Abstract: In this work some of the structures typical of those found in thermomechanically processed steels were reproduced by cold work, cold work and recovery, and recrystallization treatments of vacuum-melted iron single-crystals and polycrystals. The mechanical properties of the microstructural features such as subgrain formation, texture development, and grain elongation were recorded. It was shown that although the dislocation subboundaries produced on recovery add an increment of strength to that produced by grain boundaries, they are less effective strengtheners than high-angle grain boundaries. Further, the data suggests that yield strength is related not only to subgrain size but also to the angle of misfit of the subgrain boundaries. Although strength increased with subgrain boundary formation, toughness remained constant. Consequently, the introduction of subgrain boundaries offers a means of improving strength while maintaining toughness. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of cold-worked as well as cold-worked and recovered polycrystalline iron varied with specimen orientation relative to the direction of deformation. These variations were primarily a function of the anisotropy of grain dimension that is produced by cold deformation. Toughness was not influenced by the preferred orientations produced by the various processing techniques.

Abstract: Computerized electro-optical system gages two orthogonal dimensions of a moving hot bar and plots cold bar profile. Dual back-lighted electronic camera heads mounted 90° apart on a scanner generate separate bar shadow pulses representing othogonal bar dimensions. Each camera source of bar pulses is processed in individual camera electronics where it is presumed the bar pulse has been corrected for optical and electronic system sources of error. If each bar pulse is not corrected, it is assumed that both a bar size pulse and bar position-in-field-of-view pulse are generated by each camera electronics and fed to a digital computer. The computer is programmed to correct for optical and electronic errors, bar temperature and composition and other errors. Two corrected bar size signals, together with a scanner position signal and a bar aim size signal, are used to plot cold bar profile deviation from aim size. CRT and printing terminals readout and printout bar profile data and interact with the computer.

Abstract: ZINC-ALLOY COATED FERROUS PRODUCT RESISTANT TO EMBRITTLEMENT Abstract of the Disclosure This invention is directed to an improved zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product, particularly sheet and strip, which is resistant to intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Use of such zinc containing metallic coated ferrous product in elevated-temperature service, such as found with certain appliances and automotive exhaust components, is enhanced by the coated products of this invention. The resistance to embrittlement of the zinc containing metallic coated ferrous base, when subjected to elevated service temperatures, is achieved by the use of a high-phosphorus containing steel base. For a plain carbon steel base, a phosphorus content of at least 0.020% by weight, preferably at least 0.030%, and more preferably at least 0.039% was found sufficient to render such zinc-alloy coated ferrous base resistant to embrittlement by zinc. By use of such high phosphorus ferrous base, for the reception of a zinc containing alloy coating, an improved metallic coated ferrous product has been found which resists intergranular penetration by zinc and embrittlement of the ferrous base. Such coated product has extended service life at temperatures above about 450°F (232°C) and when restored to room temperature possesses a high degree of ductility.
