TL;DR: In this article, a comparative study of the interfacial properties between monolayer/bilayer (ML/BL) WSe2 and Sc, Al, Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt contacts is presented.
Abstract: Formation of low-resistance metal contacts is the biggest challenge that masks the intrinsic exceptional electronic properties of two dimensional WSe2 devices. We present the first comparative study of the interfacial properties between monolayer/bilayer (ML/BL) WSe2 and Sc, Al, Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt contacts by using ab initio energy band calculations with inclusion of the spin-orbital coupling (SOC) effects and quantum transport simulations. The interlayer coupling tends to reduce both the electron and hole Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) and alters the polarity for the WSe2-Au contact, while the SOC chiefly reduces the hole SBH. In the absence of the SOC, the Pd contact has the smallest hole SBH. Dramatically, the Pt contact surpasses the Pd contact and becomes the p-type ohmic or quasi-ohmic contact with inclusion of the SOC. Therefore, p-type ohmic or quasi-ohmic contact exists in WSe2-metal interfaces. Our study provides a theoretical foundation for the selection of favorable metal electrodes in ML/BL WSe2 devices.

TL;DR: One-way coupled map lattices can reach optimal trade-off of security and performance, i.e., it shows high security together with fast encryption (and decryption) speed.
Abstract: One-way coupled map lattices are used for cryptography in secure communication, based on spatiotemporal chaos synchronization. The sensitivity of synchronization between the encryption and decryption systems can be adjusted by varying the system size. With a suitable parameter combination, the cryptosystem can reach optimal trade-off of security and performance, i.e., it shows high security (resistant against the public-structure and known-plaintext attacks) together with fast encryption (and decryption) speed. An experiment of duplex voice transmission through university network is realized, which confirms the above advantages of our approach.

TL;DR: Software-Defined Satellite Payloads Based on Microwave Photonics!, offers a number of distinct features that are not readily available with other means of communication, such as seamless coverage of remote and sparsely populated areas.
Abstract: Software-Defined Satellite Payloads Based on Microwave Photonics! Satellite communication offers a number of distinct features that are not readily available with other means of communication, such as seamless coverage of remote and sparsely populated areas, reliable data relay for deep-space exploration, inherent multicasting and broadcasting capabilities, and reliable performance in extreme conditions (e.g., war, earthquakes, and other adverse events) [1], [2]. In recent years, the steep rise in mobile multimedia applications and increased space exploration activity have created unprecedented opportunities for innovative satellite communication. According to a report provided by the Satellite Industry Association in September 2014, the global revenue of the satellite communication industry for 2013 reached US$189.2 billion-60% of global space revenue and 4% of global telecommunications revenue [3]. Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and many other large technology companies are currently seeking to bolster their satellite communication systems in the next five to ten years, fostering a continuous increase of revenue in this area.

TL;DR: A novel joint atmospheric turbulence (AT) detection and adaptive demodulation technique based on convolutional neural network (CNN) are proposed for the OAM-based free-space optical (FSO) communication, which has the potential to be embedded in charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras deployed at the receiver to improve the reliability and flexibility for theOAM-FSO communication.
Abstract: A novel joint atmospheric turbulence (AT) detection and adaptive demodulation technique based on convolutional neural network (CNN) are proposed for the OAM-based free-space optical (FSO) communication. The AT detecting accuracy (ATDA) and the adaptive demodulating accuracy (ADA) of the 4-OAM, 8-OAM, 16-OAM FSO communication systems over computer-simulated 1000-m turbulent channels with 4, 6, 10 kinds of classic ATs are investigated, respectively. Compared to previous approaches using the self-organizing mapping (SOM), deep neural network (DNN) and other CNNs, the proposed CNN achieves the highest ATDA and ADA due to the advanced multi-layer representation learning without feature extractors designed carefully by numerous experts. For the AT detection, the ATDA of CNN is near 95.2% for 6 kinds of typical ATs, in cases of both weak and strong ATs. For the adaptive demodulation of optical vortices (OV) carrying OAM modes, the ADA of CNN is about 99.8% for the 8-OAM system over the computer-simulated 1000-m free-space strong turbulent link. In addition, the effects of image resolution, iteration number, activation functions and the structure of the CNN are also studied comprehensively. The proposed technique has the potential to be embedded in charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras deployed at the receiver to improve the reliability and flexibility for the OAM-FSO communication.
