Abstract: This article reports the results of an experimental investigation of the influence of a communicator’s characteristics on respondent’s evaluation of an advertisement when the communicator is in the role of a spokesperson. Specifically, the author assesses the impact of the physical attractiveness, sex and race of a spokesperson, the sex of the respondent and product advertised on respondent’s attitude toward the advertisement, and respondent’s perceptions of the advertised product. The results presented indicate that the effectiveness of the factors mentioned are dependent on the specific objective of the communication. A main effect of physical attractiveness was noted on a subject’s attitude toward the advertisement, on perceptions of product quality and intent to purchase. The sex of the communicator impacted on a subject's perception of product quality and interacted with the race of the communicator to effect the intent to purchase variable. Race was shown to effect the subject’s perception of product quality. A main effect of the sex of the subject was noted for the cognition variable.

Abstract: We report on organometallic synthesis of luminescent (ZnSe/CdS)/CdS semiconductor heterostructured nanorods (hetero-NRs) that produce an efficient spatial separation of carriers along the main axis of the structure (type II carrier localization). Nanorods were fabricated using a seeded-type approach by nucleating the growth of 20−100 nm CdS extensions at [000 ± 1] facets of wurtzite ZnSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals. The difference in growth rates of CdS in each of the two directions ensures that the position of ZnSe/CdS seeds in the final structure is offset from the center of hetero-NRs, resulting in a spatially asymmetric distribution of carrier wave functions along the heterostructure. Present work demonstrates a number of unique properties of (ZnSe/CdS)/CdS hetero-NRs, including enhanced magnitude of quantum confined Stark effect and subnanosecond switching of absorption energies that can find practical applications in electroabsorption switches and ultrasensitive charge detectors.

Abstract: When young animals are separated from their normal social environment in groups they distress vocalize (DV) less than when isolated alone. Opioid blockade with naloxone (1 mg/kg peripherally, and 1 μg centrally) increased crying more in group tested chicks than individually tested ones. The serotonin receptor blocking agent methysergide and the cholinergic blocking agent atropine sulfate produced similar effects. The testing of birds in mirrored environments also produced a reduction of DV's, and all three receptor blocking agents augmented DV's more in mirrored environments than in mirrorless ones. However, in studies evaluating changes in this comfort response by facilitation of opiate, serotonin (5 HT), and acetylcholine (ACh) activity (with morphine, quipazine and pilocarpine, respectively), only morphine was found to magnify the comforting effect of mirrors. The effects of naloxone on contact comfort, and the acquisition and expression of imprinting were further evaluated, and opioid blockade reduced all these measures of social comfort. It is concluded, that endogenous opioid activity (and to a lesser extent, 5 HT and ACh) contribute to the comfort which animals derive from their social environment.
