Abstract: Oriented nano-microstructure-assisted controllable fabrication, a facile and versatile preparation strategy, is developed to fabricate metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes. With this method, several MOF membranes with tailored structures are prepared, including HKUST-1 (with 3D pores) and M3 (HCOO)6 (with 1D pores; M = Co, Mn, and Mg) membranes, which demonstrate good performances in gas separations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a strategy that visible-light responsive zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-67 (ZIF-67) encapsulates noble-metal sensitized semiconductors, ZnO@M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) to fabricate composite catalysts for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is proposed.
Abstract: A strategy that visible-light responsive zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-67 (ZIF-67) encapsulates noble-metal sensitized semiconductors, ZnO@M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) to fabricate composite catalysts for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is proposed. The obtained ZnO@M@ZIF-67 catalysts have good catalytic performance, particularly, the ZnO@Au@ZIF-67 exhibits quite improved photoconversion efficiency and photocurrent density, superior to most of the reported photoelectrode catalysts. This can be attributed to the wider solar spectra harvesting capability originating from visible-light responsive ZIF-67 and UV-light active ZnO. Simultaneously, their integration enables interfacial electrons in the ZIF-67 shell to easily transfer to the ZnO@Au core, providing good electron–hole separation. In addition, the porous ZIF-67 as a protective shell ensures structural robustness, while maintaining fast ion or gas bubble diffusion through its pores, accounting for stable and excellent PEC performance.

TL;DR: The mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial oxygen uptake were greatly decreased in human epithelial KB cells treated with SWCNTs, which accompanies the reduction of Cyt c, which consequently changed mitochondrial respiration of SWC NTs-treated cells.
Abstract: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are broadly used for various biomedical applications such as drug delivery, in vivo imaging, and cancer photothermal therapy due to their unique physiochemical properties. However, once they enter the cells, the effects of SWCNTs on the intracellular organelles and macromolecules are not comprehensively understood. Cytochrome c (Cyt c), as a key component of the electron transport chain in mitochondria, plays an essential role in cellular energy consumption, growth, and differentiation. In this study, we found the mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial oxygen uptake were greatly decreased in human epithelial KB cells treated with SWCNTs, which accompanies the reduction of Cyt c. SWCNTs deoxidized Cyt c in a pH-dependent manner, as evidenced by the appearance of a 550 nm characteristic absorption peak, the intensity of which increased as the pH increased. Circular dichroism measurement confirmed the pH-dependent conformational change, which facilitated closer association of SWCNTs with the heme pocket of Cyt c and thus expedited the reduction of Cyt c. The electron transfer of Cyt c is also disturbed by SWCNTs, as measured with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. In conclusion, the redox activity of Cyt c was affected by SWCNTs treatment due to attenuated electron transfer and conformational change of Cyt c, which consequently changed mitochondrial respiration of SWCNTs-treated cells. This work is significant to SWCNTs research because it provides a novel understanding of SWCNTs' disruption of mitochondria function and has important implications for biomedical applications of SWCNTs.

TL;DR: The results show that an HEESS with appropriate sizing and enabling energy management can markedly reduce the battery degradation rate by about 40% only at an extra expense of 1/8 of the system cost compared with battery-only energy storage.
Abstract: Electrochemical energy storage systems are fundamental to renewable energy integration and electrified vehicle penetration. Hybrid electrochemical energy storage systems (HEESSs) are an attractive option because they often exhibit superior performance over the independent use of each constituent energy storage. This article provides an HEESS overview focusing on battery-supercapacitor hybrids, covering different aspects in smart grid and electrified vehicle applications. The primary goal of this paper is to summarize recent research progress and stimulate innovative thoughts for HEESS development. To this end, system configuration, DC/DC converter design and energy management strategy development are covered in great details. The state-of-the-art methods to approach these issues are surveyed; the relationship and technological details in between are also expounded. A case study is presented to demonstrate a framework of integrated sizing formulation and energy management strategy synthesis. The results show that an HEESS with appropriate sizing and enabling energy management can markedly reduce the battery degradation rate by about 40% only at an extra expense of 1/8 of the system cost compared with battery-only energy storage.
