TL;DR: Criteria seen as essential to feminist research are the relations between interviewer and interviewee; the intellectual (the researcher) as the bearer of universal values and as truth teller; and the level of critical activism possible in research studies of this nature.
Abstract: This paper identifies criteria seen as essential to feminist research. In light of these criteria, issues which have arisen during our current research on women and their experiences of midlife and menopause are discussed. Issues considered include the researchers' responsibilities to participants when exploring sensitive and highly personal issues relating to participants' life experiences, and less clear cut issues such as knowledge construction, power and control. In relation to the latter the balance of power in the research-participant relationship, and the role and responsibilities of the researcher in knowledge construction, are explored. Foucault's notions of knowledge construction and power and control and the feminist researcher's position, are considered in terms of rigour in feminist research and dissemination of research reports. Issues which are seen as problematic and worthy of further debate are: the relations between interviewer and interviewee; the intellectual (the researcher) as the bearer of universal values and as truth teller; and the level of critical activism possible in research studies of this nature.

TL;DR: The behaviour of bereaved parents with respect to their drug and alcohol ingestion was examined 2 months following the loss of an infant from stillbirth (SB) neonatal death (NND) or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and there was no difference in self‐medication.
Abstract: The behaviour of bereaved parents with respect to their drug and alcohol ingestion was examined 2 months following the loss of an infant from stillbirth (SB) neonatal death (NND) or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Responses from bereaved families (99 SB, 109 NND, 52 SIDS) were compared with 252 control families (who had a liveborn infant). There was no difference in self-medication using aspirin as the example. The use of sedative drugs was significantly higher in all bereaved mothers (but especially the SIDS group). Use of sedatives by fathers was significantly higher only in the SIDS group. There was also a greater frequency of heavy drinking of mothers in all the bereaved groups and fathers in the SIDS group. These results have implications for the understanding and care of families following infant loss.

TL;DR: In this paper, an aspect (student questioning) of a pedagogical model of writing-to-learn is explored, and it is shown that the task of keeping a journal has two salient assessment features: the journals differentiate between students at a particular grade level; and, they show a growth in sophistication over successive years.
Abstract: In this paper an aspect (student questioning) of a pedagogical model of writing-to-learn will be explored. It will be shown that the task of keeping a journal (as defined within the model) has two salient assessment features: The journals differentiate between students at a particular grade level; and, they show a growth in sophistication over successive years. These two features of writing-to-learn recommend its use as a dimension for profiling students' progress in learning mathematics. It will be argued that profiles developed from journal writing enrich the picture of the student as learner.

TL;DR: In this article, survey responses of 125 teacher educators and experienced teachers to fixed-format and open-response items on aspects of mathematics teaching are presented, and a qualitative analysis of responses revealed six major categories.
Abstract: Survey responses of 125 teacher educators and experienced teachers to fixed-format and open-response items on aspects of mathematics teaching are presented. A qualitative analysis of responses revealed six major categories. These were Communicating, Problem Solving, Building Understanding, Engaging, Nurturing and Organising for Learning. Within each of these categories, the frequency of use of particular phrases and descriptors indicate general beliefs about the important characteristics of quality mathematics teaching. There was a great diversity in the language used to describe particular components. A model is proposed which suggests a way in which the categories are linked.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors draw together reflections on two different approaches to ethical decision making and argue that reliance on one style is unsatisfactory, and propose a tentative scheme for integrating sentiment and reason and focusing attention on the particular as well as the general.
Abstract: This article draws together reflections on two different approaches to ethical decision making and argues that reliance on one style is unsatisfactory. The views of Gilligan and several feminist philosophers are used to illustrate the contrasting method and content seen as appropriate to moral reflection. It is claimed that feelings are morally significant and deliberate attention to these may heighten moral sensitivity. A plea for the use of all our capacities in making judgements is made and a tentative scheme for integrating sentiment and reason and focusing attention on the particular as well as the general is outlined.

TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of research mentoring in an institution undergoing significant academic restructuring is presented, where the nature of the project was one in which the mentor/mentee relationship was developed in recognition of the participants being peers but having experienced different academic histories.
Abstract: Mentoring, as an arrangement for academic and professional development in higher education, is a relatively recent innovation. Planned and structured collegial support has been seen to serve two functions, these being of a compensatory and nurturant kind. The case study, reported here, is distinctive in that it discusses research mentoring in an institution undergoing significant academic restructuring. The nature of the project was one in which the mentor/mentees relationship was developed in recognition of the participants being peers but having experienced different academic histories. The process was seen to be a generative one which passed through four stages: initiation; cultivation; separation and redefinition. The study is coauthored by all participants in the process and can be represented as reflexive inquiry as it captures the growing awareness and insightfulness of each person playing out his or her roles. In this sense, then, the paper is a reflective evaluation of the process rather...

TL;DR: The degree to which particular features of word processing as a medium might constitute new and significant impediments to individual writers is explored in relation to discussions held with a number of writers who had expressed concern that their expectations regarding the benefits of wordprocessing were not being fulfilled.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employ narrative methods to give a holistic view of the experiences of five mature age preservice teachers in a semester unit of science education, which was designed to help teachers examine and make explicit their ideas about science and science teaching and consider ways in which they might put those ideas into practice.
Abstract: This study employs narrative methods to give a holistic view of the experiences of five mature age preservice teachers in a semester unit of science education. The unit was designed to help teachers examine and make explicit their ideas about science and science teaching and consider ways in which they might put those ideas into practice. The pivotal theme, around which the teachers' experiences could be organised, was found to be learning science. The preservice teachers expressed a need for a supportive learning environment in which concepts were built gradually and introduced using concrete examples. Previous science experience was found to be a major influence on the attitudes the participants brought to the present course. A lack of previous experience or negative past experiences were a major cause of anxiety. Gender was also important as it had limited the science experiences available to some participants in the past and continued to influence the way they participated in classes during the semester.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors re-analyses data originally gathered as part of a longitudinal study of entrants to teaching in an effort to isolate the conditions which affect the development of a strong professional self-concept.
Abstract: This paper re‐analyses data originally gathered as part of a longitudinal study of entrants to teaching in an effort to isolate the conditions which affect the development of a strong professional self‐concept. Differences were found between primary and secondary student teachers. For primary specialists, teaching practice had become the dominant influence in the development of their conceptions of themselves as teachers. Their academic courses were regarded unfavourably as not helpful in their professional development. Secondary specialists viewed their college courses very favourably as the foundation on which their development as teachers during teaching practice was based. Associate teachers in schools had their greatest influence on self‐concept development when they provided a climate marked by autonomy for the student teacher backed up by support and advice.

TL;DR: A didactic examination posits globalization as marketing globalization as mentioned in this paper, and two areas of opportunity for marketing globalization strategy are a modified marketing strategy for diverse global markets and a standardized marketing strategy in homogeneous global markets.
Abstract: Recent empirical research suggests an appended explanation of globalization is necessary. Significant global studies have indicated that converging global homogeneous markets have not arrived, thereby concluding globalization of markets should be reexamined. A didactic examination posits globalization as marketing globalization. Two areas of opportunity for marketing globalization strategy are a modified marketing strategy in diverse global markets and a standardized marketing strategy in homogeneous global markets. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: Approaches in microteaching traditionally have been focused upon the teaching of specific skills in small‐group situations. This article describes the application of a form of microteaching to the acquisition of teaching strategies, which has a much broader focus, based largely on the work of Joyce & Weil (1986).

TL;DR: In this article, a model of environmental marketing action and success is proposed, which includes a range of variables and examines the relationship between them, concluding that environmental success is partly determined by the level of Environmental Marketing Action which varies between level 0 and level 8.
Abstract: A model of environmental marketing action and success is proposed, which includes a range of variables and examines the relationship between them. Environmental success is partly determined by the level of Environmental Marketing Action which varies between level 0 and level 8 and which directly determines the extent of environmental marketing success. Perceptions of environmental consciousness, the subjective norm and net total risk determine the level of environmental marketing action. Beliefs with regard to stakeholders and events and the motivation to comply with these beliefs combine to form the subjective norm.
