TL;DR: Two sets of experiments with normal subjects, using the same virtual reality setup, are presented, which are used to determine the gravitational vertical precision while the second is used to find dynamic models of each subject response.
Abstract: The estimation of the vertical in humans is important in everyday life although the mechanisms involved are not completely understood yet. This paper presents two sets of experiments with normal subjects, using the same virtual reality setup, aiming to help in this understanding. First, a steady state experiment is presented, which is used to determine the gravitational vertical precision while the second, a dynamical transient response experiment, is used to find dynamic models of each subject response. Results show that the dynamic models are able to reproduce the results of the steady state experiment while having the benefits that a dynamic model brings to evaluate subjects performance.

TL;DR: The low incidence of PNF and EM and the characteristics of the nonrecovered liver donors suggest that organ acceptance criteria should be less rigorous.
Abstract: Summary Organ shortage is the major limitation for the growth of deceased donor liver transplant worldwide One strategy to ameliorate this problem is to maximize the liver utilization rate To assess predictors of liver utilization in Argentina The national database was used to analyze transplant activity in 2010 Donor, recipient, and transplant variables were evaluated as predictors of graft utilization of number of rejected donor offers before grafting and with the occurrence of primary nonfunction (PNF) or early post-transplant mortality (EM) Of the 582 deceased donors, 293 (503%) were recovered for liver transplant Variables associated with the nonrecovery of the liver were age ≥46 years, umbilical perimeter ≥92 cm, organ procurement outside Gran Buenos Aires, AST ≥42 U/l and ALT ≥29 U/l The median number of rejected offers before grafting was 4, and in 71 patients (25%), there were ≥13 The only independent predictor for the occurrence of PNF (34%) or EM (52%) was the recipient’s emergency status During 2010 in Argentina, the liver was recovered in only half of donors The low incidence of PNF and EM and the characteristics of the nonrecovered liver donors suggest that organ acceptance criteria should be less rigorous

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess if the fracture and/or nonunion of extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO) affected the behavior and survival of modular fluted and tapered distal fixation stems.
Abstract: Introduction The objective of this study was to assess if the fracture and/or non-union of extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO) affected the behavior and survival of modular fluted and tapered distal fixation stems in revision total hip arthroplasties (rTHA) Methods We retrospectively analyzed 52 rTHA in 52 patients Preoperative diagnoses were mechanical loosening (42 cases), septic loosening (8), periprosthetic fracture (1), and femoral stem fracture (1) According to the Paprosky classification, femoral bone stock deficiencies were 19 type-II, 26 type IIIA, and 7 type IIIB We assessed the behavior of the osteotomy (union, fracture, migration) and the survival and behavior (integration and subsidence) of prosthetic femoral stems Results ETO union and non-union rates were 8461% (44 patients) and 1538% (8 cases) respectively There were twelve (23%) intra-operative fractures of the osteotomy fragment and 11 (2115%) migrations (45 mm on average) We observed bone union in 39 (75%) stems and 13 (25%) stable fibrous unions Nine (173%) stems subsided 7 mm (2–15 mm) on average before becoming stable Stem subsidence and integration was not significantly affected by ETO fracture/no fracture or union/non-union The postoperative Harris Hip Score (HHS) improved significantly as compared to the pre-operative HHS (3841 ± 354 vs 8529 ± 336; p Conclusions In this series, neither the non-union nor the intra-operative fracture of the ETO segment affected the behavior or medium-term survival of femoral stems
