Abstract: Nanostructured CoFe2O4 particles were prepared by a sonochemical approach, first by preparation of the amorphous precursor powders, followed by heat treatment at relatively very low temperatures. The precursor was prepared by sonochemical decomposition of solutions of volatile organic precursors, Fe(CO)5 and Co(NO)(CO)3, in Decalin at 273 K, under an oxygen pressure of 100−150 kPa. The amorphous nature of these particles was confirmed by various techniques, such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), electron microdiffraction, and X-ray diffractograms. Magnetic measurements, Mossbauer, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectral studies indicated that the as-prepared amorphous particles were superparamagnetic. The Mossbauer parameters and the significantly low (45 emu/g) observed saturation of magnetization of the annealed sample, compared to that of the bulk sample (72 emu/g), reflected its nanocrystalline nature.

Abstract: Three studies examined the association between adult attachment and anger. Study 1 examined attachment-style differences in self-reports of anger-proneness, anger expression, anger goals, and responses to anger. Study 2 assessed attachment style, physiological signs of anger, and attribution of hostile intent. Study 3 used a lexical-decision task for studying attachment-style differences in expected anger outcome. Secure persons scored lower in anger-proneness, endorsed more constructive anger goals, reported more adaptive responses and more positive affect in anger episodes, attributed less hostile intent to others, and expected more positive outcomes than insecure persons. For ambivalent persons, the anger experience also included lack of anger control and anger-in. For avoidant persons, it included high hostility, escapist responses, and lack of awareness of physiological signs of anger. The underlying action of working models is emphasized in the discussion.

Abstract: Normal mitochondrial function is a critical factor in maintaining cellular homeostasis in various organs of the body. Due to the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in many pathological states, the real-time in vivo monitoring of the mitochondrial metabolic state is crucially important. This type of monitoring in animal models as well as in patients provides real-time data that can help interpret experimental results or optimize patient treatment. The goals of the present review are the following: 1) to provide an historical overview of NADH fluorescence monitoring and its physiological significance; 2) to present the solid scientific ground underlying NADH fluorescence measurements based on published materials; 3) to provide the reader with basic information on the methodologies used in the past and the current state of the art fluorometers; and 4) to clarify the various factors affecting monitored signals, including artifacts. The large numbers of publications by different groups testify to the valuable information gathered in various experimental conditions. The monitoring of NADH levels in the tissue provides the most important information on the metabolic state of the mitochondria in terms of energy production and intracellular oxygen levels. Although NADH signals are not calibrated in absolute units, their trend monitoring is important for the interpretation of physiological or pathological situations. To understand tissue function better, the multiparametric approach has been developed where NADH serves as the key parameter. The development of new light sources in UV and visible spectra has led to the development of small compact units applicable in clinical conditions for better diagnosis of patients.

Abstract: Li and Mn-rich layered cathodes, despite their high specific capacity, suffer from capacity fading and discharge voltage decay upon cycling. Both specific capacity and discharge voltage of Li and Mn-rich cathodes are stabilized upon cycling by optimized Al doping. Doping Li and Mn-rich cathode materials Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.56Co0.08O2 by Al on the account of manganese (as reflected by their stoichiometry) results in a decrease in their specific capacity but increases pronouncedly their stability upon cycling. Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.51Al0.05Co0.08O2 exhibits 96% capacity retention as compared to 68% capacity retention for Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.56Co0.08O2 after 100 cycles. This doping also reduces the decrease in the average discharge voltage upon cycling, which is the longstanding fatal drawback of these Li and Mn-rich cathode materials. The electrochemical impedance study indicates that doping by Al has a surface stabilization effect on these cathode materials. The structural analysis of cycled electrodes by Raman spectroscopy suggests that Al doping also has a bulk stabilizing effect on the layered LiMO2 phase resulting in the better electrochemical performance of Al doped cathode materials as compared to the undoped counterpart. Results from a prolonged systematic work on these cathode materials are presented and the best results that have ever been obtained are reported.
