TL;DR: In a survey of perceptual differences about job skills, job roles, and non-salary incentives of systems analysts, results show that analysts and users differ significantly in their perceptions of skills and roles for systems analysts.
Abstract: System analysts are service providers who are required to work closely with users for the purpose of defining, developing and implementing computer-based systems. Analysts and users in private organizations may have different expectations and proficiencies than those in public organizations, in part due to the types of applications required. Beliefs about how others are supposed to perform and what motivates them contribute to a variety of behavioral responses. Conflict between analysts and users may have serious consequences that can be very costly, such as poorly developed systems, behavioral dysfunctions (e.g., mistrust, avoidance, rejection), and negative user satisfaction. An interesting research question is whether perceptual differences exist among systems analysts and users about how systems analysts perform their jobs, as well as whether the perceptions are the same for public and private organizations. In a survey of perceptual differences about job skills, job roles, and non-salary incentives of systems analysts, results from872 questionnaires show that analysts and users differ significantly in their perceptions of skills and roles for systems analysts. Public and private systems analysts and users differ significantly on perception of all three measures. The results provide evidence that analysts, more so than users, recognize the importance of behavioral skills for effective development. This difference may be a major source of conflict, with users expecting analysts to exhibit technical skills in situations where behavioral skills are required. Public and private sector differences suggest that even though the process of systems development may be very similar, users and analysts in public organizations may, in fact, be different than their counterparts in private organizations. An exploration of these sector differences should be addressed by future research. Information systems managers may use the results to guide educational programs for users, develop better assessment measures for analysts, and establish better mechanisms for providing important non-salary incentives for analysts.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed gender differences in the environmental orientations of male and female publics and environmental activists in two postindustrial nations -Canada and the United States -and found that women are more likely than men to hold pro-environmental beliefs.
Abstract: T ? zHIS study analyzes gender differences in the environmental orientations of male and female publics and environmental activists in two postindustrial nations -Canada and the United States. We are primarily interested in the following questions: (1) Are women more likely than men to hold pro-environmental beliefs? (2) If so, will this difference be evident among both the general public and those individuals who have already distinguished themselves from the general public by joining environmental organizations? (3) Will this difference persist when publics and activists are compared in two countries that take opposing viewpoints on the environmental issue of most concern in this study-acid rain? These questions will be addressed through analyses of survey responses from samples of the general public and members of environmental organizations in the Canadian Province of Ontario and the State of Michigan.

TL;DR: Logic programming is investigated as a vehicle for structuring and implementing decision support systems, with particular attention paid to those dealing with financial modeling.
Abstract: Logic programming is investigated as a vehicle for structuring and implementing decision support systems, with particular attention paid to those dealing with financial modeling. This approach to model building, analyzing, and interfacing is compared to currently popular paradigms such as spreadsheet systems and financial modeling languages. The logic programming approach is shown to subsume these in expressive power and permit the incorporation of important capabilities not currently available. Examples operationalizing some of the concepts using the logic programming language Prolog are given.

TL;DR: Investigation of the influence of cognitive style, a personality variable, on the component programming skill of debugging appeared to indicate that cognitive style measures represent one method for predicting success in this aspect of programming skill for student programmers.
Abstract: There is evidence that personality variables are related to overall programming ability for student programmers. This study investigated the influence of cognitive style, a personality variable, on the component programming skill of debugging. The Group Embedded Figures Test was used to determine students’ cognitive style. Instruments designed to test subjects’ diagnostic skills were developed and validated. Results supported an hypothesis that cognitive style was related to debugging skills, and appeared to indicate that cognitive style measures represent one method for predicting success in this aspect of programming skill for student programmers.

TL;DR: The antennal gland of the crayfish Pacifasticus leniusculus was studied using standard techniques for scanning electron microscopy as well as newer procedures for ultrasonic microdissection to clarify relationships in the nephron tubule.
Abstract: The antennal gland of the crayfish Pacifasticus leniusculus was studied using standard techniques for scanning electron microscopy as well as newer procedures for ultrasonic microdissection. To clarify relationships in the nephron tubule, transmission electron microscopy was employed. The coelomosac contains elongated cells (podocytes) displaying microvilli and extensive apical blebbing. A smooth basal lamina lines the blood space that furnishes hemolymph to the coelomosac. The labyrinth consists of tall columnar cells displaying apical microvilli, numerous blebs that seem to represent an expansion of apical plasma membrane, and lateral interdigitations. The nephron tubule consists of two distinctly different areas: a proximal region of flattened cells with extensive intercellular fusions, and a distal segment of separate, dome-shaped cells. Despite many similarities between the crayfish kidney and the vertebrate nephron, there are striking differences. The amount of surface blebbing that occurs in the coelomosac and labyrinth far exceeds that of the vertebrate nephron and may reflect its importance in the function of the crayfish kidney. The cells of the coelomosac are taller than are the vertebrate podocytes and possess less obvious arms and pedicels. In addition, the proximal segment of the nephron tubule is notable for its intercellular fusions, which are not present in the vertebrate nephron. Although the function of the intercellular fusions is unknown, they may play a role in cellular communication or the redistribution of fluids or electrolytes between cells.

TL;DR: This article found that the four commercial networks tended to frame their issue coverage in a confrontational style, presenting the image of a conflict about the issues by the candidates, but these stories often failed to identify the positions of the candidates or to give reasons why the candidates supported a particular position.
Abstract: A study of issue coverage in the evening newscasts of ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and PBS during the final two weeks of the 1984 Presidential campaign revealed that the four commercial networks tended to frame their issue coverage in a confrontational style, presenting the image of a conflict about the issues by the candidates. However, these stories often failed to identify the positions of the candidates or to give reasons why the candidates supported a particular position. PBS tended to frame its coverage in a confrontational format, but identified and explained candidate issue positions.

