Abstract: Several different aspects of the subtalar joint are studied. Embryology indicates that it is a recently acquired structure. The anterior subtalar joint does not have a uniform morphology, and it has been subdivided into three anatomical descriptions (ovoid, bean, and two part). To correct the confusion found in other papers, we intend to clearly describe the anatomy of the ligaments. The form and function of the retinacula, cervical ligament, and ligament of the canal are studied. The microscopic anatomy of ligaments is studied, dealing specifically with their innervation and the structure of their fibers.

Abstract: The glass formation and crystallization of liquid-quenched (GeSe2)100-y

alloys was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and optical and scanning electron microscopy. By water quenching glasses are obtained from compositions in the range 5≲y≲30. Qualitative parametrization of glass-forming tendency gives, as best glass formers, alloys with y≅20. Crystallization on heating proceeds in one stage for glasses withy≲20 and in two stages for those with greater Sb2Te3 content. For compositions lying in the GeSe2 primary crystallization region crystals appear preferentially at the surface of the sample, but for the other compositions (24≲y≲30) the crystals emerge in the bulk and often develop in spherulitic or axialitic form.

Abstract: A theory of macroscopic systems which takes as independent variables the slow (conserved) ones plus the fast dissipative fluxes is carefully analyzed at three levels of description: macroscopic (thermodynamic), microscopic (projection operators) and mesoscopic (fluctuation theory). Such a description is compared with the memory function approach based only on the conserved variables. We find that the first theory is richer and wider than the second one, and some misunderstandings in this connection are clarified and discussed.

Sin embargo, mientras que la problematica de concentracion de empresas, de la acumulacion de poder economico a traves de la creciente dimension de las grandes unidades economico-financieras y de la proliferacion de multinacionales ha atraido el interes de politicos, empresarios y cientificos, al tema de la creacion de nuevas empresas, que viene a constituir la otra cara de la moneda, no se le ha atribuido en Espana, salvo excepciones la importancia que tiene. Abstract: Average specific density of individual cells of pure cultures of Chromatium warmingii and Chromatium vinosum were measured by isopicnic gradient centrifugation with Percoll during growth at constant illumination as a function of the increasing content of intracellular sulfur. Cell number and volume, bacteriochlorophyll a, sulfide, and sulfur were followed in the cultures along with cellular buoyant density. Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate was monitored at several points during growth of the cultures. The density of C. warmingii changed from 1.071 to 1.108 g cm-3 (sulfur content per cell varied from 0 to 1.71pg). C. vinosum changed its density from 1.096 to 1.160 g cm-3 (sulfur content per cell varied from 0 to 0.43 pg). Maximum sulfur content in pg of sulfur per μm3 of cell volume were 0.178 for C. warmingii and 0.294 for C. vinosum. Measurement of the differences in buoyant density, volume and sulfur content before and after ethanol extraction of cells with and without intracellular sulfur, allowed tentatively to estimate the density of sulfur inside the cells as 1.219 g cm-3. Isolation of sulfur globules and centrifugation in density gradients gave a density higher than 1.143 g cm-3 for these intracellular inclusions.

Abstract: Correlates of ant nectarivory have been investigated in a sample of 75 insect-pollinated, nectar-producing southern Spanish plant species. Ants exploit floral nectar opportunistically. Variation among plant species in sugar secretion rates and flower location relative to ground level do not influence either the chances of ant visitation or the identity of ant species involved. Mechanical restrictions on nectar accessibility (tubular corollas, occlusive structures) decrease nectar thievery, Some evolutionary trends in floral morphology usually related to a decrease in the range of effective pollinators alone may simultaneously be interpreted in terms of increased plant adaptedness to exclude non-pollinating insect nectarivores.

Abstract: Androgen metabolism by human epiphyseal cartilage and chondrocytes in primary culture was studied during fetal life. Testosterone (T) and androstendione (Δ4) were incubated with epiphyseal cartilage and with chondrocytes in Dulbecco's medium for 4, 12, and 24 h. Androstanedione, Δ4, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and androstanediol were separated by bidimensional thin layer chromatography and Δ4, DHT, and T recrystallized in five different solvent systems. The results showed that Δ4 was transformed into androstanedione, DHT, and T whereas T was metabolized into Δ4 and 5α-reduced androgens. In both systems (epiphyseal cartilage and chondrocytes) Δ4 was the principal metabolite produced from T. There were no major differences in the metabolic patterns of Δ4 and T between epiphyseal cartilage and chondrocytes according to sex nor gestational age (11–32 weeks). In conclusion, 5α-reductase activity was found in chondrocytes from human fetuses of both sexes, but T was mainly transformed into Δ4.

Abstract: We describe the results of synaptonemal complex (SCs) studies by light (LM) and electron microscopy (EM) in a sterile 46,XY/47,XXY male mosaic. Meiotic studies showed an arrest at the first spermatocyte level. Pachytene figures showed three types of cells: (1) cells with normal SCs, normal sex vesicle, and a 23,XY constitution; (2) cells with no sex vesicle, normal pairing of SCs, and a 24, (?) constitution; and (3) cells with a normal sex vesicle and fragmented SCs.

Abstract: Meiotic and synaptonemal complex studies by light and electron microscopy have been carried out in two infertile males with a balanced 13/14 translocation. As expected, all metaphase I figures in conventional meiotic preparations contained a chain trivalent. Synaptonemal complex studies showed typical trivalent images with incomplete pairing of the acrocentric elements in the cis configuration. A review of the literature shows that the fertility of these patients is quite variable. All of them show a slightly reduced number of chiasmata (mean 46.6). Pairing in cis, as detected by electron microscopic studies, does not seem to have a prognostic value.
