Abstract: Muscle tremors mimicking atrial or ventricular arrhythmias are unusual. If present, however, misdiagnosis and consequently inappropriate treatments are possible. The authors present a patient with Parkinson's disease who was referred for evaluation of the need for oral anticoagulation because of persistent atrial flutter.

Longitudinal Analysis of Female Authorship of Psychiatry Articles in Turkey.

Abstract: Introduction The number of women with careers in medicine and with academic positions at medical schools has increased substantially since the 1980s; however, women remain underrepresented in medical academia, which may be because of the fewer research publications authored by women. This study aimed to determine the gender distribution among Turkish authors of psychiatry articles published in international scientific journals during a 30-year period. Methods The ISI Web of Science database was searched for all psychiatry publications between 1980 and 2009 using the search term Turkey. All articles were classified according to publication period (1980-1989, 1990-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2009), gender of the first and last authors, first author title, total number of authors, and type of article. Results In all, 1961 articles meet the study criteria. The first author of 36.5% of the articles and 34.9% of last authors were women. The percentage of female first and last authors did not differ according to publication period (p=0.57). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge this is the first study to examine gender and authorship of psychiatric research in Turkey. In total, 33% of academic positions in Turkish university psychiatry departments were occupied by women, which is comparable to the percentage of female first authors of psychiatric research papers from Turkey. It could be concluded that women academics in psychiatry departments from state universities are as reproductive as their male counterparts, but there is still a "gender gap" in psychiatry field in our country.

Impact of histamine H4 receptor deficiency on the modulation of T cells in a murine breast cancer model

Abstract: The histamine H4 receptor (H4R) is preferentially expressed in immune cells and is a potential therapeutic target for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. This study aimed at further exploring the role of H4R in the immunobiology of breast cancer. We used wild type (WT) and H4R deficient mice (KO) to evaluate whether H4R genotypes show a different distribution of T cell subsets in spleens, tumours and tumour draining lymph nodes (TDLN) in a syngeneic ErbB2-positive breast cancer model developed orthotopically with LM3 cells and its impact on tumour growth. The presence of tumours had a differential impact on the distribution of T cells in TDLN from KO mice compared to WT ones. At day 21 post-inoculation (p.i.) of cells, despite no significant changes in the tumour weight, TDLN from KO mice showed a significantly increased proportion of CD8+ T cells compared to WT mice. At day 38 p.i. of cells a reduced tumour weight was evident in KO mice. This was accompanied by a decreased proportion of CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells in TDLN of KO compared to WT mice. Tumour-bearing KO mice showed a better survival compared to WT mice. H4R-mediated mechanisms may modulate the immune tumour microenvironment, promoting an immunosuppressive milieu. Results suggest that H4R could be explored as an immunotherapeutic target with potential benefit in combination with immunotherapy. Further preclinical and clinical studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis.

Capsular pseudoinvasion after fine-needle aspiration of follicular adenomas of the thyroid

Abstract: Two cases of an unusual finding of capsular pseudoinvasion in follicular thyroid adenomas after fine-needle aspiration (FNA) procedures are reported. These capsular breaches were noted along the hemorrhagic needle track, which traversed the normal peripheral thyroid parenchyma into the lesions. A reparative reaction was seen at some points along one of the tracks. Histologic examination also showed extrusion of the tumor parenchyma through the capsular interruption in one case. Surgical pathologists should be aware of this rare complication of FNA of thyroid follicular adenomas as a differential diagnosis of minimally invasive (encapsulated) follicular carcinoma.