TL;DR: The authors found that high CA speakers required more preparation time than low CA speakers and that CA interacted with evaluation such that high CAs expecting to be evaluated took longer to prepare their speeches than those in the other conditions.
Abstract: This study tested whether speech preparation time was linked to communication apprehension (CA). Data reported herein indicate that high CA speakers required more preparation time than low CA speakers. Those expecting to be evaluated used more preparation time than those not expecting to be evaluated. CA interacted with evaluation such that high CAs expecting to be evaluated took longer to prepare their speeches than those in the other conditions. The implications of these results are discussed in the conclusion of this paper.

TL;DR: Hypertext's support of the human brain's hemispheric specialization, its isomorphism with generalized problem solving paradigms such as the state-space approach, and extensions of the basic model whereby nodes become executable decision models are revealed.
Abstract: A review of DSS (decision support systems) research and applications frameworks in the literature reveals several areas where further research may be valuable in identifying the usefulness and appropriate role of hypertext in DSS. These issues involve user characteristics, decision and problem characteristics, situational and organizational factors, and technological factors. Some areas which appear to be worthy of further investigation include hypertext's support of the human brain's hemispheric specialization, its isomorphism with generalized problem solving paradigms such as the state-space approach, and extensions of the basic model whereby nodes become executable decision models. In addition, hypertext may be self-applied by DSS researchers as a vehicle to simulate and study various user interface techniques and as a process tracing laboratory. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered the Sturm-Liouville problem in the case of finite, semi-infinite and infinite intervals, where the change in the discrete system in passing from one problem to the next is defined by a diagonal matrix.
Abstract: The computation of the eigenvalues of the Sturm-Liouville problem $$\begin{gathered} Lu\left( x \right) \equiv - u'' + \left( x \right) + q\left( x \right)u\left( x \right) = \lambda \rho \left( x \right)u\left( x \right), a < x < b \hfill \\ u\left( a \right) = u\left( b \right) = 0 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ (1.1) has been considered in ([1],[3]) in the case of finite, semi-infinite and infinite intervals. The function q is assumed non-negative and p is assumed positive. It is often the case that the interval (finite versus infinite) motivates the methodology. In [l] a sinc-collocation procedure Was developed that handled the numerical computation of the eigenvalues of (1.1) in the case of the finite interval and the semi-infinite interval wherein the change in the discrete system in passing from one problem to the next is defined by a diagonal matrix. Not considered in that paper was the implementation of the methodology for the infinite interval problem (1.1), i.e. a = -∞ and b = +∞. This is the purpose of the present paper.

TL;DR: The authors used the Black-Scholes option pricing model to establish a value for fixed rate loan commitments and derive the hedge ratio for the lending institution to hedge the interest rate risk associated with the commitments in the FHLMC forward market for mortgages.
Abstract: A fixed rate loan commitment that is binding on the lender but not on the loan applicant is equivalent to a put option. This article uses the Black-Scholes option pricing model to establish a value for fixed rate loan commitments and to derive the hedge ratio for the lending institution to hedge the interest rate risk associated with the commitments in the FHLMC forward market for mortgages. The effectiveness of the resulting hedge is tested in a simulation, where it is found that the result is a 71% reduction in the variance of the value of the lender's gain or loss associated with the commitment period.

TL;DR: Conclusions were that the foveal information was subject to early selection and that therefore it was not processed automatically andEffects on gap detection accuracy of information at fixation concerning a parafoveally presented target form's global shape were determined.
Abstract: Effects on gap detection accuracy of information at fixation concerning a parafoveally presented target form's global shape were determined in three experiments. Shape information was not directly relevant to the correct response regarding the presence of the gap. Tests were conducted to determine whether costs and benefits were associated with shape information, whether the effectiveness of shape information was sensitive to spatial attention, and whether subjects could volitionally suppress the nontarget information if it became apparent from preattentive analysis that it would not be helpful. Results were positive in all instances. Conclusions were that the foveal information was subject to early selection and that therefore it was not processed automatically.

TL;DR: A simple and elegant representation of elements of the affine coordinate ring of an algebraic curve is described and efficient, easy to implement algorithms to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and polynomial evaluation are described.
Abstract: Traditional methods of representing rational functions on curves are unwieldy and unsuitable for solution of many problems This paper describes a simple and elegant representation of elements of the affine coordinate ring of an algebraic curve and describes efficient, easy to implement algorithms to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and polynomial evaluation This data structure overcomes many of the disadvantages of more unwieldy traditional representations Elements are represented as vectors of elements of the ground field in a manner similar to the representation of polynomials of one variable as an array of coefficients This data structure is a fundamental ingredient in the author's decoding method for algebraic geometry codes The rational function approximation techniques used for decoding could not have been described with multivariate polynomials or truncated infinite series

TL;DR: Support was obtained for the assumption that certain interpersonal deficiencies may combine with beliefs in social benefits via alcohol usage to produce gregarious alcoholism.
Abstract: Path analysis procedures were used to test a causal model that concerns possible antecedent conditions in relation to gregarious drinking patterns. Selected scales from The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and The Alcohol Use Inventory (AUI) constituted the assessments. The model was partially corroborated with reference to a group of 40 alcoholics (32 males; 8 females; M age = 33) in an outpatient treatment setting. The presumed causal variables accounted for 26% of the variance in self-reported gregarious drinking. Support was obtained for the assumption that certain interpersonal deficiencies may combine with beliefs in social benefits via alcohol usage to produce gregarious alcoholism. Language: en
