Abstract: Tactile sensing is a key sensor modality for robots interacting with their surroundings. These sensors provide a rich and diverse set of data signals that contain detailed information collected from contacts between the robot and its environment. The data are however not limited to individual contacts and can be used to extract a wide range of information about the objects in the environment as well as the actions of the robot during the interactions. In this article, we provide an overview of tactile information and its applications in robotics. We present a hierarchy consisting of raw, contact, object, and action levels to structure the tactile information, with higher-level information often building upon lower-level information. We discuss different types of information that can be extracted at each level of the hierarchy. The article also includes an overview of different types of robot applications and the types of tactile information that they employ. Finally we end the article with a discussion for future tactile applications which are still beyond the current capabilities of robots.

Abstract: We present a lattice-QCD-based determination of the chiral phase transition temperature in QCD with two degenerate, massless quarks and a physical strange quark mass using lattice QCD calculations with the highly improved staggered quarks action. We propose and calculate two novel estimators for the chiral transition temperature for several values of the light quark masses, corresponding to Goldstone pion masses in the range of $58\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{m}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}163\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$. The chiral phase transition temperature is determined by extrapolating to vanishing pion mass using universal scaling analysis. Finite-volume effects are controlled by extrapolating to the thermodynamic limit using spatial lattice extents in the range of 2.8--4.5 times the inverse of the pion mass. Continuum extrapolations are carried out by using three different values of the lattice cutoff, corresponding to lattices with temporal extents ${N}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}=6$, 8, and 12. After thermodynamic, continuum, and chiral extrapolations, we find the chiral phase transition temperature ${T}_{c}^{0}=13{2}_{\ensuremath{-}6}^{+3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$.

Abstract: We studied the capability of one male and one female harbour seal Phoca vitulina to discriminate diameter differences of circular discs by means of active touch with their mystacial vibrissae. To prevent the animals from perceiving visual information, they were blindfolded during trials. In a two-alternative forced-choice procedure, the seals were required to choose the larger of two Perspex discs. Weber fractions c (the ratio of the lowest diameter difference detected by the seals on 75% of occasions to the starting disc diameter D, delta D/D = c) were determined for three standard discs (diameters 1.12cm, 5.04cm and 8.74cm) by the psychophysical method of limits. While the seals achieved Weber fractions of 0.29 (male) and 0.26 (female) at the smallest standard disc, their performance improved with increasing disc size, resulting in an approximately constant Weber fraction of 0.13 (male) and 0.08 (female) for the two larger standard discs. The difference in performance between the two seals did not reflect a real difference in sensitivity, but may best be explained by a difference in choice behaviour. As a measure of tactile acuity, the Weber fractions obtained for the larger standard discs indicate that harbour seals can use their mystacial vibrissae as efficiently for active touch as monkeys use their hands.

Abstract: A thorough discussion of the statistical ensemble of scale-free connected random tree graphs is presented. Methods borrowed from field theory are used to define the ensemble and to study analytically its properties. The ensemble is characterized by two global parameters, the fractal and the spectral dimensions, which are explicitly calculated. It is discussed in detail how the geometry of the graphs varies when the weights of the nodes are modified. The stability of the scale-free regime is also considered: when it breaks down, either a scale is spontaneously generated or else, a "singular" node appears and the graphs become crumpled. A new computer algorithm to generate these random graphs is proposed. Possible generalizations are also discussed. In particular, more general ensembles are defined along the same lines and the computer algorithm is extended to arbitrary (degenerate) scale-free random graphs.
