TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the current understanding of charge transfer (CT) states and describe how factors such as the geometry of the D-A interface, electronic polarization and the extent of electron delocalization affect their nature and influence the radiative and non-radiative decay processes.
Abstract: In organic solar cells, the charge-transfer (CT) electronic states that form at the interface between the electron-donor (D) and electron-acceptor (A) materials have a crucial role in exciton-dissociation, charge-separation and charge-recombination processes. Since the introduction of active layers consisting of D–A bulk heterojunctions, CT states have been the focus of extensive experimental and theoretical studies. In this Review, we assess the current understanding of CT states and describe how factors such as the geometry of the D–A interface, electronic polarization and the extent of electron delocalization affect their nature and influence the radiative and non-radiative decay processes. We focus on the description and application of fundamental concepts, which provides the framework to discuss the path to organic solar cells with efficiencies comparable to those in inorganic photovoltaic technologies. The charge-transfer electronic states that form at the interfaces between electron-donor and electron-acceptor components have a key role in the electronic processes in organic solar cells. This Review describes the current understanding of how these charge-transfer states affect device performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors comprehensively reviewed the recent advances of reducing the thermal conductivity of potential thermal barrier coating materials by defect engineering and quantitatively estimated the mass and size mismatch between the defects and the host lattice.
Abstract: Low thermal conductivity is the key property dominating the heat insulation ability of thermal barrier coatings (TBC). Reducing the intrinsic thermal conductivity is the major topic for developing advanced TBCs. Defect engineering has attracted much attention in seeking better TBC materials since lattice defects play a crucial role in phonon scattering and thermal conductivity reduction. Oxygen vacancies and substitutions are proven to be the most effective, while the accompanying lattice distortion is also of great importance. In this paper, recent advances of reducing the thermal conductivity of potential thermal barrier coating materials by defect engineering are comprehensively reviewed. Effects of the mass and size mismatch between the defects and the host lattice are quantitatively estimated and unconventional thermal conductivity reduction caused by the lattice distortions is also discussed. Finally, challenges and potential opportunities are briefly assessed to further minimize the thermal conductivity of TBC materials in the future.

TL;DR: In this article, the results of N2-adsorption/desorption and XPS showed that the surface area, Cu+/Cu2+ ratio and the surface amount of Cu content of Cu/ZSM-5 catalysts changed from 324 m2/g, 0.03 and 11.5 wt.
Abstract: Copper, iron, and mixed copper/iron exchanged zeolites containing ZSM-5 and chabazite-like zeolites (SSZ-13, SAPO-18 and SAPO-34) were studied for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 with or without propene. Cu/ZSM-5, Cu/SSZ-13, Cu/SAPO-18 and Cu/SAPO-34 exhibited high NO conversions without propene. However, as compared to Cu/ZSM-5, NO conversions over Cu/SSZ-13, Cu/SAPO-18 and Cu/SAPO-34 were more stable with propene, due to coke formation over Cu/ZSM-5. The results of N2-adsorption/desorption and XPS showed that the surface area, Cu+/Cu2+ ratio and the surface amount of Cu content of Cu/ZSM-5 catalysts changed from 324 m2/g, 0.03 and 11.5 wt% for the fresh Cu/ZSM-5 catalyst to 68 m2/g, 0.34 and 5.3 wt% for the used sample. However, there were little changes between fresh and used Cu/SSZ-13, Cu/SAPO-18 and Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts. Moreover, Cu/ZSM-5 catalyst showed a larger decline in NO conversion with time on stream and a higher adsorption amount of propene compared to Cu/SSZ-13, Cu/SAPO-18 and Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts. The resistance to hydrocarbon poisoning depended on the pore geometry of the zeolites. During NH3-SCR, the presence of medium-pore sizes in Cu/ZSM-5 led to hydrocarbon deposition, which blocked the active sites and also decreased the active intermediates needed for NO conversion. Cu/SSZ-13, Cu/SAPO-18 and Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts, on the other hand, with small pores and cage diameters and with one-dimensional channel structures, showed higher hydrocarbon poison resistance. Moreover, these copper exchanged small-pore zeolites showed much higher hydrothermal stability than the medium-pore Cu/ZSM-5.

TL;DR: In this paper, two promising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proposed to capture volatile organic compounds even at low pressure and high temperature, e.g. benzene uptakes of 1.65 and 0.71 mmol g −1 at 0.12 kPa and 80 kC respectively.
