LAN in an industrial research lab. We present three main results. First, caching persistent connections at the proxy can improve latency much more than simply caching Web data. Second, aborted connections can waste more bandwidth than that saved by caching data. Third, cookies can dramatically reduce hit rates by making many documents effectively uncacheable.
