Abstract: Introduction: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the status of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants as biomarkers in human plasma. Methods: The extent of lipid peroxidation as evidenced by the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated dienes (CD) as well as the status of the antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in serum samples of 40 breast cancer patients in and around Coimbatore, India, were studied. Controls consisted of members of the public with no previous history of breast cancer or other cancer-related diseases. Results: The plasma samples of the breast cancer patients showed enhanced level of lipid peroxidation when compared to the corresponding controls. This was accompanied by a significant elevation in both enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants. Conclusion: These findings indicate the significant increase in lipid peroxidation as evidenced by the level of TBARS and antioxidant status such as elevated SOD, CAT, GPx, GSH and GST in samples from breast cancer patients compared to controls.

Abstract: In the present work, perovskite LaFeO3 thin films with unique morphology were obtained on silicon substrate using radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The effect of thickness and temperature on the morphological and structural properties of LaFeO3 films was systematically studied. The X-ray diffraction pattern explored the highly oriented orthorhombic perovskite phase of the prepared thin films along [121]. Electron micrograph images exposed the network and nanocube surface morphology of LaFeO3 thin films with average sizes of ∼90 and 70 nm, respectively. The developed LaFeO3 thin films not only possess unique morphology, but also influence the gas-sensing performance toward NO2. Among the two morphologies, nanocubes exhibited high sensitivity, good selectivity, fast response–recovery time, and excellent repeatability for 1 ppm level of NO2 gas at room temperature. Abstract: Adsorption of vanadium(V) from aqueous solution onto ZnCl2 activated carbon developed from coconut coir pith was investigated to assess the possible use of this adsorbent. The influence of various parameters such as agitation time, vanadium concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature has been studied. First, second order, Elovich and Bangham’s models were used to study the adsorption kinetics. The adsorption system follows second order and Bangham’s kinetic models. Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherms have been employed to analyze the adsorption equilibrium data. Equilibrium adsorption data followed all the four isotherms—Langmuir, Freundlich, D-R and Temkin. The Langmuir adsorption capacity (Q 0) was found to be 24.9 mg g− 1 of the adsorbent. The per cent adsorption was maximum in the pH range 4.0–9.0. The pH effect and desorption studies showed that ion exchange mechanism might be involved in the adsorption process. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG 0, ΔH 0 and ΔS 0 for the adsorption were evaluated. Effect of competitive anions in the aqueous solution such as PO4 3 −, SO4 2−, ClO4 −, MoO4 2−, SeO3 2−, NO3 − and Cl− was examined. SEM and FTIR were used to study the surface of vanadium(V) loaded ZnCl2 activated carbon. Removal of vanadium(V) from synthetic ground water was also tested. Results show that ZnCl2 activated coir pith carbon is effective for the removal of vanadium(V) from water.
