TL;DR: Two algorithms are presented for implementing any of a class of buddy systems for dynamic storage allocation which corresponds to a set of recurrence relations which relate the block sizes provided to each other.
Abstract: Two algorithms are presented for implementing any of a class of buddy systems for dynamic storage allocation. Each buddy system corresponds to a set of recurrence relations which relate the block sizes provided to each other. Analyses of the internal fragmentation of the binary buddy system, the Fibonacci buddy system, and the weighted buddy system are given. Comparative simulation results are also presented for internal, external, and total fragmentation.

Abstract: Growing concern with the effect of negative public attitudes toward the police on police-community polarization and morale and effectiveness has led to numerous efforts to improve the image of the policeman and to facilitate more positive relationships with the community. It is proposed that the eflectiveness of such programs is hindered by their failure to consider that public attitudes toward the police do not exist in isolation, but are a part of a broader complex of attitudes toward the system of legal justice and its various representatives. Data from four different samples of residents of a western state provide some tentative support for this hypothesis. Implications of the data for programs designed to improve police-community relationships are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that aggregate production functions with parameters estimated from factor payments do appear to give good results, at least sometimes, and to do so in an apparently non-trivial way.
Abstract: As a purely theoretical matter, aggregate production functions exist only under conditions too stringent to be believed satisfied by the diverse technological relationships of actual economies. There is a summary discussion and bibliography in Fisher [2]. Yet aggregate production functions estimated from real data do appear to give good results, at least sometimes, and to do so in an apparently non-trivial way. Not only do such estimated relationships give good fits to input and output data, but also the calculated marginal products appear to be related to observed factor payments. Alternatively, production functions with parameters estimated from factor payments turn out to fit input and output data pretty well sometimes. It is not a simple matter to decide why this should be so as a matter of theory. Indeed, the problem is sufficiently complicated that perhaps the most promising mode of attack on it is through the construction and analysis of simulation experiments. By constructing simplified economies in which the conditions for aggregation are known not to be satisfied, we can hope to find out inductively the circumstances under which aggregate production functions appear to give good results in the double sense just discussed. Moreover, such experiments can cast light on other aspects of the estimation of aggregate production functions from underlying non-aggregatable data. The related papers of Houthakker [4], Levhari [6] and Sato [8] do not bear directly on the problems here addressed. Those papers show what aggregate production functions can be expected when the distribution of capital over firms with related technologies is fixed (or changes in very restricted ways). Such fixity of distribution, however, can hardly be expected in the real world and is certainly not true in the world of simulation experiments reported below and in Fisher [3]. Here the issue is that of why aggregate production functions should appear to exist at all, rather than that of what form they will take given that a constant distribution of capital over firms ensures their existence. See Fisher [2, pp. 571-574]. The books by Johansen [5] and Sato [9] give excellent discussions of aggregation from several points of view. This programme of research was begun in Fisher [3]; individual firms (with a single homogeneous output and single homogeneous labour but different capital types) were given different Cobb-Douglas production functions, underlying capital and labour data were generated in various ways, and labour was assigned to firms to maximize output. An aggregate Cobb-Douglas production function was then estimated and its wage predictions examined. A number of subsidiary results were found in these experiments, and we shall comment

TL;DR: The diborides are isomorphous, with an AlB2-type (C32) structure as mentioned in this paper, and each of them assumes a UB12-type(D2f) structure.
Abstract: Borides with a composition LnB2 and LnB12 have been reported [1,2] for the smaller members of the lanthanide series. Diborides have been prepared [3–10] for Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y, Sc and dodecaborides are known [5,6,11–16] for Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y, Sc. The diborides are isomorphous, with an AlB2-type (C32) structure. This structure is hexagonal (P6/mmm) and consists of alternating layers of metal atoms and boron atoms. The metal atoms form close-packed (36) layers and the boron atoms, hexagonal (63) layers. The layers are arranged such that boron atoms are positioned over the faces of the triangles formed by the metal atoms. The dodecaborides (except SCB12) each assume a UB12-type(D2f) structure. This structure is cubic (Fm3m) with metal atoms at fcc positions and each metal atom surrounded by a B24 cubo-octahedron. The tetragonal structure of ScB12 is described by Matkovich, et al. [16].

Abstract: This paper presents a critical review of research which has been offered in support of training programs that focus on Human Relations Development as proposed by Robert Carkhuff. The studies relied upon by Carkhuff and his students have failed to specify the nature of treatment; its components seem to vary from one study to the next; control groups of a comparative type are usually missing and, when present, have not been equivalent in expectation, motivation, contact time, leader skill or enthusiasm. Measures of process have not been collected and associated with helpee benefit. The scales used to measure gains in interpersonal skills do not have published validity data to support them. Subjects actually practice on the criterion measures employed at posttesting. The gains made have not been demonstrated to be broadly generalized or of practical significance and therefore seem to be of rather limited value. Overall, it was found that research in this area is years behind that which has come to be expecte...

