TL;DR: In this paper, a review comprehensively summarizes the research effort on the electrode material optimization (e.g., crystals, morphology, reaction mechanisms, and interface control), the synthesis methods, and the full cell fabrication for PIBs to enhance the electrochemical potassium storage and provide a platform for further development in this battery system.
Abstract: The limited resources and uneven distribution of lithium stimulate strong motivation to develop new rechargeable batteries that use alternative charge carriers. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are at the top of the list of alternatives because of the abundant raw materials and relatively high energy density, fast ion transport kinetics in the electrolyte, and low cost. However, several challenges still hinder the development of PIBs, such as low reversible capacity, poor rate performance, and inferior cycling stability. Research on the cathode is currently focused on developing materials with high energy density and cycling stability, mainly including layered transition metal oxides, polyanion compounds, organic compounds, etc. Anodes based on intercalation reactions, conversion reactions, and alloying with potassium are currently under development, and promising results have been published. This review comprehensively summarizes the research effort to date on the electrode material optimization (e.g., crystals, morphology, reaction mechanisms, and interface control), the synthesis methods, and the full cell fabrication for PIBs to enhance the electrochemical potassium storage and provide a platform for further development in this battery system.

TL;DR: It is shown that conjugated p-orbital interactions, common to most carbon allotropes, can in principle produce a new type of topological band structure, forming the so-called Weyl-like semimetal in the absence of SOC.
Abstract: Carbon allotropes are subject of intense investigations for their superb structural, electronic, and chemical properties, but not for topological band properties because of the lack of strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we show that conjugated p-orbital interactions, common to most carbon allotropes, can in principle produce a new type of topological band structure, forming the so-called Weyl-like semimetal in the absence of SOC. Taking a structurally stable interpenetrated graphene network (IGN) as example, we show, by first-principles calculations and tight-binding modeling, that its Fermi surface is made of two symmetry-protected Weyl-like loops with linear dispersion along perpendicular directions. These loops are reduced to Weyl-like points upon breaking of the inversion symmetry. Because of the topological properties of these band-structure anomalies, remarkably, at a surface terminated by vacuum there emerges a flat band in the loop case and two Fermi arcs in the point case. These topological ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a high ZT ∼ 1.4 in textured Bi0.875Ba0.125CuSeO obtained by a hot-forging process.
Abstract: We present a high ZT ∼ 1.4 in textured Bi0.875Ba0.125CuSeO obtained by a hot-forging process. The carrier mobility along the direction perpendicular to the pressing direction was significantly increased, resulting in increase in the electrical conductivity and maximization of the power factor at 923 K from 6.3 μW cm−1 K−2 for the sample before hot-forging to 8.1 μW cm−1 K−2 after the hot-forging process. Therefore, the maximum ZT was significantly increased from ∼1.1 to 1.4 through texturing for Bi0.875Ba0.125CuSeO, which is the highest ZT ever reported among oxygen containing materials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors unraveled strain engineered phosphorene as a photocatalyst in the application of water splitting hydrogen production based on density functional theory calculations and demonstrated the stability for such kind of artificial materials under different strains.
Abstract: Phosphorene has attracted intense interest due to its unexpected high carrier mobility and distinguished anisotropic optoelectronic and electronic properties. In this work, we unraveled strain engineered phosphorene as a photocatalyst in the application of water splitting hydrogen production based on density functional theory calculations. Lattice dynamic calculations demonstrated the stability for such kind of artificial materials under different strains. The phosphorene lattice is unstable under compression strains and could be crashed, whereas phosphorene lattice shows very good stability under tensile strains. Further guarantee of the stability of phosphorene in liquid water is studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Tunable band gap from 1.54 eV at ambient condition to 1.82 eV under tensile strains for phosphorene is evaluated using parameter-free hybrid functional calculations. Appropriate band gaps and band edge alignments at certain pH demonstrate the potential application of phosphor...

TL;DR: A miniaturized bio-optoelectronic implant using an optical stimulation interface that exploits microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes to activate opsins and a soft, high-precision biophysical sensor system that allows continuous measurements of organ function is introduced.
Abstract: The fast-growing field of bioelectronic medicine aims to develop engineered systems that can relieve clinical conditions by stimulating the peripheral nervous system1–5. This type of technology relies largely on electrical stimulation to provide neuromodulation of organ function or pain. One example is sacral nerve stimulation to treat overactive bladder, urinary incontinence and interstitial cystitis (also known as bladder pain syndrome)4,6,7. Conventional, continuous stimulation protocols, however, can cause discomfort and pain, particularly when treating symptoms that can be intermittent (for example, sudden urinary urgency)8. Direct physical coupling of electrodes to the nerve can lead to injury and inflammation9–11. Furthermore, typical therapeutic stimulators target large nerve bundles that innervate multiple structures, resulting in a lack of organ specificity. Here we introduce a miniaturized bio-optoelectronic implant that avoids these limitations by using (1) an optical stimulation interface that exploits microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes to activate opsins; (2) a soft, high-precision biophysical sensor system that allows continuous measurements of organ function; and (3) a control module and data analytics approach that enables coordinated, closed-loop operation of the system to eliminate pathological behaviours as they occur in real-time. In the example reported here, a soft strain gauge yields real-time information on bladder function in a rat model. Data algorithms identify pathological behaviour, and automated, closed-loop optogenetic neuromodulation of bladder sensory afferents normalizes bladder function. This all-optical scheme for neuromodulation offers chronic stability and the potential to stimulate specific cell types. A closed-loop implantable bioelectronic device that can modulate peripheral neuronal activity is used to improve bladder function in a rat model of cystitis.
