Abstract: The Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) is a prospective cohort study using participants from several ongoing cardiovascular and respiratory disease research projects to investigate the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease. This study design required unusual and different recruiting techniques to meet the study’s enrollment goal of between 6000 and 6600 participants. Individuals were recruited to undergo an overnight home polysomnogram, completion of several questionnaires, and collection of a small amount of physical examination data. This article describes the methods used to recruit these participants and how these procedures influenced the final participation rate and the representativeness of SHHS to its parent cohorts. Of 30,773 people eligible for recruitment into SHHS, attempts were made to enroll 11,145 (36%). Of those contacted, 6441 ultimately agreed to participate (58%). Recruitment rates (38 to 91%) varied among sites. SHHS participants were slightly younger (63.0 vs. 65.0 years, p < 0.001), had more years of education (14.1 vs. 13.7, p < 0.001), more likely to snore (34% vs. 23%, p < 0.001), had higher Epworth sleepiness scores (7.7 vs. 6.5, p < 0.001), slightly higher higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures (127.6/73.9 vs. 127.2/72.1, p < 0.001 for diastolic only), and a slightly higher body mass index (BMI) (28.5 vs. 27.5, p < 0.001). We conclude that it is feasible to recruit existing participants from one large-scale epidemiologic study into another with a high degree of success. However, the characteristics of the new cohort may vary in several respects from their original cohorts and therefore interpretation of study results will have to consider these differences.

Abstract: Bromus tectorum, a devastating plant invader in western North America, had entered Pennsylvania by 1790. Although rare, or extirpated, in the east until the 1850s, it was collected with increasing frequency after 1859 from Vermont to Virginia. Using enzyme electrophoresis, we analyzed 38 populations of this grass in the eastern U.S. to determine their genetic variation and structure as well as assess their relatedness to populations in the west. Genetic variation among eastern U.S. populations is low: mean number of alleles per locus (A), percent polymorphic loci per population (%P), and expected heterozygosity (H(exp)) are 1.01, 1.05%, and 0.002, respectively. No heterozygotes were detected. The eastern populations are genetically similar: mean genetic identity for all populations was 0.990 with values among population pairs ranged from 0.913 to 1.000. Thirteen populations in eastern and western North America shared Pgm-1a and Pgm-2a, while eight populations shared Mdh-2b and Mdh-3b. Other alleles detected in western North America (Got-4c, Got-4d, and Pgi-2b) were not, however, found in eastern U.S. populations. The invasion of North America by B. tectorum occurred through multiple introductions on both coasts; results from historical and genetic evidence suggest that eastern populations stem from a minimum of two introductions. The 19th century westward spread of B. tectorum from the East appears to be plausible.

Abstract: Theoretical and experimental results are presented for op-amp compensation using split-length transistors. By using split-length devices the right-half plane zero which plagues op-amp performance can be eliminated. Experimental results indicate substantial enhancements in speed while reducing power consumption and layout area. Further, these techniques can be used to compensate op-amps when using small supply voltage (VDD).

Abstract: Most online courses rely solely on asynchronous text-based online communication. This type of communication can foster anytime, anywhere reflection, critical thinking, and deep learning. However, it can also frustrate participants because of the lack of spontaneity and visual cues and the time it takes for conversations to develop and feedback to be shared, as well as the self-directedness and discipline it requires of participants to regularly check in and monitor discussions over time. Synchronous forms of communication can address some of these constraints. However, online educators often avoid using synchronous forms of communication in their courses, because of its own constraints. In this paper, we describe how we integrated live synchronous web meetings into asynchronous online courses, collected student feedback, and made iterative changes and refinements based on student feedback over time. We conclude with implications for practice.
