Abstract: A method for measuring the thickness of a refractory laid-up against the interior surface of the steel shell of a metallurgical apparatus includes placing at least one monitoring device in a critical wear area of the apparatus in a manner such that the free end of the device is at a known distance from the hot face of the refractory and the confined end extends beyond the outer surface of the steel shell. The device is connected to an electronic time-domain reflectometer by electrical connecting means. Timed pulses are generated and impressed in the device by the instrument and reflections of the pulses are received by and are visually displayed on the reflectometer. The length of the device appears on the display as a straight line bounded by two inflections. The straight line is indicative of the thickness of the refractory. The device includes a metallic conductor coaxial with an outer metallic sheath and separated therefrom by a refractory having a desired dielectric constant. The device has a free end and a confined end. The confined end may be contained in a junction box provided with electrical connecting means. Electric insulating packing may be used in the junction box.

Abstract: Strand surface temperature is measured accurately at multiple stations in spray cooling region of a continuous metal caster where environmental conditions are severe. Each station includes a pyrometer having a light pipe with a tip aimed at the strand and provided with both air and water wash streams. Control devices, operating in response to sequence timers, periodically resets measuring circuits, interrupts each strand cooling spray and light pipe wash water stream, and turns on the air wash stream, all during a short temperature sampling period. Selection of sampling period is governed by light pipe location, pyrometer response time, and strand reheat properties when spray is off. The peak temperature measured at each station is stored as the true strand temperature for that location. Thereafter strand and light pipe cooling are restored while the air wash is interrupted. Stored temperature signals may be recorded and analyzed to define caster operating parameters and cooling practices.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a method of beneficiating a material, such as coal, by subjecting the coal to be treated to the action of a dense-media cyclone, where the dense-media thereof is a slurry of magnetite in water. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method to control the separating gravity of said cyclone within predetermined limits by (1) measuring the flow rate and percent magnetite in the flow discharging from the cyclone, and (2) based on pre-calibrated data, adjusting the feed flow and content, i.e. magnetite and/or water, into said cyclone, thereby controlling said separating gravity within predetermined limits.

Abstract: The structures and mechanical properties of a series of thermomechanically processed, direct-quenched martensitic 0.1C-1.4Mn-0.5Mo-B steels containing from 0 to 0.24 wt pct va have been investigated and compared to those obtained after a conventional austenitizing-and-quenching treatment. For all processing conditions, vanadium additions to the base composition are found to increase hardenability (ideal critical parameter,D,); the largest effects (up to a 90 pct increase inDI) are noted when samples are hot-rolled prior to direct quenching. Vanadium additions are also observed to provide significant strengthening in the quenched-and-tempered condition as the result of the precipitation of fine V-Mo carbides. The strengthening increment due to these precipitates is approximately 100 MPa/0.1 wt pct V over the range of vanadium additions examined. At the same time, however, these precipitates reduce notch toughness; on the average, the 20 J transition temperature increases by about 4 °C for each 10 MPa increment in yield strength. For the conditions examined, the best balance of strength and toughness is obtained in direct-quenched samples which are control-rolled(i.e., rolling is completed below the austenite recrystallization temperature) prior to quenching.
