TL;DR: A superposed linear representation classifier (SLRC) is developed to cast the recognition problem by representing the test image in term of a superposition of the class centroids and the shared intra-class differences.
Abstract: Collaborative representation methods, such as sparse subspace clustering (SSC) and sparse representation-based classification (SRC), have achieved great success in face clustering and classification by directly utilizing the training images as the dictionary bases. In this paper, we reveal that the superior performance of collaborative representation relies heavily on the sufficiently large class separability of the controlled face datasets such as Extended Yale B. On the uncontrolled or undersampled dataset, however, collaborative representation suffers from the misleading coefficients of the incorrect classes. To address this limitation, inspired by the success of linear discriminant analysis (LDA), we develop a superposed linear representation classifier (SLRC) to cast the recognition problem by representing the test image in term of a superposition of the class centroids and the shared intra-class differences. In spite of its simplicity and approximation, the SLRC largely improves the generalization ability of collaborative representation, and competes well with more sophisticated dictionary learning techniques, on the experiments of AR and FRGC databases. Enforced with the sparsity constraint, SLRC achieves the state-of-the-art performance on FERET database using single sample per person.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated from both theoretical analysis and numerical experiments that the required protocol overhead of the new beam-training procedure can be significantly reduced, accompanying the power consumption of 60GHz devices.
Abstract: In this article, we suggest an efficient beam switching technique for the emerging 60GHz wireless personal area networks. Given the pre-specified beam codebooks, the beam switching process, aiming to identify the best beam-pair for data transmissions, is formulated as a global optimization problem in a two-dimension plane that is formed by the potential beam pattern index. As the analytical gradient information of the objective reward function is practically unavailable, Rosenbrock numerical algorithm is properly adopted to implement beam searching, by implicitly approaching and exploiting the gradient descent direction through the numerical pattern-search mechanic. In order to enhance search performance, furthermore, a novel initialization process is presented to provide the feasible initial solution for Rosenbrock search. Inspired by the appealing conception of small-region dividing and conquering, this pre-search algorithm can efficiently reduce the search scope and hence improve the success probability. The developed beam switching technique, i.e. an initialization process followed by Rosenbrock search, exhibits a much lower complexity than the current state-of-the-art strategies. It is demonstrated from both theoretical analysis and numerical experiments that, compared with the existing popular methods, the required protocol overhead of the new beam-training procedure can be significantly reduced, accompanying the power consumption of 60GHz devices.

TL;DR: An enhanced biometric and smart card based remote authentication scheme for TMISs and security and performance analyses show that the enhanced scheme satisfies more security properties and less computational cost compared with previously proposed schemes.
Abstract: The telecare medical information systems (TMISs) enable patients to conveniently enjoy telecare services at home. The protection of patient's privacy is a key issue due to the openness of communication environment. Authentication as a typical approach is adopted to guarantee confidential and authorized interaction between the patient and remote server. In order to achieve the goals, numerous remote authentication schemes based on cryptography have been presented. Recently, Arshad et al.(J Med Syst 38(12): 2014) presented a secure and efficient three-factor authenticated key exchange scheme to remedy the weaknesses of Tan et al.'s scheme (J Med Syst 38(3): 2014). In this paper, we found that once a successful off-line password attack that results in an adversary could impersonate any user of the system in Arshad et al.'s scheme. In order to thwart these security attacks, an enhanced biometric and smart card based remote authentication scheme for TMISs is proposed. In addition, the BAN logic is applied to demonstrate the completeness of the enhanced scheme. Security and performance analyses show that our enhanced scheme satisfies more security properties and less computational cost compared with previously proposed schemes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider cooperation among edge nodes and investigate cooperative service caching and workload scheduling in mobile edge computing and develop an iterative algorithm named ICE to solve this problem.
Abstract: Mobile edge computing is beneficial for reducing service response time and core network traffic by pushing cloud functionalities to network edge. Equipped with storage and computation capacities, edge nodes can cache services of resource-intensive and delay-sensitive mobile applications and process the corresponding computation tasks without outsourcing to central clouds. However, the heterogeneity of edge resource capacities and mismatch of edge storage and computation capacities make it difficult to fully utilize both the storage and computation capacities in the absence of edge cooperation. To address this issue, we consider cooperation among edge nodes and investigate cooperative service caching and workload scheduling in mobile edge computing. This problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, which has non-polynomial computation complexity. Addressing this problem faces challenges of sub-problem coupling, computation-communication tradeoff, and edge node heterogeneity. We develop an iterative algorithm named ICE to solve this problem. It is designed based on Gibbs sampling, which has provably near-optimal performance, and the idea of water filling, which has polynomial computation complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm can jointly reduce the service response time and the outsourcing traffic, compared with the benchmark algorithms.
