TL;DR: A comparable increase in metronidazole resistance was observed in both nonulcer dyspepsia patients and peptic ulcer patients, and the prevalence of metronidine resistance in Western Europeans increased from 5% in 1993 to 28% in 1996.
Abstract: The prevalence of primary metronidazole resistance of Helicobacter pylori was studied in one Dutch hospital from 1993 to 1996 and in two additional Dutch hospitals in 1993 and 1996. All cultures of antral biopsy specimens yielding H. pylori in the study period were evaluated, except those from patients who had received anti-H. pylori treatment; 1,037 H. pylori strains, all from different patients were included. Metronidazole resistance was determined by disk diffusion in 1993 and by Epilipsometer-test in 1994 to 1996. Metronidazole resistance increased from 7% (18/245) in 1993 to 32% (161/509) in 1996. More patients with nonulcer dyspepsia and more non-Western European patients were seen in 1996 than in 1993, but age and sex differences were not observed. A comparable increase in metronidazole resistance was observed in both nonulcer dyspepsia patients and peptic ulcer patients, and the prevalence of metronidazole resistance in Western Europeans increased from 5% in 1993 to 28% in 1996.

TL;DR: A 21‐year‐old multiparous female exhibiting 31–41 day menstrual cycles was given hFSH and hCG to stimulate follicular development and revealed a single fetus at 15 weeks p.t., and unassisted delivery of a live 1.37 kg female infant occurred at 29 weeks.
Abstract: A 21-year-old multiparous female exhibiting 31-41 day menstrual cycles was given hFSH (225 IU/day, Metrodin 75, from cycle day 3 through 9 (menses = day 1) and hCG (10,000 IU, Profasi, on day 10 to stimulate follicular development. At 35 h after hCG, under isoflurane (AErrane) anesthesia, follicles were aspirated by controlled suction under transvaginal ultrasound guidance. Metaphase II oocytes (n = 11) were placed in modified human tubal fluid (mHTF, 100 microliters) medium under oil at 37 degrees C in humidified 5% CO2. Frozen semen, collected by voluntary ejaculation, was thawed (70 degrees C H2O bath, 6 sec), diluted slowly, centrifuged, and resuspended in mHTF, and 160,000 motile spermatozoa/ml were added at 6 h after oocyte recovery. At 21 h postinsemination (p.i.) eight oocytes were at the two-cell stage, five were cryopreserved, and three were cultured to the six- to eight-cell stage in mHTF with granulosa cells before transcervical uterine transfer at 47 h p.i. using a Teflon catheter. Micronized progesterone (400 mg/d) was orally administered for 10 weeks posttransfer (p.t.). Ultrasound examination revealed a single fetus at 15 weeks p.t., and unassisted delivery of a live 1.37 kg female infant occurred at 29 weeks. Am. J. Primatol. 41:247-260, 1997.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the procedural discourse skills of a group of 26 TBI speakers, with those of two demographically distinct control groups: orthopaedic patients and university students.
Abstract: Procedural discourse is a monologue discourse task concerned with explaining to a listener how a particular activity is carried out The study reported here is part of a series of investigations into discourse abilities following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) The aim of this study was to compare the procedural discourse skills of a group of 26 TBI speakers, with those of two demographically distinct control groups The first control group comprised 26 non-TBI orthopaedic patients, and the second control group comprised 26 university students These control groups were selected because of the hypothesis that premorbid demographic factors could influence sociolinguistic skills, and hence performance on a procedural discourse task The TBI group was systematically compared with the control groups on content, productivity, and pragmatic measures They were not significantly different from orthopaedic patients on measures relating to content and productivity; however, they did differ significan

TL;DR: Three regimens of triple therapy involving a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori infection are suggested and the impact of imidazole resistance on the efficacy of such regimens is largely unknown.
Abstract: Background: Triple therapy involving a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics has been suggested as an effective treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection. The impact of imidazole resistance on the efficacy of such regimens is largely unknown. Methods: One hundred patients with culture proven H. pylori infection were treated with omeprazole 40 mg b.d., amoxycillin 1000 mg b.d., and tinidazole 500 mg b.d. for one week. Pre-treatment imidazole susceptibility was measured by disk diffusion. Resistance was confirmed by E-test. Eradication was assessed by endoscopy 6–8 weeks after the end of treatment. In cases of doubt a 13C-urea breath test was performed. Side-effects were scored using a semiquantitative scale. Results: H. pylori was eradicated in 95% of the patients with an imidazole-susceptible strain and in 69% of the patients with a resistant strain (P<0.005). Significant side-effects were seen in 12%. Conclusion: This proton pump inhibitor triple therapy is a simple, reasonably effective regimen with few significant side-effects. The efficacy is dependent on the susceptibility of the infecting H. pylori strain.

TL;DR: Findings revealed the greatest number of significant positive correlations with the Feminine orientation; Androgyny was significantly linked with qualitative well-being and with a positive self-comparison in relation to peers and Masculinity was positively linked with health behavior.
Abstract: This study investigated the relationships of gender role orientations (Feminine, Masculine, & Androgynous) with self-perceived health status, health behavior, and qualitative well-being experience in a simple random sample of community-dwelling older women (N = 70). Instruments used were The Bern Sex Role Inventory (Bern, 1974); The Seniors' Lifestyle Inventory (Schwirian, 1991); and The Integration Inventory (Ruffing-Rahal, 1991). Findings revealed the greatest number of significant positive correlations with the Feminine orientation; Androgyny was significantly linked with qualitative well-being and with a positive self-comparison in relation to peers and Masculinity was positively linked with health behavior. Findings are interpreted in light of successful aging issues for older women.
