16 Apr 1973TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for improving the through thickness properties of coarse grain ferrous alloy plate through a controlled deoxidizing and desulfurizing practice is described, which includes adding rare earth additions to the tapping stream or ladle during tapping of the unkilled or non-deoxidized molten Ferrous alloy.
Abstract: A procedure for improving the through thickness properties of coarse grain ferrous alloy plate through a controlled deoxidizing and desulfurizing practice. Said practice includes adding rare earth additions to the tapping stream or ladle during tapping of the unkilled or non-deoxidized molten ferrous alloy. The ferrous alloy, when processed into plates, is characterized by a low sulfur content below about .015 percent, by weight, preferably less than about .010 percent, and by excellent ductility when tensile tested in any axial direction.

24 Sep 1976TL;DR: In a rotating drum or winch type long stroke pumping unit as mentioned in this paper, the motor is energized at the point of maximum load upon the pumping string during the upstroke and point of minimum load on the downstroke.
Abstract: In a rotating drum or winch type long stroke pumping unit in which the motor which powers the pumping unit operates only during the central portion of the pumping stroke, the motor is energized at the point of maximum load upon the pumping string during the upstroke and the point of minimum load on the downstroke. By precisely coordinating the energization of the motor with the load upon the pumping string detrimental oscillations in the pumping string are damped out.

30 Mar 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for detecting molten slag in a tap stream between a steel making basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and corresponding ladle is presented, which uses mainly long IR wavelengths (e.g. wavelengths of from about 8 to 14 μm) when imaging the molten tap stream, because these wavelengths are less susceptible to being blocked or absorbed by airborne gases and particles frequently found in BOF environments.
Abstract: A system and method for detecting molten slag in a tap stream between a steel making basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and corresponding ladle. BOFs are used in the manufacture of steel. An infrared (IR) imaging or detecting device is used to image/view the BOF-to-ladle tap stream, the steam transmitting energy indicative of whether molten steel and/or slag is in the stream at a given time. The imaging device uses mainly long IR wavelengths (e.g. wavelengths of from about 8 to 14 μm) when imaging the molten tap stream, because these wavelengths are less susceptible to being blocked or absorbed by airborne gases and particles frequently found in BOF environments. In certain embodiments, all IR wavelengths other than those greater than about 8 μm are filtered out and are not used to detect slag in the tap stream.

04 May 1982TL;DR: A temperature measuring probe and method of detecting infrared radiation from flue walls and transmitting the detected infrared radiation through fiber optic cables to photoelectric detection-conversion cells which convert the radiation to electrical signals which are measured and translated into temperatures is described in this paper.
Abstract: A temperature measuring probe and method of detecting infrared radiation from flue walls and transmitting the detected infrared radiation through fiber optic cables to photoelectric detection-conversion cells which convert the radiation to electrical signals which are measured and translated into temperatures. Concentric metallic flexible hose mounted on a carriage for mobility provides water cooling for the fiber optic cable with a portable reeling machine for controlling the movement of the cable, hose, and probe head. The probe head provides viewing ports for the terminal ends of the fiber optic cable.
