TL;DR: In this article, a study of four years' use of journal writing in mathematics involving approximately 500 students in Grades 7 through 11 in a particular Victorian secondary school is presented. But the focus of the discussion is a study that examines one mode of mathematical communication: that of student journal writing and suggests a relationship between students' mathematical writings and their perceptions of mathematics and mathematical activity.
Abstract: This paper examines one mode of mathematical communication: that of student journal writing in mathematics. The focus of the discussion is a study of four years' use of journal writing in mathematics involving approximately 500 students in Grades 7 through 11 in a particular Victorian secondary school. The evaluation of the experimental use in one school of journal writing in mathematics provides a powerful demonstration of the link between language and mathematics and suggests a relationship between students' mathematical writings and their perceptions of mathematics and mathematical activity.

TL;DR: A study of first-year undergraduate students undertaking a course which provides opportunities for role modelling as a means of discovering the knowledge embedded in clinical practice indicated that the major aspect of nursing uncovered by the students through observation of clinical role models was that of provision of direct care.
Abstract: Those responsible for the education of nurses are well aware of the need to reconcile the art and science of nursing so that future practitioners can be prepared to offer a humanistic and professional service to society One way to assist students in this integration is to provide them with opportunities for role modelling as a means of discovering the knowledge embedded in clinical practice A study of first-year undergraduate students undertaking a course which provides such opportunities in a number of practice settings was earned out to determine whether the observation of clinical role models does lead to knowledge discovery The study, which used a grounded theory approach, indicated that the major aspect of nursing uncovered by the students through observation of clinical role models was that of provision of direct care They articulated their values in relation to ‘good’ and ‘bad’ care and identified those attributes of nurses which they considered contributed to these care positions In addition, they were able to recognize creativity and flexibility in practitioners and to relate these attributes to the ability to provide individualized, context-specific care There was some uncovering of aspects of the nurse's role in maintaining their own professional competence, socializing neophytes into the profession and collaborating with the members of the multi-disciplinary health care team

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the underlying determinants of nurses' behaviour regarding the conduct of pain assessments and provided some support for the theory of planned action, as nurses' intention to conduct pain assessment was shown to be predicted by attitude, subjective norms and perceived control.
Abstract: This study examines the underlying determinants of nurses' behaviour regarding the conduct of pain assessments. One hundred nurses in a variety of health care facilities were invited to complete an Attitude Intention Questionnaire based upon the theory of planned action which is an extension of the theory of reasoned action. Results provide some support for the theory of planned action, as nurses' intention to conduct pain assessment was shown to be predicted by attitude, subjective norms and perceived control, although the latter was the only variable to make an independent contribution to intention. Additional support for the importance of perceived control was provided by the analysis of 'intenders' and 'non-intenders' (to conduct pain assessments), as perceived control was the only variable which differed significantly between the groups. The findings are consistent with earlier studies which showed that the variables in the theory of planned behaviour provided reasonably accurate predictions of behavioural intention.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simulation of medication regimen was used to remember to remember, prospective memory, by asking participants to push a button at prescribed times on a small box containing an electronic device that recorded the date and time of each push.
Abstract: Remembering to remember, prospective memory, was investigated by simulation of medication regimen. Subjects were 80 adult volunteers in five age groups: 20s, 40s, 60s, 70s and 80 plus years. Subjects were asked to push a button at prescribed times on a small box containing an electronic device that recorded the date and time of each push. They were required to push the button at the same times over two periods of seven days; once-a-day for one week and four-times-a-day for the other week. There was a significant effect for age, with the older adults more often on time and when late they were closer to the set times than the younger adults. However, the typical age-related decline was found on a retrospective task.

TL;DR: This paper reports on a study which investigated whether nurses from Eastern and Western cultures hold differing definitions of euthanasia and different perspectives of the effect of their attitudes to euthanasia on professional relationships with patients and colleagues.
Abstract: This paper reports on a study which investigated whether nurses from Eastern and Western cultures hold differing definitions of euthanasia and different perspectives of the effect of their attitudes to euthanasia on professional relationships with patients and colleagues. The focus of the study was the lived experience of Chinese and Australian nurses working in palliative care. The results indicate that there were differences between these two groups in their definitions of euthanasia. Lived experience obtained from both groups revealed conflict with patients and colleagues, and a lack of opportunity to discuss the ethical issue of euthanasia in the workplace.

