TL;DR: Preliminary colorimetric microassays using synthesized chromogenic calixpyrroles embedded in partially hydrophilic polyurethane matrices allow for observation of analyte-specific changes in color when the anions are administered in the form of their aqueous solutions and in the presence of weakly competing anions.
Abstract: The synthesis, structure, and anion binding properties of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4]pyrroles (OMCPs) and their N-confused octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole isomers (NC-OMCPs) containing an inverted pyrrole ring connected via α‘- and β-positions are described. X-ray diffraction analyses proved the structures of two synthesized isomeric pairs of OMCPs and NC-OMCPs. The addition of anions to solutions of chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs resulted in different colors suggesting different anion-binding behaviors. The chromogenic NC-OMCPs showed significantly stronger anion-induced color changes compared to the corresponding chromogenic OMCP, and the absorption spectroscopy titrations indicated that chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs also possess different anion binding selectivity. Detailed NMR studies revealed that this rather unusual feature stems from a different anion-binding mode in OMCPs and NC-OMCPs, one where the β-pyrrole C−H of the inverted pyrrole moiety participates in the hydrogen-bonded anion−NC-OMCP comple...

TL;DR: It was concluded that both FS and sex may moderate the degree of “cerebral dominance” for language processing, and that failures to adequately assess these variables may underlie much of the inconsistency of findings in the area.

TL;DR: This paper explored the relationship between attachment to each parent, children's social self-efficacy, and the quality of peer relations (attachment to peers and perceptions of victimization) with 67 fifth and sixth graders (31 female) attending a rural elementary school.
Abstract: Relationships among attachment to each parent, children's social self-efficacy, and the quality of peer relations (attachment to peers and perceptions of victimization) were explored with 67 fifth and sixth graders (31 female) attending a rural elementary school. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed main effects for gender and attachment to mother relative to the attachment to peers variable, with girls and more securely attached children reporting higher quality attachment to peers. Main effects were also detected for gender and attachment to father relative to social self-efficacy, with girls and more securely attached children exhibiting higher self-efficacy. No main effects were observed relative to the peer victimization variable. None of the interaction effects involving gender and attachment to each parent relative to attachment to peers, peer victimization, and social self-efficacy were significant. Finally, evidence for mediation of attachment to father on attachment to peers by children's social self-efficacy was revealed. Implications of the results are discussed and ideas for future research are provided. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented an attempt at further developing the diversionary theory of force, using a simultaneous system of equations that treated presidential approval and force as endogenous variables, and showed that the model reveals a rally effect and that unemployment has a positive effect on force levels.
Abstract: This study represents an attempt at further developing the diversionary theory of force. The analysis covers the period 1949 to 1994 using a simultaneous system of equations that treat presidential approval and force as endogenous variables. After controlling for opportunities and Soviet/Russian crisis behavior, the model reveals a rally effect and that unemployment has a positive effect on force levels. I discuss how presidential decisions to divert are made in the context of poliheuristic decision processing.

TL;DR: Nursing home caregivers reported more stressors due to ADL (activities of daily living) assistance, their relatives' behavioral and cognitive functioning, and lack of caregiving support from family and friends.
Abstract: We examined differences in stressors and well-being for caregivers who care for a relative with dementia at home and those who had placed their relative in a nursing home. The groups did not differ in depression or somatic complaints, but nursing home caregivers had fewer social and interpersonal disruptions. Controlling for caregiving problems, nursing home caregivers reported more stressors due to ADL (activities of daily living) assistance, their relatives' behavioral and cognitive functioning, and lack of caregiving support from family and friends.
