Abstract: HISTAMINE (HA) is now believed to be a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammals (for a review see SNYDER & TAYLOR, 1972; SCHWARTZ, 1975). In adult rat brain, although HA has been found to be concentrated in fractions enriched in synaptosomes (CARLINI & GREEN, 1963; MICHAELSON & COFFMAN, 1967; KATAOKA & DE ROBERTIS, 1967; KUHAR et al., 1971b; SNYDER et al., 1974), around 30% of the amine has been reported to be present in the crude nuclear fraction (SCHWARTZ, 1975) in contrast to the low amounts of other neurotransmitters found in that fraction (DE ROBERTIS et al., 1962; KUHAR et al., 1971a; COYLE & KUHAR, 1974). If brain HA is only considered a neurotransmitter, its ontogenic development in rat brain would seem anomalous since HA levels are found to be 5-6 times higher in the 5-day-old rat brain than in the adult brain (PEARCE & SCHANBERG, 1969; RONNBERG & SCHWARTZ, ~ ~ ~ ~ ; T I L L E M E N T et al., 1971). This pattern differs markedly from that described for other neurotransmitters (ABDEL-LATIF et al., 1970; COYLE & AXELROD, 1971; TISARI & RAUNU, 1975) whose development with age parallels synaptogenesis (AGHAJANIAN & BLOOM, 1967). In contrast, the development of L-histidine decarboxylase activity (HD), the HA synthesizing enzyme, follows a pattern (SCHWARTZ et al., 1971) similar to that described for other neurotransmitter synthesizing enzymes (SCHMIDT & SANDERS-BUSH, 1971 ; COYLE & AXELROD, 1972). During the first week of postnatal life, rat brain H D activity is very low increasing later to reach adult values during the fourth week. The discrepancies between the developmental patterns of HA and HD activity suggested the presence of a pool of brain HA other than the synaptosomal one. In the neonatal rat brain, HA has been found to be concentrated in the crude nuclear fraction (YOUNG et al., 1971). These findings could be related to the recently reported presence of mast cells, known to be rich in HA and poor in H D activity (SCHAYER, 1966), in rat brain (IBRAHIM, 1974; KRUGER, 1974; DROPP, 1976). In the present work we compare the subcellular distribution of HA in neonatal and adult rat brain with that of peritoneal mast cells homogenized together with brain tissue.

Abstract: The plasma protein binding of a representative acidic drug, salicylate, and a representative basic drug, quinidine, has been studied in patients with several diseases that are sometimes associated with uraemia or a change in serum albumin level. Decreased plasma protein binding of salicylate was observed in plasma from patients with uraemia and liver disease. Low albumin levels in these patients could only account in part for the decreased binding. On the other hand, salicylate binding to plasma proteins appeared to be increased in patients with hypoxia. Decreased plasma protein binding of quinidine was observed in some patients with uraemia and in the majority of patients with liver disease.

Abstract: The kinetics of bulk crystallization of Se61.5Ge15 4Sb23.1 glasses was investigated from their thermal behaviour. In the thermal characterization of a glass the recrystallization temperature is highly dependent on both the rate of heating and the thermal history of the glass. Vitreous samples were prepared by quenching. From ratedependent curves it was found that the recrystallization process obeys first-order kinetics with an apparent activation enthalpy of 48±5 kcal/mole. Further analysis allows determination of both the activation enthalpy,H=90±4 kcal/mole, and the kinetic exponent of the Avrami equation,n=1.9±0.3.

Abstract: A survey of medical students was conducted at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in 1974. Out of 1029 students, 808 present at lectures (78.5%) returned properly completed questionnaires. These showed that mean caffeine consumption was 8.3 g per month and increased with the length of stay at the university. Tobacco consumption (general mean, 190 cigarettes per month, 216 for males and 150 for females) and alcohol consumption (8.8 litres/year for males and 4.1 litres/year for females) also increased with time spent at university. Alcohol consumption was not as high as in the general population. Amphetamine consumption was very high (22% of students had taken amphetamines on more than one occasion in the six months prior to the survey). Marihuana and hashish were by far the most commonly used drugs (9.6%), the use of these drugs being much less common than at other European universities. The use of “harder” drugs was very limited. Appraisal of alcohol, tobacco and amphetamine abuse is necessary, since the authorities have not employed adequate measures to stop or limit them.

Abstract: The reaction of prostaglandins E1, E2, A1 and A2 with a 1:1 mixture of N,O-bis-trimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide and piperidine favours the quantitative enolization of the 9-keto group of prostaglandins E, thus giving the corresponding tetrakis-TMS derivatives with molecular ions at m/e 642 and m/e 640 for prostaglandins E1 and E2, respectively, and also gives a new type of prostaglandin A-piperidyl-TMS derivative characterized by very strong base peaks at m/e 464 and 462, with molecular ions at m/e 637 and 635 for prostaglandins A1 and A2, respectively. The probable reaction mechanisms prevailing in both cases are discussed in accordance with the low and high resolution mass spectral data presented.

Abstract: In neonatal rat bra in histamine (HT) levels are much higher than in adult ra t brain. Brain H T levels decrease during the 2nd and the 3rd week reaching adult values during the 4th week o f postnatal life [1]. This pat tern differs f rom that described for other biogenic amines in brain [2]. In neonatal rat brain most o f the HT is localized in the 'c rude nuclear fraction' , while in adult brain, HT is mainly localized in fractions enriched in ' synap tosomes ' [3]. Rat brain HT levels during the three first weeks o f pos tnata l life reflect almost exclusively the evolution o f H T levels in P1YOUNG et al [4] suggest that neonatal rat brain H T in P1 may p lay a role as regulator o f nucleic acid function. Recently, the presence o f mast cells in rat brain has been repor ted [5]. The number o f these cells seems to be higher in neonatal rat brain than in adult ra t brain. In the present work we describe the presence o f a pool o f H T stored in mast cells in the rat brain.

Abstract: El desenvolupament del turisme a la Costa Brava i el fenomen d'urbanitzacio que suposA. — Descoberta pel turisma els anys 1930, la Costa Brava no ha estât explotada sistematicament fins l'any 1955 sigui per satisfer el turisme internacional (clients individuals o grans masses manipulades per les empresses comerciais) sigui per a crear residencies secundaries cercades per la burgesia barcelonina. En esdevenir el sol una riqueza especulativa l'economia regional ha quedat dominada pel mercat turistic. Pero aqueste transformado que no esta planificada a escala regional ha dut a malgastar recursos : els autors ho demqstren precisament en relacio amb els plans parcials de vivendes en estudi que podrien aplegar mes de 500 000 habitants, mes que la poblacio de la provincia de Girona. L'analisis s'esten a una escala superior per recordar que les vivendes turistiques suposen un ordre urba sensa implicar la creacio de ciutats.

Abstract: 2014 In the study of glassy semiconductors properties, there is an important difficulty arising from their metastable character. Thus the knowledge and control of the preparation method is essential, because the properties of the obtained solid may change drastically with their thermal history. In the present work the glass-forming region of the Se-Te-Ge0.5Sb0.5 system for different quenching conditions (cooling rates beetwen 10-3 °C/s and 102 °C/s) is reported, and the critical cooling rates for various compositions are determined. The limitations of the DTA method are shown when comparing, for a fixed composition, the influence of heating rate on the thermograms, and the continuity of variation of the thermograms with composition, for a fixed heating rate. This work allows also to get some insight both on crystallization kinetics and on the continuous variation of the physical properties with composition.
