TL;DR: The Sound Shape of Language as mentioned in this paper is a collection of essays written by Roman Jakobson, who developed his vision of language through impassioned exposition, deft and devastating allusions to critical literature, anecdotes with the force of parables, metaphors of mythic imagery and above all else overriding verbal artistry.
Abstract: "Reading this volume transported me back to Harvard and MIT lecture halls of the 1960s, where weekly Roman Jakobson would spellbind his audience (this reviewer included), developing his vision of language through impassioned exposition, deft and devastating allusions to critical literature, anecdotes with the force of parables, metaphors of mythic imagery, and above all else overriding verbal artistry: truly in his own phrase, 'In the poetry of grammar'. The Sound Shape of Language, his collaboration with Linda R. Waugh, a scholar who has devoted considerable attention to an exposition and elaboration of Jakobsonian views, fortunately has preserved in print the authoritative lectorial voice." TL;DR: Data from 44 plant communities of the arid zone of western North America and from the entire California flora suggest that the dioecious habit is best developed among wind pollinated woody plants.
Abstract: Data from 44 plant communities of the arid zone of western North America and from the entire California flora suggest that the dioecious habit (separate sexed individuals) is best developed among wind pollinated woody plants. A rationale is presented for the ways in which wind pollination and large plant size have favored the development of the dioecious habit. Based upon the patterns examined, it is concluded that inbreeding depression alone is insufficient to account for the evolution of the dioecious habit in many temperate species.

TL;DR: In this article, the Gini, Theil entropy, and Pietra measures of inequality associated with the gamma distribution function are expressed in terms of the parameters defining the Gamma distribution, along with expressions for the asymptotic standard errors of the MLE measures.
Abstract: The Gini, Theil entropy, and Pietra measures of inequality associated with the gamma distribution function are expressed in terms of the parameters defining the gamma distribution. Method of moments (MME) and maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) of these measures are obtained along with expressions for the asymptotic standard errors of the MLE measures. A table is presented that facilitates the calculation of MLE of inequality measures and the associated asymptotic standard errors by expressing each as a function of the ratio of the arithmetic mean and geometric mean. This table also facilitates the calculation of MME estimates of inequality measures. The results of a Monte Carlo study are used to compare the performance of the MME and MLE for data generated from a population characterized by a gamma distribution and to consider questions of statistical inference and requisite sample size.

TL;DR: The effect of thermal effluent on attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977 Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977 Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river Community structure was unique from all other adjacent areas Small temperature increases which occured as effluent and river waters mixed farther downstream were apparently not as important to the algal flora as other environmental factors

TL;DR: This chapter deals specifically with the thermodynamic and kinetic quantities associated with the interactions of cations with these ligands in solution and the macrocyclic effect, which has aroused particular interest and will be analyzed in detail.
Abstract: The intense interest recently generated in the so-called macrocyclic ligands finds roots in the extraordinary stability of their cation complexes and their peculiar ability to selectively bind certain cations in preference to others. This chapter deals specifically with the thermodynamic and kinetic quantities associated with the interactions of cations with these ligands in solution. The thermodynamics of these reactions has received considerably more attention than has their kinetics and, consequently, the bulk of the chapter will deal with the former. Of particular interest are those factors that are responsible for and that influence the remarkable binding strength and selectivity of the wide variety of ligands studied thus far. In this chapter we will summarize work concerning these factors which has been published through 1976. One of these factors, the macrocyclic effect, has aroused particular interest and will be analyzed in detail.

TL;DR: Analysis of the vascular floras of Utah, Colorado, and California suggests that a syndrome of life form and reproductive characteristics separates rare and common species, and that most rare taxa are equipped for rapid exploitation of small, unusual habitats.
Abstract: Analysis of the vascular floras of Utah, Colorado, and California suggest that a syndrome of life form and reproductive characteristics separates rare and common species. Woody plants are heavily underrepresented, and herbs are overrepresented on the official lists of endangered and/or threatened plants of the floras considered. Few of the rare species are descended from wind-pollinated ancestors, but instead are derived from the insect-pollinated stock. Theory suggests that many of the rare taxa will ultimately be shown to be self-pollinated. The date show a tendency for rare species to be better represented among taxa having bilaterrally symmetrical as opposed to radially symmetrical flowers. in aggregate, the results suggest that most rare taxa are equipped for rapid exploitation of small, unusual habitats, Because many rare taxa appear to be dependent on insects for reproduction, their survival depends not only on appropriate physical habitat but also on healthy pollinator populations. Reproduction of outcrossed taxa will be handicapped by road dust and other sources of atmospheric particulate which might foul stigmatic surfaces. Self-pollinated taxa may have little generic variability and thus be especially sensitive to environmental modifications. Because most rare taxa have little generic variability and thus be especially sensitive to environmental modifications. Because most rare taxa are dicotyledonous herbs, herbicides such as 2, 4-D which have been widely used in vegetation management for control of broadleafed plants can be expected to have highly deleterious effects on populations of rare species in the target area.

