Abstract: We have evaluated the channel capacity of OAM-based FSO link under a strong atmospheric turbulence regime when adaptive optics (AO) are employed to correct the wavefront phase distortions of OAM modes. The turbulence is emulated by the Monte-Carlo phase screen method, which is validated by comparison with the theoretical phase structure function. Based on that, a closed-loop AO system with the capability of real-time correction is designed and validated. The simulation results show that the phase distortions of OAM modes induced by turbulence can be significantly compensated by the real-time correction of the properly designed AO. Furthermore, the crosstalk across channels is reduced drastically, while a substantial enhancement of channel capacity can be obtained when AO is deployed.

Abstract: A novel multifrequency printed monopole antenna applied to both WLAN and WiMAX systems is proposed in this letter. The antenna structure is simple, and the size is 34 $\times$ 18 mm $^{2}$ . The proposed microstrip-fed antenna mainly comprises a fork-shaped strip that is etched on a modified rectangular ring and a rectangular-defected ground plane. To experimentally analyze the characteristics of this antenna, the design, fabrication, and measurement have been completed. Good antenna performances have been obtained.

Abstract: We consider a downlink massive MIMO system, where the base station simultaneously sends information and energy to information users and energy users, respectively. The aim is to maximize the minimum harvested energy among the energy users while meeting the rate requirements of information users. With perfect channel state information (CSI), the problem is solved by obtaining the asymptotically optimal power allocation of information users and the combination coefficients of the energy precoder. For the CSI estimation in time-division duplex systems, orthogonal pilot sequences are employed by information users during the uplink, and one common pilot sequence is shared by all energy users. It is shown that the energy-harvesting performance of such a shared pilot scheme is always better than that of the orthogonal pilot scheme. Further, exploiting the intercell interference in multicell systems, a joint precoder is proposed for cooperative energy transfer, for which both the centralized and distributed implementations are given. Results indicate that the cooperative energy transfer always outperforms the noncooperative scheme with either perfect or estimated CSI.

Abstract: Vertical stacking of monolayers via van der Waals (vdW) interaction opens promising routes toward engineering physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials and designing atomically thin devices. However, due to the lack of mechanistic understanding, challenges remain in the controlled fabrication of these structures via scalable methods such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) onto substrates. In this paper, we develop a general multiscale model to describe the size evolution of 2D layers and predict the necessary growth conditions for vertical (initial + subsequent layers) versus in-plane lateral (monolayer) growth. An analytic thermodynamic criterion is established for subsequent layer growth that depends on the sizes of both layers, the vdW interaction energies, and the edge energy of 2D layers. Considering the time-dependent growth process, we find that temperature and adatom flux from vapor are the primary criteria affecting the self-assembled growth. Abstract: This paper addresses the Bayesian estimation of the von-Mises Fisher (vMF) mixture model with variational inference (VI). The learning task in VI consists of optimization of the variational posterior distribution. However, the exact solution by VI does not lead to an analytically tractable solution due to the evaluation of intractable moments involving functional forms of the Bessel function in their arguments. To derive a closed-form solution, we further lower bound the evidence lower bound where the bound is tight at one point in the parameter distribution. While having the value of the bound guaranteed to increase during maximization, we derive an analytically tractable approximation to the posterior distribution which has the same functional form as the assigned prior distribution. The proposed algorithm requires no iterative numerical calculation in the re-estimation procedure, and it can potentially determine the model complexity and avoid the over-fitting problem associated with conventional approaches based on the expectation maximization. Moreover, we derive an analytically tractable approximation to the predictive density of the Bayesian mixture model of vMF distributions. The performance of the proposed approach is verified by experiments with both synthetic and real data.
