TL;DR: In this paper, small changes in coda wave propagation can be determined by cross-correlating time windows, time-stretched signals, or frequency-stretched spectra, assuming homogeneous velocity change throughout the medium, propagation modes (P, S) that are equally affected by the process and the preservation of VP/VS ratio during the process.
Abstract: Small-strain elastic wave propagation is a constant-fabric phenomenon ideally suited to monitor processes in soils. However, the determination of very small changes in travel time limits our ability to resolve changes in soil stiffness caused by internal processes or changes in boundary conditions. The first-arrival reflects the fastest path between the source and receiver of the propagating wave field; later arrivals in the coda correspond to longer paths after multiple boundary reflections and internal scattering. Therefore, time shifts between the codas of two consecutive signals are longer and easier to detect than between the signals’ first arrivals. Slight changes in coda waves can be determined by cross-correlating time windows, time-stretched signals, or frequency-stretched spectra. Basic coda analysis assumes a homogeneous velocity change throughout the medium, propagation modes (P, S) that are equally affected by the process and the preservation of VP/VS ratio during the process. The res...

TL;DR: The entrepreneurial city is characterized by enforced economic interventions and the growing support of entrepreneurial initiatives as well as local specific city marketing (Mayer 1990, Hall/Hubbard 1998) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Following earlier stages of extensive and intensive urbanization, cities are now responding to processes of de-, reand neo-urbanization, the decline of population and workplaces in the inner city and world wide economic restructuring. The transition from industrial to service economies, the internationalization of capital, the opening of the world market and national boundaries have contributed to an intensified competition among cities. Urban politics react to globalization and competition with new types of local activity. The entrepreneurial city is characterized by enforced economic interventions and the growing support of entrepreneurial initiatives as well as local specific city marketing (Mayer 1990, Hall/Hubbard 1998). This means that cities can no longer perceive themselves as extensions of the nation state or as executive administrations but as 'actors, promoters and managers' of themselves (Dangschat 1995: 53). Typical of this new type of urban politics are the stronger participation of more and more non-state actors, cooperative and horizontal political styles as well as negotiating and decisionmaking processes outside of traditional structures (Mayer 1990). Furthermore, postfordist urban politics are characterized by the fact that less resources are provided for social services and that the

01 Jul 2019TL;DR: It is concluded that the underlying experiment design cannot guarantee pushing forward the state of the art, and a “Basic and Fairly Flawed” (BAFF) authorship verifier is presented that allows for top benchmarking with a surprisingly straightforward approach.
Abstract: The PAN series of shared tasks is well known for its continuous and high quality research in the field of digital text forensics. Among others, PAN contributions include original corpora, tailored benchmarks, and standardized experimentation platforms. In this paper we review, theoretically and practically, the authorship verification task and conclude that the underlying experiment design cannot guarantee pushing forward the state of the art—in fact, it allows for top benchmarking with a surprisingly straightforward approach. In this regard, we present a “Basic and Fairly Flawed” (BAFF) authorship verifier that is on a par with the best approaches submitted so far, and that illustrates sources of bias that should be eliminated. We pinpoint these sources in the evaluation chain and present a refined authorship corpus as effective countermeasure.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focused on the determination of optimal reference sensor positions assuming random excitations within a weakly stationary process and used a genetic algorithm to avoid the assessment of all possible combinations of sensor positions.

TL;DR: In this article, the free and forced vibration behavior of a sandwich beam with functionally graded porous core and composite face layers embedded with shape memory alloy (SMA) was investigated, and the analytical solution was presented to solve the equations of motion using Navier's solution.
Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the free and forced vibration behavior of a sandwich beam with functionally graded porous core and composite face layers embedded with shape memory alloy (SMA). Three different porosity patterns are assumed through the thickness direction of the core, and composite face layers are reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT). The sandwich beam is resting on an elastic foundation which is simulated by Vlasov’s model. By using Hamilton’s principle and first-order shear deformation theory, the governing equations of motion are derived. The analytical solution is presented to solve the equations of motion using Navier’s solution. Results are verified with corresponding literatures. Finally, the effects of important parameters such as temperature, volume fraction of SMA, porosity distribution, weight fraction of CNT, and geometric parameters are explored in detail.
