Abstract: The stomach of the freshwater snakehead murrel, Channa striata (n = 250) collected from fresh water habitats of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India revealed Allogenarchopsis, a trematode parasite (Plagiorchiida: Derogenidae). An illustrated account of light (Olympus BX-53 with Cellsens software imaging system) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Neo JCM-6000) of Allogenarchopsis bareilliensis n. sp. (prevalence 37 %, intensity 1–4 par/host) is provided. Light microscopy based studies warranting creation of a new species are the robust shape of the body with broad mid-body, blunt anterior and tapering posterior end, large ventral sucker, ratio of oral sucker: ventral sucker 1:3.5, pharynx broader than long, egg size small with relatively short egg filament, excretory vesicle U-shaped bifurcating at posterior end and terminating above intestinal shoulders. Key characteristics of the tegumental microtopography by SEM are (1) an aspinous tegument with a variety of papillae of different shapes (button-like, dome-shaped) distributed randomly on the dorsal and ventral surface (2) oral sucker and oral cavity muscular with fringed margins and morphologically different oral papillae (3) lip of ventral sucker papillated including two unequally spaced rows of papillae with sensory receptacles interspersed in between, (4) unique differentially texturized cytoplasmic processes on the ventral sucker and (5) body folds grooved, gradually becoming narrower towards posterior end. This is the first record and study on Allogenarchopsis from Channa of Rohilkhand, India using electron optics. We recommend that the newly recognized morphological features as revealed by light microscopy and SEM be utilized as taxonomic tools in future for the identification of the species.

Abstract: With the aim to obtain information about atmospheric deposition of metals all over the western Himalayas (Kumaon region) using moss as bioaccumulator, a biomonitoring program was setup by financial aid of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Present study is a part of the same monitoring program. The moss Racomitrium crispulum was sampled from 24 localities of Nainital of the Kumaon Hills to indicate relative level of four metals: Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd. In summation of undertaken metals the highest 70% concentration of metals was observed in centre of the city. A gradient of decrease in metal was recorded while projecting away from city centre (zero km). A trend of metal precipitation was observed amongst seasons, viz. summer > winter > monsoon. The accumulation level of metals in the moss also varies amongst themselves, i.e. Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd. Abstract: Bryophytes, the shade loving plants, have tremendous medicinal properties. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv. were analysed for antimicrobial properties against the fungi Aspergillus fumigatus and Fusarium oxysporum and the bacteria Escherichia coli, Bacillus mycoides, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi. The study is an attempt to investigate the medicinal properties of Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv. using disc-diffusion method. No inhibition was observed against A. fumigatus and P. mirabilis. For bacteria S. typhi and E. coli (20 and 15 mm), aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Atrichum showed significant inhibition. However, alcoholic extract was found remarkably effective against bacteria rather than aqueous extract.

Abstract: Study of the bryoflora of the Western Himalayas revealed for the first time the presence of the moss taxon Rhynchostegiella divaricatifolia from the Kumaon region. Earlier this moss was known from the eastern part of the country, i.e. Darjeeling (Sikkim), and was considered unique to that region. The present study describes the extended range of distribution from the Eastern Himalayan to the Kumaon hills of India in an area of 21,035 km(2). Rhynchostegiella divaricatifolia is characterised by a twisted half turn leaf apex, leaf cells showing irregular primordial utricle, linear, irregularly rhomboid. The moss plants are soft, large, glossy, and yellow-green in lax tufts.