Abstract: A theory with supporting experimental evidence is presented for reconstructing the three-dimensional fluid velocity vector field in a moving medium from a set of measurements of the acoustic propagation time between a multiplicity of transmitter and receiver locations on a stationary boundary surface. The inversion of the integrals’relating the acoustic propagation path to the propagation time measurements is affected by linearization and discrete approximation of the integrals and application of an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART). The problem of the presence of certain invisible fluid flow functions is treated. Since this technique does not require the presence of scattering centers or the optical transparency of the medium, it may be applied in many cases (i.e., turbid, opaque, or chemically pure media) where Doppler or optical (e.g., laser holography) methods fail.

TL;DR: Body weight and lipid index were significantly positively correlated being highest in January and lowest in September, and total lipid content was significantly inversely correlated with air temperature; the high autumn and spring pre-migratory lipid peaks of migratory species were only weakly expressed in the redpolls.
Abstract: Total lipids were extracted from 161 redpolls (Acanthis spp.) collected each month of the year from October 1962 to September 1963, in interior Alaska. A lipid index (Weight of ether extract x100/live body weight) was calculated for each sample. Lipids were also extracted from sections of pectoral muscle, livers and hearts representing each month. Body weight and lipid index were significantly positively correlated being highest in January and lowest in September. Total lipid content was significantly inversely correlated with air temperature; the high autumn and spring pre-migratory lipid peaks of migratory species were only weakly expressed in the redpolls. Liver lipid showed a significant annual variation being highest in December and lowest in August, while lipid from heart and pectoral muscle did not vary seasonally. Five birds were held in captivity during spring and summer at a constant temperature of 22°C. Food consumption was 5.1 g/day or 22.4 kcal. The caloric value of the most extensively utilized natural food, birch seed (Betula papyrifera), was determined (5.4–5.5 kcal/g dry wt). When esophageal diverticulae are full (2.0 g wet wt) of birch seeds, the resulting energy yield may sustain an individual for only a fraction of a 24 h winter day in contrast to other arctic herbivores (e.g. ptarmigan, Lagopus sp.) in which a full crop may suffice for the full 24 h period.

TL;DR: Results indicated that parallel dyads adjusted to both the complementary and symmetrical conditions, whereas symmetrical and complementary dyads did not successfully accomodate rules outside their own class.
Abstract: It was postulated that the parallel interaction class is a higher logical order than complementary and symmetrical interaction, which appear to be of the same logical type. Father-mother, father-child, and mother-child dyads of 48 families were categorized into complementary, symmetrical, and parallel classes using the Relationship Styles Inventory. Each of the dyads in these three categories was then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions in which they jointly resolved a moral dilemma. In one condition, the dyads were asked to follow complementary rules, while in the second condition they were instructed to follow symmetrical rules. Results indicated that parallel dyads adjusted to both the complementary and symmetrical conditions, whereas symmetrical and complementary dyads did not successfully accomodate rules outside their own class. The implications in terms of therapeutic intervention and further research are discussed.

TL;DR: The Allred Interaction Analysis for Counselors (AICA) as mentioned in this paper is an instrument for systematically analyzing counselors' and clients' verbal behaviors, which was designed to provide marriage and family counselors in-training a method for acquiring meaningful, objective feedback on their counseling behaviors.
Abstract: The Allred Interaction Analysis for Counselors is an instrument for systematically analyzing counselors' and clients' verbal behaviors. It was constructed to provide marriage and family counselors-in-training a method for acquiring meaningful, objective feedback on their counseling behaviors. The interrater reliability coefficients have been high. Results of validity studies have been encouraging. Though the instrument was initially designed from analysis of structured family counseling, research indicates it may have rather wide application for many different counseling approaches and settings.

TL;DR: Concept elaboration theory has been suggested as a more adequate design tool for structuring, sequencing and determining presentation strategies for such complex subject matter.
Abstract: This presentation has been necessarily brief. Adequate instruction in the use of elaboration theory as in preparing a learning hierarchy requires considerable practice and can hardly be adequately taught in a short paper. Nevertheless, we have suggested that as used in instructional development for sequencing subject matter content learning hierarchies are a useful step in analysis of component skills but may not provide sufficient synthesis for sequencing instruction in complex interrelated procedures and principles. Concept elaboration theory has been suggested as a more adequate design tool for structuring, sequencing and determining presentation strategies for such complex subject matter. The premise of elaboration theory is that the underlying principle should be taught first accompanied by the simplest complete procedure. This initial presentation of theepitome should then be elaborated with an alternating sequence of segregated and integrated presentations which enable the student to learn the component concepts and to put them together in integrated practice. Each cycle of elaboration introduces more complexity until the student has acquired the terminal procedure.

Abstract: Five factors affecting the academic performance of Indian students are identified: self-concept, achievement motivation, anti-Indian discrimination, culture conflict, and family instability. Their impact on academic performance is assessed among Indian high school students in Seattle, Washington. Findings suggest that achievement motivation and culture conflict are the most important correlates of academic achievement among urban Indian students, and it is recommended that these serve as target variables in programs designed to improve academic performance.