TL;DR: It was found that the refinery, rather than the smelter, had the highest percent of employees submitting claims, and this pattern was found to hold for respiratory disease classifications as well as overall morbidity levels.
Abstract: Smelter workers were compared with employees at the mine, concentrator and refinery in an attempt to discover if the smelter environment has an effect on morbidity. The data for the study consisted of weekly indemnity insurance claim forms. It was found that the refinery, rather than the smelter, had the highest percent of employees submitting claims. Other major comparisons of morbidity among the four plants also showed the refinery to be highest, with the smelter closer to the mine and concentrator. This pattern was found to hold for respiratory disease classifications as well as overall morbidity levels.

Abstract: Surface deactivation in the preparation of glass capillary columns was studied using different acid leaching procedures. Surface analysis by Auger electron spectroscopy both before and after heat treatment of these capillaries provided information on the extent of leaching associated 1 Present address, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37830 with each procedure. Results suggest that Pyrex glass which has been leached with 19% HC1 solution at 100°C is essentially pure SiO2 except for a significant amount of surface carbon contamination. Furthermore, heat treatment of soda-lime glass with gaseous HC1 followed by formic acid leaching achieves nearly complete deactivation. Chromatographic results verify these observations.

TL;DR: The effects of flow regulation on stream communities immediately below reservoirs have been reported by several authors (Radford and Hartland-Rowe, 1971; Trotsky and Gregory, 1974; Ward, 1976a; Gore, 1977) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The effects of flow regulation on stream communities immediately below reservoirs have been reported by several authors (Radford and Hartland-Rowe, 1971; Trotsky and Gregory, 1974; Ward, 1976a; Gore, 1977). Ward (1976a) reviewed the effects of reduced flow below dams on the physical and biological characteristics of streams. Attempts to provide criteria for recommending adequate stream flows have resulted in several survey methods using physical stream parameters, such as width, depth and velocity, pool-to-riffle ratio, and wetted perimeter (Stalnaker and Arnett, 1976). Recommended flows have also been based on a percentage of the historical stream flow (Tennant, 1975) or “adequate” water coverage for aquatic insect production and fish spawning (Hooper, 1973; Gore, 1978). Recommended minimum flows do not, however, take into account the long-term implications of altering the natural flow regime of a lotic system.

Abstract: Modern computer configurations are often designed to share a host of resources among many users who may be simultaneously competing for their utilization A substantive issue m computer management focuses on how to effechvely allocate computing resources and subsequently charge for them m this competing environment. The issue is generally made more complex by the dependencms in resource availability stemmmg from the hardware configuration. This paper surveys significant charging mechanisms which have been proposed. The paper does not discuss specffic commercial software available to implement charging approaches, but rather is written as a basra survey for readers wath an mterest an both computers and management science. An elementary understanding of probability and statistics will be helpful to the reader of this paper and essential to one who pursues the bibhography

Abstract: The problem of estimating population parameters based upon grouped data is considered and several alternative estimation schemes such as the method of scoring, least lines, least squares, minimum chi square, and a method of approximating method of moments and maximum likelihood estimators are considered. These estimators are compared with maximum likelihood and method of moments estimators based upon individual observations using a Monte Carlo study where the parent population is characterized by a gamma distribution. An application of these techniques to fitting a gamma distribution to 1970-74 census income data is considered.

Abstract: Much of the variation in hexaploid Atriplex tridletntuita appears to have come from tetraploid A. caniescens by introgression. Among the recombinations, three types appear to have become established as new, adaptive, hexaploid derivatives. One of these is a robust, woody form near Knolls, Utah, another is a widespread, low-growing, shrubby form in Lander County, Nevada, the other is an upright bushy, canescenis-like form near Grantsville, Utah.
