TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to reduce the oxide content of complex ores by using a carbonaceous reducing agent in or with the pelleted ores, and also an agent (e.g. SiO 2 ) may be included in the pellets to reduce viscosity of the ore.
Abstract: 1,193,237. Reducing ores. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO. OF CANADA Ltd. March 4, 1968 [March 6, 1967], No. 10414/68. Heading C7D. [Also in Division C1] Complex ores (i.e. containing oxides of two or more metals) are pelleted, the pellets are mixed or coated with a non-fluxing refractory oxide (e.g. alumina, magnesia or titania, or olivine, asbestos, peridotite or forsterite containing no more than 7% iron but preferably unweathered serpentine) which will react therewith during heating to form an oxide solid solution coating with a softening point above that of the ore and above the heating temperature, to prevent sticking of the pellets and then heating the pellets in a reducing atmosphere to reduce at least part of the oxide content of the ore and to coalesce the metal. The reduction may be accomplished solely by means of the furnace atmosphere but it is preferred to include a carbonaceous reducing agent in or with the pellets, also an agent (e. g. SiO 2 ) may be included in the pellets to reduce the viscosity of the ore. The metal values may be recovered from the treated ore by magnetic separation and sulphur, as such or in a combined form may be included in pellets of Ni containing ores (e.g. laterite) to increase the size of the Ni particles produced.
