TL;DR: In this paper, the glass-forming ability of a Se0.615Ge0.154Sb0.231 alloy is analyzed by computing the critical cooling rate and the time-temperature-transformation curve, at various temperatures.
Abstract: The glass-forming ability of a Se0.615Ge0.154Sb0.231 alloy is analysed by computing the critical cooling rate and the time-temperature-transformation curve, at various temperatures. The calculation is based on some experimentally determined portions of the time-temperature-transformation curve, from which the rate of increase of viscosity with falling temperature below the melting point is deduced, using classical crystallization kinetics treatment.

TL;DR: The method described illustrates the feasibility of assaying biogenic indoleamines and acidic metabolites, as well as their precursor amino acid on a single fraction in contrast to other standard fractionation methods.
Abstract: Endogenous tryptamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, indoleacetic acid, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic and tryptophan have been recovered from urine and cerebro-spinal fluid by adsorption on XAD-2 resin (0.3 g). After adsorption of the sample on the resin, desorption with methanol provides a single fraction that contains all of these metabolites. The mass spectra of their pentafluoropropionyl derivatives show prominent ions at m/e 276 and 438 which are characteristic of indoles and 5-hydroxyindoles, respectively, a feature that allows the concurrent determination of all the components of each group by functional group analysis. A method has been developed to carry out single ion monitoring with the peak matching system of an Hitachi RMU-6H mass spectrometer. Identifications are based on the respective Kovats Indices and single ion monitoring of two characteristic ions per compound: tryptophan (m/e 276 and 347); tryptamine (m/e 276 and 289); indoleacetic acid (m/e 276 and 335); 5-hydroxytryptamine (m/e 438 and 451); 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (m/e 438 and 497). The method described illustrates the feasibility of assaying biogenic indoleamines and acidic metabolites, as well as their precursor amino acid on a single fraction in contrast to other standard fractionation methods. This is possible even if the mass spectrometer is not equipped with an alternating voltage accelerator provided that it has a peak matcher, although the lack of an alternating voltage accelerator requires two separate injections of the same sample, for quantification and identification; one for the indole profile and another for the 5-hydroxyindole profile. Both profiles can be verified by individual monitoring of the other confirmatory ions. With this method the use of a multiple ion detector would allow a simultaneous determination of all of these metabolites in one gas chromatograph mass spectrometer run.

TL;DR: The brain enzyme differs from the corresponding enzyme in peripheral tissues in the inability to achieve a total inhibition of activity by dialysis, and the properties correspond to those of a ‘specific’ histidine decarboxylase.
Abstract: – The properties of histidine decarboxylase (l-histidine carboxylyase EC 4.1,1.22) have been studied in a whole rat brain homogenate. Optimum pH depended upon substrate concentration; the variations of Km and Vmax were determined as a function of pH. pH values lower than 6.0 caused a loss of enzymic activity; activity was stable at pH values higher than 6.0. Enzyme activity was proportional to temperature in the range 30-45°C; temperature characteristic (μ) and Q10 were determined and thermal inactivation was studied. Addition of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate increased enzyme activity. Dialysis of homogenates against phosphate buffer caused a partial loss of enzyme activity which could be restored by addition of the coenzyme to the incubation mixture. Enzyme activity was inhibited by α-methylhistidine and benzene and was unaffected by α-methyl DOPA. The properties correspond to those of a ‘specific’ histidine decarboxylase. However, the brain enzyme differs from the corresponding enzyme in peripheral tissues in the inability to achieve a total inhibition of activity by dialysis.

TL;DR: The metabolism of orally administered procainamide has been studied in fast and slow acetylators of sulphadimidine, with no difference between the two groups in totaln-acetyl-p-aminobenzoic acid was detected, the percentages ofn- acetyl-PABA being distributed unimodally.
Abstract: The metabolism of orally administered procainamide has been studied in fast and slow acetylators of sulphadimidine. Although the overall excretion in 6 hours of procainamide and its metabolites was similar in both groups, the excretion ofn-acetylprocainamide by the fast acetylator group was much higher (40.9 mg vs 14.9 mg); individual values showed a bimodal distribution. In contrast, no difference between the two groups in totaln-acetyl-p-aminobenzoic acid was detected, the percentages ofn-acetyl-PABA being distributed unimodally. The plasma half-life of procainamide was shorter in the fast acetylator group (2.2 hr vs 3.9 hr).

TL;DR: In the patients with good immune response, the disease was limited, responding with greater frequency to therapy and presenting a higher rate of survival, Consequently, the immunologic study of a neoplastic patient can guide us toward a therapeutic behavior and a prognosis.
Abstract: The cellular immunity has been studied in 121 patients by solid nonlymphoid tumors, and in 50 healthy patients, 11 with benign tumors, with the use of techniques of in vivo dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and in vitro lymphocyte response to phytohemagglutinin to observe the correlation between both tests and the clinical stage of the disease, the response to chemotherapy and surgery, prognosis, and survival. Patients with anergy presented tumoral irresectability, lack of response to chemotherapy, advanced disease, and limited survival. In the patients with good immune response, the disease was limited, responding with greater frequency to therapy and presenting a higher rate of survival. Consequently, the immunologic study of a neoplastic patient can guide us toward a therapeutic behavior and a prognosis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Glansdorff-Prigogine self consistent method is applied to steady and non-steady stagnation flows; the plane and the axisymmetrical cases are considered.
Abstract: Recently, Lebon and Lambermont proposed a general variational principle for fluid mechanics. In this paper, the criterion is applied to steady and non-steady stagnation flows; the plane and the axisymmetrical cases are considered. By using Glansdorff-Prigogine self consistent method, approximate analytic solutions are derived. It is shown that the steady solution is rather quickly reached. For this latter case, the present solutions are compared with previous ones obtained by direct integration of the Navier-Stokes equations.

TL;DR: In this article, the contribution of the nuclear reactions α+C, N, O, Ne to the galactic abundances of Li, Be and B is estimated by assuming constancy of the interstellar density and of the intensity of cosmic radiation.
Abstract: The contribution of the nuclear reactions α+C, N, O, Ne to the galactic abundances of Li, Be and B is estimated. Experimental values of production cross-sections and systematic considerations of the general trend of the excitation functions are used to evaluate the present production. The contribution to abundances since the origin of the Galaxy is calculated by assuming constancy of the interstellar density and of the intensity of cosmic radiation. This contribution is compared with recent observed values.
