Abstract: The growing complexity and global nature of wildlife poaching threaten the survival of many species worldwide and are outpacing conservation efforts. Here, we reviewed proximal and distal factors, both social and ecological, driving illegal killing or poaching of large carnivores at sites where it can potentially occur. Through this review, we developed a conceptual social–ecological system framework that ties together many of the factors influencing large carnivore poaching. Unlike most conservation action models, an important attribute of our framework is the integration of multiple factors related to both human motivations and animal vulnerability into feedbacks. We apply our framework to two case studies, tigers in Laos and wolverines in northern Sweden, to demonstrate its utility in disentangling some of the complex features of carnivore poaching that may have hindered effective responses to the current poaching crisis. Our framework offers a common platform to help guide future research on wildlife poaching feedbacks, which has hitherto been lacking, in order to effectively inform policy making and enforcement.

Abstract: Key innovations may increase the number of taxa in a clade that possesses the proposed innovation in comparison to its sister group that lacks the trait through either increased speciation or reduced extinction rates. Comparing sister clades across several independent lineages provides statistical support that the trait has increased species diversity. Previous studies have indicated that there may not be a relationship between biotic dispersal and higher species diversity, but only a few of these studies specified habit, habitat, or type of disperser. No previous study has specified all of the above parameters and used a phylogenetic approach. This article examines species diversity in numerous lineages of tropical understory plants with small, fleshy, bird-dispersed fruits for which a reliable estimate of phylogenetic relationships is available. Clades with fleshy fruits are significantly more diverse than sister clades with dry fruits.

Abstract: Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and M06-2X hybrid density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the interaction of various nonaqueous organic electrolytes with Na+ ion in rechargeable Na-ion batteries. We evaluate trends in solvation behavior of seven common electrolytes namely pure carbonate solvents (ethylene carbonate (EC), vinylene carbonate (VC), propylene carbonate (PC), butylene carbonate (BC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), and diethyl carbonate (DEC)) and four binary mixtures of carbonates (EC:PC, EC:DMC, EC:EMC, and EC:DEC). Thermochemistry calculations for the interaction of pure and binary mixtures of carbonate solvents with Na+ ion, Na+ ion coordinated with carbonate clusters obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, show that the formation of Na-carbonate complexes is exothermic and proceeds favorably.
