TL;DR: Results are inconsistent with a feature-mixing explanation of the asymmetry, but contrast-specific lateral inhibition can account for the phenomena.
Abstract: The effect on both detection and identification of placing a non-target character to the foveal or peripheral side of the position of a parafoveally presented target character was examined in two experiments. The experiments found more interference with both tasks when the nontarget was peripheral to the target position, but only when the target and nontarget were both darker or brighter than the background. If one character was darker than the background, and the other was brighter, the asymmetry appeared in neither task. In Experiment 2, performance in both tasks was poorer when the two characters had the same features, but this effect was independent of both nontarget position and target-nontarget contrast. While these results are inconsistent with a feature-mixing explanation of the asymmetry, contrast-specific lateral inhibition can account for the phenomena.

TL;DR: For the past four years, I have been developing a managerial course focusing on action skills as discussed by the authors, and I am excited by the potential of this approach, even though there is a great deal to learn about how to implement it.
Abstract: For the past four years, I have been developing a managerial course focusing on &dquo;action skills.&dquo; I am excited by the potential of this approach, even though there is a great deal to learn about how to implement it. Still, in looking at the portfolio of materials I’m using in my managerial skills course this semester (and the overstuffed resource folders taking up too much space in my file cabinets), I see the distance traveled since I started tinkering in this area. It is my learning from classroom trial and error that I would like to share in this article. In teaching a skills course, the following questions have repeatedly come up:

TL;DR: A substantial body of literature has been produced in the twentieth century by religious and philosophical writers on the ethics of belief as mentioned in this paper, which has generally focused on the processes leading up to belief within the individual, so that it would not be inaccurate to say that for most of these writers ‘the Ethics of belief’ means "the ethics of coming-to-believe".
Abstract: A substantial body of literature has been produced in the twentieth century by religious and philosophical writers on the ethics of belief. Discussion of this topic has generally focused on the processes leading up to belief within the individual, so that it would not be inaccurate to say that for most of these writers ‘the ethics of belief’ means ‘the ethics of coming–to–believe’. There has been little attention among these writers, however, to the moral questions which surround the production or inducement of beliefs in others, to the ethics of persuasion. An extension of the ethics of belief to cover moral issues which arise in connection with persuasion seems reasonable; the ethics of belief, widely construed, might be said to encompass questions about both the production of beliefs within oneself and the inducement of beliefs in others.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify the dual nature of learning in an institution: formal, intended learning provided by the institution, and learning which takes place simply from the experience of participating in an educational experience.
Abstract: An advertising blurb for a recent film stated that &dquo; ... going to school can be an education in itself!&dquo; This statement succinctly identifies the dual nature of learning in an institution. On the one hand, there is the formal, intended learning provided by the institution. On the other hand, there is learning which takes place simply from the experience of participating in an educational

TL;DR: Peripheral placement of the nontarget was more disruptive than foveal placement, and this asymmetry was significantly more pronounced at a 75-msec interval than at either of the other two.
Abstract: Summary The degree to which the identification of a parafoveally presented letter target was impaired by being flanked by a foveal or peripheral nontarget at a target-mask interval of zero, 75, or 150 msec, was examined Peripheral placement of the nontarget was more disruptive than foveal placement, and this asymmetry was significantly more pronounced at a 75-msec interval than at either of the other two This finding is consonant with explanations of the asymmetry based on target visibility rather than on criterion or response factors

TL;DR: The factor structure of the Health Locus of Control (HLC) scale is compared for two groups of women differing in regard to experience with major illness and physical fitness activities.
Abstract: The factor structure of the Health Locus of Control (HLC) scale is compared for two groups of women differing in regard to experience with major illness and physical fitness activities. Although both groups yielded a two-factor structure, certain noteworthy contrasts emerged. For healthy women engaged in physical fitness activities, a personal responsibility dimension was found to be central. For a group of cancer patients, a "fate" component appeared primary in variance accounted for in the HLC scale. Implications of these findings are discussed.

TL;DR: It was determined that the "negative air ionization" could not be considered as an effective means of aerosol control in turkey rearing confinements.
Abstract: Aerosol control is a significant problem in agriculture and industry. Two separate studies were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a “negative air ionization” system in aerosol control. The first study was conducted with a turkey “brooder” barn and a control for a six-week period. The second study was conducted with a turkey “grow-out” barn and a control for a twelve-week period. Sampling parameters for both studies included environmental aerosol sampling, ion imbalance measurements, relative humidity, temperature and barometric pressure measurements and daily turkey mortality. Study two also included post study bird weights. Results of sampling parameters were consistent between study one and study two. No significant difference was found between test and control total average aerosol concentration for both studies. Ion imbalance measurements served to indicate that test environments were negatively ionized while control environments experienced normal environmental conditions. Meterological par...

TL;DR: Report-order inversions for two parafoveally presented stimuli were examined by presenting the pair members side by side or one above the other, and inversions seem to stem from the particular difficulty humans have in judging left from right.
Abstract: Summary Report-order inversions for two parafoveally presented stimuli were examined by presenting the pair members side by side or one above the other. Regardless of whether the pair appeared above, below, to the left of, or to the right of fixation, inversions predominated when members were presented side by side. Instead of stemming from feature mislocalizations which sometimes place distinctive features from the more peripheral figure to the foveal side of the more foveal member, inversions seem to stem from the particular difficulty humans have in judging left from right.
