A guide to using the collinearity diagnostics

Abstract: The description of the collinearity diagnostics as presented in Belsley, Kuh, and Welsch's, Regression Diagnostics: Identifying Influential Data and Sources of Collinearity, is principally formal, leaving it to the user to implement the diagnostics and learn to digest and interpret the diagnostic results. This paper is designed to overcome this shortcoming by describing the different graphical displays that can be used to present the diagnostic information and, more importantly, by providing the detailed guidance needed to promote the beginning user into an experienced diagnostician and to aid those who wish to incorporate or automate the collinearity diagnostics into a guided-computer environment.

Being emotional during decision making—good or bad? an empirical investigation

Abstract: This paper examines the link between affective experience and decision-making performance. In a stock investment simulation, 101 stock investors rated their feelings on an Internet Web site while making investment decisions each day for 20 consecutive business days. Contrary to the popular belief that feelings are generally bad for decision making, we found that individuals who experienced more intense feelings achieved higher decision-making performance. Moreover, individuals who were better able to identify and distinguish among their current feelings achieved higher decision-making performance via their enhanced ability to control the possible biases induced by those feelings.

Electromagnetism supercharged!: learning physics with digital simulation games

Abstract: Learning scientists are increasingly turning to computer and video games as tools for learning. Simulation might not only motivate learners, but provide accessible ways for students to develop intuitive understandings of abstract physics phenomena. This study examines what learning occurs when an electromagnetism simulation game is used in a school for underserved students. Students in the experimental group performed better than students in the control group (guided discovery-based science) on measures for understanding. Game mechanics enabled students to confront weaknesses in understandings, and physics representations became tools for understanding problems. Implications for the design of educational digital media are discussed. Yet, it was also these very same game mechanics posed significant challenges in terms of student engagement, motivation, and learning of physics concepts.

Time for Revisionism on Rent Control

Abstract: Economists' traditional hostility to rent contols is based on models that treat the housing market as perfectly competitive and on the experience with 'hard' controls in New York City and many European countries following World War II. The current 'soft' rent control systems in North America are varied and qualitatively different from earlier hard controls. The theoretical case against them is weak, particularly when the housing market is viewed as imperfectly competitive. The empirical case against them is weak, too. Economists should reconsider their blanket opposition to current rent control systems and evaluate them on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract: This paper provides a survey of the first examples of efficient catalytic enantioselective olefin metathesis reactions. Mo-catalyzed asymmetric ring-closing (ARCM) and ring-opening (AROM) reactions allow access to myriad optically enriched compounds that are otherwise difficult to access.
