Abstract: The use of artificial neural networks for parameter sensitivity analysis in civil engineering systems is an emerging research focus of increased interest. Existing methods are generally based on a single neural network, but are inadequate as a basis for parameter sensitivity analysis because of the instability of a single neural network. To address this deficiency, this study develops a neural network ensemble-based parameter sensitivity analysis paradigm. This paradigm features use of a set of preselected superior neural networks to make decisions about parameter sensitivity by synthesizing sensitivity analysis results of individual neural networks. The proposed paradigm is employed to address two classic civil engineering problems: (1) identification of critical parameters in the fracture failure of notched concrete beams and (2) recognition of the most significant parameters in the lateral deformation of deep foundation pits. The results show that tensile strength and modulus of elasticity are the critical parameters in the fracture failure of the notched concrete beam, and elasticity modulus of soil, Poisson’s ratio and soil cohesion are the most significant influential factors in the lateral deformation of the deep foundation pit. The proposed method provides a common paradigm for analysing the sensitivity of influential parameters, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms of civil engineering systems.

Abstract: Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a modern polymer material used in a wide variety of ways. Thanks to its excellent resistance to chemical or thermal degradation and low reactivity, it finds use in biology, chemistry, and electronics as well. By enriching the polymer with an easily accessible and cheap variant of graphite, it is possible to affect the ratio of crystalline phases. A correlation between the ratios of crystalline phases and different properties, like dielectric constant as well as piezo- and triboelectric properties, has been found, but the relationship between them is highly complex. These changes have been observed by a number of methods from structural, chemical and electrical points of view. Results of these methods have been documented to create a basis for further research and experimentation on the usability of this combined material in more complex structures and devices.

Abstract: This paper discusses teamwork, development of a team‐based organisation and performance measurement issues. This discussion leads to the formulation of a methodology to measure the organisational journey towards a team‐based organisational paradigm. The TEaM model, a model based on the EFQM excellence model, is suggested as a self‐assessment tool for the measurement of teamwork culture in organisations. Consequently, a five step‐approach aimed at successful acquisition of the proposed model is recommended. The authors demonstrate the usefulness of TEaM, not only in the improvement of teamwork culture in organisations, but also in reducing the resistance to change efforts while supporting the knowledge exchange through continuous self‐assessment of teams.

Abstract: : The corrosion of reinforcement is one of the major causes of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, considerably affecting their durability and reliability. The rate of reinforcement corrosion is governed by, among other factors, the presence of chlorides on the surface of the steel. The assessment of such deteriorating effects necessitates the development of relevant models and the utilization of advanced simulation techniques to enable the probabilistic analysis of concrete structures. In this article an approach for the assessment of the durability and reliability of RC structures under attack from chlorides is introduced. The field of chloride concentration at different locations in the structure (represented in 2D space by chosen longitudinal or cross sections) is modeled as a function of time by a cellular automata (CA) technique. The results of this simulation are then utilized for the assessment of a steel corrosion prognosis using a probabilistic 1D model at chosen points, although the rate of corrosion is based on experimental results. The concentrations of chlorides and pH levels are reflected in this way. The described approach is applied to an illustrative example showing the feasibility of capturing the effect of chloride concentration on the steel corrosion rate and consequently on the assessment of the service life and/or reliability of the structure.
