Abstract: Bacterioplankton of the marine Roseobacter clade have genomes that reflect a dynamic environment and diverse interactions with marine plankton. Comparative genome sequence analysis of three cultured representatives suggests that cellular requirements for nitrogen are largely provided by regenerated ammonium and organic compounds (polyamines, allophanate, and urea), while typical sources of carbon include amino acids, glyoxylate, and aromatic metabolites. An unexpectedly large number of genes are predicted to encode proteins involved in the production, degradation, and efflux of toxins and metabolites. A mechanism likely involved in cell-to-cell DNA or protein transfer was also discovered: vir-related genes encoding a type IV secretion system typical of bacterial pathogens. These suggest a potential for interacting with neighboring cells and impacting the routing of organic matter into the microbial loop. Genes shared among the three roseobacters and also common in nine draft Roseobacter genomes include those for carbon monoxide oxidation, dimethylsulfoniopropionate demethylation, and aromatic compound degradation. Genes shared with other cultured marine bacteria include those for utilizing sodium gradients, transport and metabolism of sulfate, and osmoregulation.

Abstract: Predatory bacteria remain molecularly enigmatic, despite their presence in many microbial communities. Here we report the complete genome of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100, a predatory Gram-negative bacterium that invades and consumes other Gram-negative bacteria. Its surprisingly large genome shows no evidence of recent gene transfer from its prey. A plethora of paralogous gene families coding for enzymes, such as hydrolases and transporters, are used throughout the life cycle of B. bacteriovorus for prey entry, prey killing, and the uptake of complex molecules.

Abstract: Glucosinolates are a class of plant secondary metabolites that serve as antiherbivore compounds in plant defence. A previously identified Arabidopsis thaliana activation-tagged line, displaying altered levels of secondary metabolites, was shown here to be affected in the content of indolic and aliphatic glucosinolates. The observed chemotype was caused by activation of the R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene HIG1 (HIGH INDOLIC GLUCOSINOLATE 1, also referred to as MYB51). HIG1/MYB51 was shown to activate promoters of indolic glucosinolate biosynthetic genes leading to increased accumulation of indolic glucosinolates. The corresponding loss-of-function mutant hig1-1 contained low levels of glucosinolates. Overexpression of the related transcription factor ATR1/MYB34, which had previously been described as a regulator of indolic glucosinolate and indole-3-acetic acid homeostasis, in the hig1-1 mutant background led to a partial rescue of the mutant chemotype along with a severe high-auxin growth phenotype. Overexpression of MYB122, another close homologue of HIG1/MYB51, did not rescue the hig1-1 chemotype, but caused a high-auxin phenotype and increased levels of indolic glucosinolates in the wild-type. By contrast, overexpression of HIG1/MYB51 resulted in the specific accumulation of indolic glucosinolates without affecting auxin metabolism and plant morphology. Mechanical stimuli such as touch or wounding transiently induced the expression of HIG1/MYB51 but not of ATR1/MYB34, and HIG1/MYB51 overexpression reduced insect herbivory as revealed by dual-choice assays with the generalist lepidopteran herbivore, Spodoptera exigua. We hypothesize that HIG1/MYB51 is a regulator of indolic glucosinolate biosynthesis that also controls responses to biotic challenges.

Abstract: Certain foods might be more frequently eaten under stress or when higher levels of depressive symptoms are experienced. We examined whether poor nutritional habits are associated with stress and depressive symptoms and whether the relationships differ by country and gender in a sample from three European countries collected as part of a Cross National Student Health Survey. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among first-year students in Germany (N = 696), Poland (N = 489) and Bulgaria (N = 654). Self-administered questionnaires included a 12-item food frequency questionnaire, Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale, and a modified Beck Depression Index. Linear regression analyses were conducted for two outcomes, perceived stress and depressive symptoms. Food consumption frequencies differed by country and gender, as did depressive symptoms and perceived stress. For male students, none of the food consumption groups were associated with perceived stress or depressive symptoms. In females, perceived stress was associated with more frequent consumption of sweets/fast foods and less frequent consumption of fruits/vegetables. Additionally, depressive symptoms were associated with less frequent consumption of fruits/vegetables and meat. Our data show consistent associations between unhealthy food consumption and depressive symptoms and perceived stress among female students from three European countries, but not among male students. This suggests that efforts to reduce depressive symptoms and stress among female students may also lead to the consumption of healthier foods and/or vice-versa.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to report on some recent results on computing Hochschild cohomology groups of finite-dimensional algebras. For this let k be an algebraically closed field and A a finite-dimensional k-algebra (associative, with unit). By modA we denote the category of finitely generated left A-modules. Let AXA be a finitely generated A-bimodule. The Hochschild cohomology groups Hi(A,X) (i 0) were introduced by Hochschild [Ho] (for a definition see section 1). The lowdimensional groups (i ::; 2) have a very concrete interpretation of classical algebraic structures such as derivations and extensions. It was observed by Gerstenhaber [GeJ that there are also connections to algebraic geometry. In fact, H2(A, A) controls the deformation theory of A. And it was shown that the algebras A which satisfy H2(A, A) = 0 are rigid. For a similar approach we also mention an article of Gabriel [Ga L]. Despite this very little was done in actual computations for particular classes of finitedimensional algebras. In section 1 we briefly review the fundamental definitions of Hochschild cohomology and include an alternative description which one often uses for direct computations. In section 2 we present some computations. This includes a report on results due to Cibils [elJ, [C2J, [C3J and Gerstenhaber and Schack [GSJ. For some of these results we have included proofs and some examples. In section 3 we deal with derivations. In the remaining two sections we outline how recently emerged methods in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras yield information on the Hochschild cohomology.