TL;DR: This paper found that attitudes toward parents influence the development of attitudes toward other institutional authorities, and that school children have generally positive attitudes toward such authorities, including parents, the police, the law, and teachers.
Abstract: Previous studies on attitudes toward authority among non-Aboriginal school children in Australia have provided some support for the notion that attitudes toward parents influence the development of attitudes toward other institutional authorities, and that school children have generally positive attitudes toward such authorities. The cross-cultural validity of these propositions was tested with a sample of 46 Australian Aboriginal school children who completed reliable Likert-type scales measuring attitudes toward parents, the police, the law, and teachers. Principal components analysis of the scale scores indicated that, unlike results previously obtained with non-Aboriginal children (Rigby, Schofield, & Slee, 1987), attitude toward parents was factorially distinct from attitudes toward the other authorities. Although the children in the Aboriginal sample were not, as a whole, negatively inclined toward the authorities, they were significantly less positively disposed toward parents and the poli...

TL;DR: This paper found that participation by young people in higher education in Australia did generally become more equitable under Labor during the 1980s, though differences persisted between certain sub-groups of the population.
Abstract: This paper addresses the question of the extent to which there were improvements in equity in the patterns of participation of young people in higher education in Australia during the 1980s. Data from theYouth in Transition longitudinal surveys of Australian youth are used to assess the effectiveness of the Labor Government's equity initiatives since 1983 in this area. The conclusion is that participation by young people in higher education in Australia did generally become more equitable under Labor during the 1980s, though differences in higher education participation rates persisted between certain sub-groups of the population.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether the level of competencies in both a student's first language and in English, the language of schooling, influenced final scores on the external examinations.
Abstract: In Papua New Guinea the three external examinations that primary school students take in their final year are important for their possible entry into the secondary level of the school system. Sixty per cent of students leave the system at this point. This study investigated whether the level of competencies in both a student's first language and in English, the language of schooling, influenced final scores on the external examinations. The results show that indeed there is such an influence. Implications are suggested for both the Papua New Guinea school system and general language theory.

TL;DR: The authors argue that the psychological subject is seen as a false construct, in respect of the goals of pedagogy, and that new objects and methods are opened for doing educational research.
Abstract: In this paper I offer some reflections which arose from attending the 1993 MERGA conference in Brisbane. The reflections are organised around the theme of “understanding the object of educational research.” The intellectual currents set in motion by post-modern thinking are tending to undermine, and show the structural limitations of, psychological studies of learning for advancing the understanding of pedagogy. I contend that once the psychological subject is seen as a false construct, in respect of the goals of pedagogy, then new objects and methods are opened for doing educational research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the context in which this restructuring is occurring, the use of the term "quality assurance" and education in relation to government actions, and expose the nature of this shift.
Abstract: The restructuring of formal education in Australia continues apace. Driven by economic rationalism and reflecting the language, practices and strategies of management in business and industry, this restructuring, we are assured, is going to result in high‐quality education and teacher accountability. In our view, this rhetoric of quality assurance and accountability is being used to mask a deep and fundamental shift in both the focus of education to be provided in Australia and the roles of teachers and teacher educators. To lift this mask and expose the nature of this shift requires an examination of the context in which this restructuring is occurring, the use of the term ‘quality assurance’ and education in relation to government actions.

TL;DR: In this article, a new assessment instrument was developed to assess student perceptions of classroom psychosocial environment in Catholic schools and the use of this instrument in 64 classrooms in Catholic and Government schools indicated significant differences on some scales.
Abstract: Much Catholic school and church rhetoric suggests that Catholic schools possess distinctive learning environments. Research into this aspect of Catholic schooling has been hampered by the lack of an appropriate assessment instrument. By drawing on contemporary church literature, the perceptions of personnel involved in Catholic education and existing classroom environment questionnaires, a new instrument was developed to assess student perceptions of classroom psychosocial environment in Catholic schools. The use of this instrument in 64 classrooms in Catholic and Government schools indicated significant differences on some scales. The distinctive nature of Catholic schooling did not extend to all classroom environment dimensions deemed important to Catholic education.

TL;DR: Sixty preservice teachers participated in a program which allowed them to research one ethnic culture, to spend one day as a participant observer in the life of an ethnic family, and to explore the similarities and differences between cultures and within cultures based on their own experience and the feedback of experts.
Abstract: Sixty preservice teachers participated in a program which allowed them to research one ethnic culture, to spend one day as a participant observer in the life of an ethnic family, and to explore the similarities and differences between cultures and within cultures based on their own experience and the feedback of experts. Students self‐reported quantitative gains in empathy, self‐development, understanding of the relevance of multiculturalism in education and confidence to teach the culturally different. Qualitative change in attitudes indicated a decrease in stereotypic thinking, greater understanding of ethnic parents and children and a willingness to make further contact with people from diverse cultures. Benefits to participating hosts are also discussed.
